Was there a touch of divine intervention at Balenciaga on first day Rosh Hashanah?

Was I the only (Jewish) person on Planet Fashion who wondered whether there was a spot of divine intervention going on in Paris during Fashion Week when not one but three benches ? and front row benches at that ? collapsed during the Balenciaga show, which took place on the first day Rosh Hashanah.

I do, of course, sympathise with the fashion capitals ? London, Milan and New York as well as Paris ? whose organisers all try desperately to fit in all four spring/summer fashion weeks, which take place annually in September, without clashing with Rosh Hashanah or Yom Kippur. Some years it?s easier, when the High Holydays fall late, as the four fashion weeks can usually be crammed in. But often rows erupt between organisers and buyers and journalists when one or other city tries to schedule major shows on Rosh Hashanah or Yom Kippur.

Two years ago it was London that offended, scheduling shows on the Yom Kippur and provoking the wrath of some senior fashion editors and ensuring that many top US buyers would be absent.

This year, unusually, Paris offended, scheduling a handful of top shows on first day Rosh Hashanah. It was an odd move for a capital where there many people in key positions are Jewish, and where American buyers, many of whom are Jewish, are seen is vital to a fashion house?s success.

Perhaps next September, the Balenciaga bench debacle will prove a salutary reminder not to schedule shows over the High Holy days.

Prediction time is fraught with untold dangers

Terry Reilly

“DO me up a blog on three predictions for next year?” I'm told and greet the news with the same joy as a request from the wife to pick up a present for her mother before Christmas.

It's not that buying the present is a problem, it's the hassle that goes with it. The five minutes of thinking about it. The refusal by anyone around you to offer any help. But most of all the potential for disaster (a few years ago I picked up what I thought was an anti-ageing cream to get away from a bunch of panicked teenaged shoppers fighting for the last bottle of Beyonce perfume only for a case of embarrassment all round when my mother in law opened the shop assistant's wrapped tub of breast firming cream!).

This is a similar scenario. Get it right and no-one remembers, get it wrong and it will be brought up the next time you try to make a point on a sporting argument.

But just like the in laws' presents dilemmas, there are a few things most men have to accept in life: 1) you are usually wrong; 2) once the people around you know that everyone gets on a whole lot better; 3) use that as an excuse to buy another tin of breast firming cream for the wife next year and if she uses it excellent, if she doesn't revert to 1!

Tiger Woods will win the British Open
I was prepared to write 'never start small in the predictions business' until I checked the odds for the event and found out the bookmakers agree with this sentiment and have put the former world number one in as favourite at 7/1. He won't enjoy a big advantage at the Royal Lytham & St Annes Golf Club, as the course will be set up to punish wayward shooting. Therefore the big hitters will have to row back at this event.
But factor in Tiger's first victory for more than two years and 26 tournaments at the Chevron World Challenge and the psychological hold he still has on the golfing fraternity and he is a good bet.

Cork will win the league, Kerry will win Sam
THERE'S nothing like a scorned Kerryman and talking to any of them over the past few moments you can't help but notice the underlying seething anger with the way they lost the All-Ireland final. Add to that the procession of Dublin taunts since that day, intended or not, and you have a team with the best forwards in the country, a decent midfield when catching clean possession is irrelevant and a mean defence with two Ó Sés manning central berths.
This county gives the term 'chip on a shoulder' a new meaning and Jack O'Connor will have them firing for the season ahead.
That will be bad news for Cork who, having been destroyed with injuries last season, will start the year on top but fade once the open spaces of Croke Park come back to haunt them.

France will win the Grand Slam
Here's a chance to use that never-end-small-in-the-predictions-business line. That very line almost forced me to put England in this slot but a moment of calm reflection showed the Tindall-like error of my way.
Given France's World Cup off-the-field implosion you would think Wales and Ireland should have more armoury to claim this. But never write off Gallic flair and, just like Kerry, they have a point to prove and with a new coach Philippe Saint-Andre in charge they should provide a tour de force.

Picking the Chief

The United Synagogue has, predictably, decided not to take the radical step of holding a ballot to elect its next Chief Rabbi after Lord Sacks retires in September 2013.

But it has set up an tripartite structure to make the selection process more representative of the Chief Rabbinate?s constituents and, notably, women will play a greater role than they did in previous years.

