Carlos Moncrief's homer helps Lake County edge Cedar Rapids, 2-1: Minor-league report

Mills' homer not enough for Clippers; Pomeranz works into fifth inning of Aeros' loss; Burnette homers but Kinston falters; Scrappers blanked by Hudson Valley; three-run fifth rallies Lake Erie to win.

A Lake County Captains

Captains 2, Kernels 1: RH Cole Cook (5-10, 4.28) allowed one unearned run in six innings as host Lake County edged Cedar Rapids (Iowa). RF Carlos Moncrief (.239) homered for the Captains. Cook gave up four hits, walked one and struck out four. RH Clayton Ehlert (1.79) earned his 11th save with a scoreless ninth. 1B Jesus Aguilar (.292) singled, hit his 26th double and scored a run for Lake County.

Notes: Going into Monday night's game, Aguilar was second in the Midwest League in home runs (19), third in RBI (68), third in slugging percentage (.539) and seventh in doubles.

AAA Columbus Clippers

IronPigs 4, Clippers 1: Beau Mills' homer broke up a shutout, but the Clippers managed just five hits in dropping the International League road game Lehigh Valley (Pa.). Corey Kluber allowed eight hits and three runs in five innings of work.

Notes: Going into Monday night's game, LH reliever Nick Hagadone (3-1, two saves, 3.64) was 1-0 with one save and an 0.57 ERA in his past 10 games, fanning 18 and walking three in 15 innings.

The Crushers (28-30) claimed their sixth win in their last eight games.

Notes: RH starter Josh Roberts (6-3, 3.59) is 4-0 with a 2.36 ERA in his past seven games, striking out 26 and walking nine in 45 innings.

Syria resolution faces Russian opposition at UN security council

During tense debate at UN in New York, Moscow says it will oppose 'meddling' attempt to force Assad to resign

Russia has declared its intention to scupper any attempt to force President Bashar al-Assad of Syria to step down, denouncing a push for a new United Nations security council resolution backed by the US and UK as "meddling" that could lead to conflict and military intervention.

In outspoken comments to a packed security council in New York, the Russian ambassador to the UN, Vitaly Churkin, was scathing about efforts led by the Arab League and backed by Washington, Paris and London to secure a new resolution that would call on Assad to stand aside.

"The international community should not be meddling in economic sanctions or through the use of military force. We will not stand for any sanctions resolution or using the council's tool box to foment conflict and military intervention in the future," Churkin said.

Russia's contribution, together with a statement from the Assad regime itself, stood in stark contrast to a virtually unified voice from security council members who lined up to decry the violence in Syria that the UN says has claimed at least 5,400 lives over the past 10 months.

Speaking after the meeting, the US secretary of state, Hillary Clinton, responded to Russia's discordant note by insisting there was no intention "to pursue any kind of military intervention. This is a crisis that should be resolved peacefully".

She said she would be speaking to the Russian foreign minister, Sergei Lavrov, who had been expected to attend the meeting but was pointedly absent.

William Hague, the foreign secretary, also emphasised the peaceful nature of the joint resolution, rebutting claims by the Syrian ambassador to the UN, Bashar Ja'afari, that it was an attempt to reimpose colonialism on the region.

"This is not the west telling Syria what to do," Hague said. "It is not the permanent members of the UN security council imposing their view. This is the Arab world calling on the UN security council to help address the crisis in Syria and the threat which it poses to the stability of their region."

Hague also stressed that the UN text did not call for western or Arab military intervention, unlike last year's resolution on Libya, which led eventually to the overthrow of Muammar Gaddafi and which still rankles with Russia.

The draft expresses "grave concern" over the bloodshed, and "the continued transfer of weapons into Syria, which fuels the violence", and calls on member states "to take necessary steps to prevent such flow of arms" ? a clear message to Moscow, Assad's principal supporter on the world stage and main source of arms.

"The resolution does not call for military action and could not be used to authorise it," Hague said. But he went on to warn Assad that "measures will be considered by this council if there is not an immediate end to the violence".