But there are two comments made by US president Stephen Pack, who also chairs the Chief Rabbinate Trust, when he announced how the Chief would be chosen this week which are worth noting.

Following a consultation exercise within the US and the regions, it emerged that the quality people most want in a Chief Rabbi is to be ?a fantastic communicator? ? someone, Mr Pack said, who could not only address the Orthodox sector but ?be able to communicate on behalf of Anglo-Jewry?.

This is no great surprise but it does suggest that the selectors of the next Chief see him as a figurehead for the community as a whole. The non-Orthodox reaction will be interested.

There has been a lot of talk about having ?a rabbis? rabbi?, a phrase which is capable of meaning anything but, to some at least, suggesting someone more focused on internal Orthodox affairs than national issues.
Naturally, the next Chief will be expected to be someone the rabbis look up to.

But Mr Pack said: ?We are not going to appoint someone who thinks it?s their job to override the dayanim because that is not the way the Beth Din works? We are not looking for wholesale revolution.?

No copy cats, just coincidence...

There?s been weird stuff going on between The Times fashion pages and The JC fashion pages? cue X Files music.

Last Saturday, September 24, the Times carried a fashion story about impossibly high shoes, and how the fashion pack refused to give them up. Under the headline ?The fashion pack is really not over heels? new fashion editor Laura Craik wrote about ?taxi shoes?, how the fashion editors and top fashion bloggers were clinging on to their impossibly high heels and how this was fine if you had a car waiting to transport you between runway shows, but not so great if you were a real person having to occasionally walk or run?

Observant readers (and I am not talking religiously observant here) may have spotted that the most recent edition of the JC, September 30, which came out on Wednesday ? two days early because of Rosh Hashanah ? also contained a story about shoes, how the fashion pack were wearing ?taxi shoes? with impossibly high heels, and how this worked if you ?had a limo purring? at the kerb, but not so much if you were a real woman who needed to walk, etc.

To the casual observer it might have appeared that the JC had borrowed liberally from The Times story, except that the JC fashion pages containing the shoe story were completed on Thursday September 22, two days before the Times piece.

In today?s edition of the Times, Laura Craik is writing about the Crombie (or, in JC parlance, the boyfriend) coat, about the choices of coats out there, and about the versatility of one particular style of coat.

Your next edition of the JC, on October 7, will contain a spread on choosing your winter coat, the huge choice, the importance of choosing a coat that is versatile. Because of Rosh Hashanah, those pages were completed last Tuesday, on September 27 ? four days ahead of the Times piece.

Just to be clear, I am not for a nano-second suggesting that the Times might copy the JC, and I know I?m not copying the Times, and I also know that fashion pages cover the same ground, write about the same trends, etc. But Laura Craik and I both seem, almost uncannily, to be tuned into extremely similar, if not identical fashion vibes, making similar observations and coming to similar conclusions about readers and their purchases. As I said earlier, cue X Files music?

No perfect season, but Pack remain on track

John Riordan
THE dream of a perfect season is over for the Green Bay Packers. And the nightmare of 16 games without a victory has been avoided by the Indianapolis Colts.

Meanwhile, 22 of the 32 NFL teams, including the seven already guaranteed a post-season berth, can still realistically look beyond New Year's Day when the regular season is destined to reach a gripping climax.

While the clash of Tim Tebow's Denver Broncos and Tom Brady's New England Patriots in Colorado was the source of huge pre-match hype (even inspiring a skit on Saturday Night Live), it ended up being an easy victory for the Pats who clinched a ninth AFC East title in 11 seasons with their 41-23.

Instead the drama lay elsewhere, and the biggest story of an incredible day was the Kansas City Chiefs' unlikely win on the occasion of interim coach Romeo Crennel's first game, a surprising 19-14 victory that ended the Packers' 19-game winning streak, their first defeat since this day last year in New England.

"I personally always viewed the undefeated season as, really, just gravy,” coach Mike McCarthy said afterwards. “The goal was to get home-field advantage and win the Super Bowl. That's what we discussed. We were fortunate enough to be in the position to possibly achieve the undefeated season but we still have the primary goal in front of us, and that's to get home-field advantage.”

Incredibly, that Chiefs win, coupled with defeats for their AFC West rivals, the Broncos and the Oakland Raiders and surprise win for the San Diego Chargers over the Baltimore Racens means that all four teams can finish 8-8. In that wild scenario, Kansas City would advance and the Tebow phenomenon will crash and burn.

Oakland were the victims of an amazing Detroit Lions fightback in the dying seconds, a 98-yard drive that forced a 28-27 victory which was inspired by quarterback Matthew Stafford and one of the most impressive games of wide receiver Calvin Johnson’s career.

The AFC wild card race could go down to the wire with the New York Jets and the Tennessee Titans both losing while the Cincinnati Bengals won to put them back in contention for the sixth seed.

That Titans loss brought to an end that other famous (or infamous) streak. The Colts had been 0-13 for the season but their convincing 27-13 victory ended up being the franchise's first win in 14 years without Peyton Manning.

With the Pittsburgh Steelers facing a tough clash tonight against the San Francisco 49ers, the Ravens missed an opportunity in the late game to keep their arch rivals on their toes, losing 34-14 at San Diego.

And the other AFC North team, the aforementioned Bengals beat the St Louis Rams 20-13 to keep alive the possibility that three teams from the same division advance to the post-season.

The other top seed in the AFC, the Houston Texans were surprisingly beaten by the Carolina Panthers who benefited from another Cam Newton-inspired performance, the 28-13 away victory denting Houston’s plans for home advantage in January.

In the NFC, the New Orleans kept the pressure on the Packers for seeding with a big 42-20 win in Minnesota. Drew Brees threw for 412 yards and five touchdowns to lead the surging Saints to their sixth win in a row.

The NFC East was blown wide open. LeSean McCoy ran for three touchdowns as the Philadelphia Eagles hammered the Jets 45-19 to stay in contention for the division, a prospect which seemed impossible going into December.

If the Eagles beat the Dallas Cowboys (who won 31-15 in Tampa Bay on Saturday night) on Christmas Eve and the Giants are beaten by the Jets the same day, the possibility that all three teams, Phillie, Dallas and the Giants, finish 8-8 in which case the Eagles will advance.

The Giants walked themselves into this nightmare scenario with a gutless 23-10 defeat at home to the Washington Redskins.

“I'm very disappointed in how we played today,” coach Tom Coughlin admitted afterwards. “I accept responsibility for it. But I expected to see more quality execution and we didn't get that.”

Although the Atlanta Falcons, who won 41-14 against Jacksonville on Thursday night, joined the Lions as favourites for the two wild card spots, there are four teams snapping at their heels.

The Seattle Seahawks won at the 38-14 at the Chicago Bears and the Arizona Cardinals beat the always unlucky Cleveland Browns in overtime (20-17) to leave those three, the Seahawks, the Bears and the Cardinals on 7-7

Meanwhile, in the one and only game that carried no play-off implications, the Miami Dolphins beat the Buffalo Bills 30-23 in snowy west New York.

Ohio State Buckeyes vs. Florida Gators: Who will win the Gator Bowl and by how much? Poll

Both teams are 6-6. Much of the interest in this game centers on Ohio State's recent coaching hire of Urban Meyer, who was Florida's coach from 2005-10.

mike-brewster-braxton-miller.jpgSenior center Mike Brewster (50) will complete his standout Ohio State career and quarterback Braxton Miller (5) will finish his freshman season when the Buckeyes play Florida in Monday's Gator Bowl.

CLEVELAND, Ohio -- Ohio State's Buckeyes and Florida's Gators will play in a bowl game on Monday.

In most seasons, that would be a high-stakes matchup.

Not this time, when the teams play the Gator Bowl in Jacksonville, Florida. One thing we know for sure is that one of the perennial powerhouse college football teams will finish the 2011 season with a losing record.

Both Ohio State and Florida are 6-6. The Buckeyes went 3-5 in the Big Ten and the Gators were 3-5 in the SEC.

Much of the attention paid to this game centers around Urban Meyer. Ohio State has hired former Florida coach Meyer as its next coach, though he won't be on the sidelines for the Gator Bowl. Leading the Buckeyes will be Luke Fickell, who served as the team's interim coach this season and will stay at OSU as a member of Meyer's staff.