Speaking for the Syrian regime, Ja'afari launched a salvo against the Arab League, which he accused of violating its own founding principles by turning for help to the UN security council, which had been the source of "hundreds of vetos against Arab causes".

Russia's unbending opposition to a resolution now paves the way for a protracted round of closed-door negotiations over the next 24 hours in New York. Analysts and diplomats say Russia could yet soften its stance by abstaining or, much less likely, voting for the draft ? if a clause banning the use of force were introduced.

The draft currently emphasises "the need to resolve the current crisis in Syria peacefully" but does not explicitly exclude future military action. Negotiations are to be held today ahead of a vote tomorrow. China, which also has a veto, would probably follow Russia.

The fight over dealing with Syria is a perfect cauldron of Russia's main foreign policy concerns: anger at what it sees as a unipolar world led by the United States, a belief in the inviolability of national sovereignty, and an attempt to hold on to Soviet-era allies and customers that are increasingly few in number.

The main official narrative inside Russia continues to be that the popular uprisings across the Middle East, like Russia's own protests, are a US-led plot to gain influence and resources.

On the ground in Syria, meanwhile, government forces continued a campaign to reclaim pockets of Damascus from rebel groups which had briefly seized them ? producing dramatic and morale-boosting TV pictures for the rebels but possibly a distorted image of the true balance of forces in the country of 23 million people.

The sound of artillery and gunfire thundered throughout the afternoon in the areas of Kfar Badna and Saqba as irregulars fought street battles with loyalist forces who had earlier retaken contested areas in northern Damascus.

Several dozen tanks were seen moving towards the east of the capital in the afternoon, until the past weekend a rare sight in the heart of the regime's power base.

Opposition groups remain vastly outnumbered and outgunned in Damascus, but say they have opened up a guerrilla campaign aimed at wearing down the loyalist military.

So far there is little sign of that happening in the capital, which remains under the regime's control and is heavily guarded by security forces whose senior ranks remain solidly supportive of Assad.

However, the embattled president's troops continue to fight a more organised opposition in the country's fourth city, Homs, where tanks and artillery were again firing intensively into the rebel-held Bab al-Amr district. Residents of Homs, the frontline of an armed insurgency against the Assad family's four-decade rule, say neighbourhoods are fast being emptied of families whom loyalists suspect of supporting the rebellion.

They described dire living conditions, with poor sanitation and streets that are regularly raked by gunfire.

Over the past week, Syria has intensified its crackdown against what is now a full blown insurgency in many parts. The nearby city of Hama has seen renewed violence, although residents said the military had now pulled back to the city limits after four days of arrests and incursions.

"There are many families homeless here and many homes destroyed," said Manhal Abo Bakr, a resident of Hama and a citizen journalist for the global campaigning group Avaaz. Hama was the scene of a brutal massacre carried out by Assad's father, Hafez, in 1982, when he claimed to have been targeting Sunni extremists who were plotting against him.

League matters

John Fogarty
SO just how important has the top flight of Gaelic football’s secondary competition been in recent times?

Significant would be the answer – at least up until this year when the GAA, in their wisdom, decided to alter the structure of the elite group.

More of that anon but for now let’s look at how much league success has been mirrored later on in the season.

Five of the last nine Division 1 winners have gone on to win more silverware in September, while Dublin reached last year’s league final and went one further against Kerry in the All-Ireland decider.

In 2008, Kerry lost out to Derry in the league before reaching an All-Ireland final against Tyrone.

It has been encouraging to see so much made out of a competition that has been thrown around like a rag-doll by GAA authorities.

But just when its importance had reached its zenith, the decision was made to re-introduce semi-finals.

In an eight-team division, that threatens to de-incentivise the competition.

As little as five or six points from six games could be enough to see a team through to the knock-out stages.

Obviously, the new measure was brought in to ensure there are no dead rubbers at the end of the league proper (there were none in Division 1 last year), while the extra revenue generated by two extra fixtures won’t be sneezed at.