Fickell replaced Jim Tressel as the Buckeyes coach prior to the season. Tressel was forced to resign in the wake of the infamous memorabilia for tattoos/cash scandal, which led to the premature departure from OSU of quarterback Terrelle Pryor and multiple-game suspensions for several other key players.

Meyer stepped down as Florida's coach, citing health concerns and the desire to spend more time with his family, after the 2010 season. He had five years remaining on his Gators' contract, but gave that up and joined ESPN as an analyst. Meyer coached Florida to national titles in the 2006 and 2008 seasons. The Gators routed Ohio State, 41-14, in the 2006 season national championship game.

Ohio State's 2011 game results, in order: 42-0 win over Akron; 27-22 win over Toledo; 24-6 loss at Miami (Fla.); 37-17 win over Colorado; 10-7 loss to Michigan State; 34-27 loss at Nebraska; 17-7 win at Illinois; 33-29 win over Wisconsin; 34-20 win over Indiana; 26-23 loss (overtime) at Purdue; 20-14 loss to Penn State; 40-34 loss at Michigan.

Florida's results, in order: 41-3 win over Florida Atlantic; 39-0 win over UAB; 33-23 win over Tennessee; 48-10 win at Kentucky; 38-10 loss to Alabama; 41-11 loss at LSU; 17-6 loss at Auburn; 24-20 loss to Georgia; 26-21 win over Vanderbilt; 17-12 loss at South Carolina; 54-32 win over Furman; 21-7 loss to Florida State.

PSC forced to cancel trade union conference

The Palestine Solidarity Campaign has been forced to cancel a conference with trade unionists which was due to take place tomorrow.

The event was expected to promote boycott methods and encourage local groups to support BDS measures against Israel. Speakers were to include RMT general secretary Bob Crow.

In a statement, the PSC said the event would be rescheduled for next year and said the move was being made to avoid disrupting preparations for the day of strike action which unions are planning for November 30.

But I'm told that a lack of interest from trade unionists and insufficient numbers of registered participants had caused substantial fears over filling the Congress House venue in central London, and the obvious financial repercussions that would have resulted.

Despite all their talk, it's another example of the BDS movement's failure to generate substantial support.

Pub drinks to licence

A Golders Green pub will be celebrating the New Year with a kosher licence.

Earlier this year, the owners of The Castle, on the junction between Cricklewood Lane and Finchley Road, announced plans to rebrand as a Jewish venue.

For New Year's Eve revellers, its restaurant will be under Federation supervision.

The restaurant will serve kosher versions of pub staples, from an English breakfast to a Sunday roast, as well as traditional favourites such as salt beef and falafel.

Although the pub will open on Shabbat, it will serve only bar snacks and the restaurant will be shut. There are plans for a weekly Saturday night kosher barbecue. All alcohol on the premises will be kosher.

Following the award of the licence, 370 people attended a Chanucah party at The Castle.

Business partner Robert Greene said bookings and inquiries had been received from a range of Jewish organisations, as well as bar- and batmitzvah hosts.

There were also plans for communal organisations to run Friday-night and Shabbat events for young professionals at the venue.

"It's a great way to see in the New Year," Mr Greene said.

"Now we have the licence, we can really get going."

Mazel Tov: Royal succession change at last

It looks as though, finally, the UK's archaic laws on royal succession are to be scrapped. The 16 Commonwealth heads have agreed to change the law so that male and female heirs to the throne are treated equally.

David Cameron says he will put it to parliament at the next session, when, one hopes, even the crustiest and most conservative members will accept it.

The constitutional reform would also remove the ban on the spouse of a Catholic from taking the throne (a ban that was only in place for Catholics). Under the current system, had Kate Middleton been Catholic, Prince William would effectively have had to forfeit his right to the throne in order to marry her.

It's an outrageous example of discrimination, yet one deeply embedded in the UK's constitutional makeup. In 2011, there is simply no excuse for that kind of religious inequality (likewise that kind of gender inequality).

As a minority religious community ? one that, like the Catholic community in this country, has faced considerable persecution at times in history - we should welcome this as another step in the right direction for the UK.

Although it's not over yet. As the Telegraph explains: "A separate rule that the Sovereign must be a Protestant will not be changed because the monarch is Supreme Governor of the Church of England."

So while our royals are free to marry Jews, Hindus, Muslims or Catholics, any kids they have will have to adopt the faith of the royal parent. Could this lead to a situation where we have a monarch who is halachically Jewish, but is forced to renounce their birth-given faith in order to accede to the throne?

Ofcom rejects Islam TV appeal over bias ruling

Ofcom, the broadcasting standards watchdog, has rejected an appeal by the Islam Channel over its coverage of Israel.

The English-language satellite station had challenged a ruling last year that it breached Ofcom's broadcasting code in two programmes which discussed Israel's conduct in Gaza.

But Ofcom's broadcasting review committee, in a decision published this month, stated that the London-based channel had failed to maintain "an adequate and appropriate level of impartiality".

The committee noted the channel's difficulties in finding guests to represent the Israeli government viewpoint.

But it went on: "The Israeli-Palestinian conflict is, however, a matter of political controversy and the Islam Channel? was therefore obliged to ensure some discussion of the policies and actions of the Israeli government which represented its viewpoint."

The two programmes under scrutiny were an edition of Umma Talk, broadcast on October 14 2009, and an edition of Politics and Beyond - presented by Cordoba Foundation founder Anas Altikriti - that went out two days later.

At one point during Umma Talk, its presenter Azad Ali commented that Gaza was "an open prison blocked from all sides".

One of his guests, Ismail Patel, the chairman of Friends of Al Aqsa, also said: "In a way, if you're a prisoner, you'd be better off than if you were in Gaza."

In Politics and Beyond, Ofcom noted comments critical of Israel made by guests Andrew Slaughter MP and Daniel Machover, a co-founder of Lawyers for Palestinian Human Rights.

Mr Slaughter referred to the "collective punishment of the people of Gaza", while Mr Machover said: "You've got to deal with the fact that there's a big driver within the Israeli society for there to be wars because it generates jobs, it generates money."

The Ofcom review committee said that the Islam Channel was "required to ensure that alternative viewpoints are adequately represented".

Although the channel's breaches of the broadcasting code were not serious enough to merit a "statutory sanction", it was "considered appropriate for the Islam Channel to be invited to attend a meeting with Ofcom", to discuss how to improve its compliance with impartiality rules.

Mitt Romney hopes for Iowa win as rival Republicans wobble

Republican presidential nomination race rocked as Bachmann's Iowa campaign chair walks out on her

Republican front-runner Mitt Romney is showing increasing signs of optimism in the run-up to the Iowa caucuses on 3 January as the campaign of one of his rivals for the presidential nomination came close to imploding and others struggled.

Romney has belatedly devoted time and money to Iowa, which he initially ignored, and could be rewarded with a first or second place, according to polls published on Thursday.

The Rasmussen poll puts Romney on 23%, Ron Paul 22%, former senator Rick Santorum on 16%, former House speaker Newt Gingrich on 13% and Texas governor Rick Perry on 13%.

A strong finish in Iowa, the first of the contests to choose a Republican nominee to take on Barack Obama, would provide Romney with momentum for those that follow and could wrap up the race for the nomination by the end of the month. Romney would then face Obama for the White House in November. Rasmussen put Romney on 45% to Obama's 39%, his biggest lead yet over the president.

Romney's resurrection as Republican favourite comes after a turbulent year that has seen rivals briefly occupy the front-runner slot: Michele Bachmann, Perry, Herman Cain, Gingrich and Paul. Santorum, who last week was endorsed by an influential Christian evangelical leader, is having a late poll surge.

Bachmann's campaign was in total disarray on Thursday. On Wednesday night, in a surprise development, the chairman of her Iowa campaign, state senator Kent Sorenson, drove to a Paul rally, asked one of his staff if he would like his support and went on stage to announce he was switching to Paul because of the way the Republican party was ganging up against him.

Bachmann made a bad situation worse by claiming Sorenson, who had been with her from the early days of her campaign, had gone for money. "Kent Sorenson personally told me he was offered a large sum of money to go to work for the Paul campaign," she said, prompting her Iowa political director, Wes Enos, to put out a statement disavowing her claim and insisting no money was involved. "I cannot, in good conscience, watch a good man like Ken Sorenson be attacked as a 'sell-out'," Enos said. If Bachmann does badly on Tuesday, she may quit the race.

Romney, right-wing but closer to the centre than his rivals, was initially hesitant about becoming involved in Iowa after spending $10m and hundreds of hours campaigning fruitlessly there in the 2008 nomination process. His failure to win damaged his chances in later contests.

But he has been criss-crossing the state by bus this week and attracting good crowds, backed by an advertising blitz. Either his campaign or the political action committees backing him spent $2.85m (1.85m) advertising in Iowa in the month up to Christmas, a sum matched only by Perry. Since Christmas, a further $1.2m has been spent.

Paul appears to have the better on-the-ground organisation, but even if Romney was to come second to Paul, he would still be in a strong position as Paul, whose libertarian policies are outside the Republican mainstream, is unlikely to win the nomination.

In another sign of growing confidence that he can do well in Iowa, Romney announced he plans to return to Iowa for New Year's eve after a brief campaign visit to New Hampshire and will be in Iowa on caucus night when, in anticipation of a good result, he has agreed to a series of media interviews.

The former governor of Massachusetts struggled in 2008 because social conservatives, who make up estimated 50% of the Republican caucus-goers, regard him as inconsistent on abortion, gays and other issues. But these concerns appear to be trumped by worries about jobs and the economy. Romney refused to make predictions in public about the result. "I just want to do well here. I'm happy that I'm getting an enthusiastic response," he said.

Larry Sabato, one of America's leading pundits and a professor of politics at Virginia University, said: "As the primary season begins, and after a year when the polls looked like a multi-dimensional rollercoaster, we are back where we started in January. We see Mitt Romney as the strong favourite to be the 2012 GOP presidential nominee. This outlook is the result of two factors: the weakness of the other Republican candidates in this underwhelming field, as well as Romney's considerable advantages in money, organisation and establishment support."

Cleveland Browns vs. Pittsburgh Steelers: Who will win and by how much? Poll

The game will end the season for the Browns, who are 4-11. The Steelers, 11-4 and playoff-bound, defeated the Browns, 14-3, in Pittsburgh on Dec. 8.

CLEVELAND, Ohio -- The Cleveland Browns will finish their 2011 season on Sunday against the Pittsburgh Steelers at Browns Stadium.

The Browns are 4-11, in fourth and last place in the AFC North, five games behind the third-place Cincinnati Bengals (9-6) and seven games behind the Steelers and Baltimore Ravens (both 11-4).

For the Browns, it will be the finish to their 11th losing season in 13 campaigns since returning to the NFL as a franchise in 1999.

For the Steelers, who have clinched a playoff berth, it's a must-win game if they hope to win the division. Baltimore, also guaranteed a playoff spot, owns the tie-breaker over Pittsburgh, and would clinch the division title with a win at Cincinnati on Sunday. The Bengals, meanwhile, would lock up a wild card playoff spot with a win or tie against the Ravens.

The Steelers defeated the Browns, 14-3, in Pittsburgh on Dec. 8 -- the game during which Steelers linebacker James Harrison landed his infamous helmet-to-helmet hit on Browns quarterback Colt McCoy, who suffered a concussion on the play. Tony Grossi wrote the game story for The Plain Dealer.

Cleveland.com's Browns history database includes Plain Dealer stories on every regular season and playoff game in Browns history, through the 2010 season. Click here for the first of five cleveland.com pages that link to Plain Dealer game stories on every Browns vs. Steelers game in the history of the series.

The usual one-sided nature of the rivalry has been well-documented in recent years.

A short summary:

The Browns have won 56 regular season games against the Steelers and lost 61. Pittsburgh has won both playoff meetings, defeating Cleveland in a 1994 season second-round playoff game and in a 2002 season wild card game.

After joining the NFL in 1950, the Browns won their first eight games against Pittsburgh and 16 of the first 18. The Browns led the series, 32 wins to nine for the Steelers, until Pittsburgh dominated the rivalry from the mid-1970s into the early 1980s, winning 14 of 16 games during one strech.

When the Browns left Cleveland for Baltimore -- becoming the Ravens -- following the 1995 season, they had won 52 regular season games against Pittsburgh and lost 40.

Since the series resumed with the Browns' return in 1999, Pittsburgh has won 21 of the 25 regular season meetings with Cleveland, including 15 of the last 16.