On Monday, Conor Counihan, who has led Cork to the last two Division 1 titles, joked he might be able to afford pulling back his team like a horse before insisting he won’t be holding anything back.

But it remains to be seen whether other managers will go full throttle for their games.

In rugby’s RaboDirect Pro12 where the top four teams qualify for the semi-finals, clubs can time their runs accordingly. What’s to say the stronger Allianz Division 1 counties won’t do the same? We’ll remind you of what Dublin’s Pat Gilroy said about the return of the semi-finals last year.

“It kind of makes the league a bit of a strange thing, that, in the middle of the last game you could be making a semi-final if you win by two points or be relegated if you lose by two.

“You have four teams on top and two on the bottom so there’s only one team in the middle and I think it makes a bit of a farce of the league because the team that is fourth could have five points in the league and still win the league.”

Cork’s win-every-game policy should see them finish in the top four. Even though they are without the retired John Miskella and Daniel Goulding and Ciaran Sheehan remain sidelined, there is enough depth in the panel to sustain a decent league campaign.

The sight of Graham Canty back at such an early juncture in the season indicates the level of intent.

Last year’s finalists Dublin will be keen to ensure they maintain the feel-good factor in the capital after last September.

Similar to Counihan, Gilroy also likes to win as many games as possible and he’ll be looking to keep a lot of his 2011 champions on their toes.

While their attack is arguably the best in the country, Kerry’s defence needs running repairs although Shane Enright should come in after injury foiled him last year.
David Moran’s return from his cruciate setback will give Jack O’Connor more options in midfield.

Given they are the last team out in the championship, Mayo’s need to have a prolonged league campaign is great and the bevy of forwards James Horan now has at his beck and call is timely after building from the back last year.

The 2011 Division 2 champions Donegal’s fangs will be blunted in the early stages of the league with Michael Murphy and Colm McFadden missing.

Martin Clarke’s return to Australia will put more of an onus on Benny Coulter to come up trumps but their forward line should see they stay up.

No other team are as weakened by absences as Armagh who must do without their significant Crossmaglen contingent for the time being as well as captain StevenMcDonnell. Laois surprised many by gaining promotion from an ultra-competitive Division 2 and their defence is quite mean but their attack will need to catch fire to survive.
Top four (no particular order): Cork, Dublin, Kerry, Mayo Bottom two (no particular order): Armagh, Laois

Seasonal outlook: High pressure dominates - Brifer wetter spells, Jan 02 - 18:19

*February* The month begins on a westerly note with high pressure to the south and west, this becoming a large feature to the west through the first week, a colder northerly digging in as low pressure clears to the east of the British Isles. High pressure reasserts over the UK and persists as a large moving feature over the UK, through to mid-month until declining only to be replaced by a developing feature to the east, the potential for a rather wintry spell to establish as low pressure to the west and southwest attempts to push into the UK. This block should hold fast so a rather mixed regime of colder weather entrenched to the east, with less cold and eventually milder weather desperately attempting to dislodge this, on current evidence without much success until the latter stages of the month. Less cold weather should reach western and north-western Britain, but all areas will see a rather strong southerly to south-easterly flow for much of the time, central and eastern Britain remains rather chilly for much of the time throughout. *March* The anticyclonic block looks as if it'll be maintained, so much so that there is startlingly little to suggest that this will be removed through until mid-March, in the interim it'll be high pressure conditions to the east, a strong southerly flow to the west, this only easing as high pressure periodically ridges through the UK and stalled low pressure to the west fills and moves away. Any precipitation should be concentrated through western and north-western where it'll be very windy at times too with gales at times. Through the middle of the month at long last the block should be shunted out of the way allowing low pressure to break through and the Atlantic floodgates open to the whole the UK. Showers or longer outbreaks of rain, it'll still be on the cool side for many and windy, drier weather establishing once more across the south as pressure rises. The month ends where it began with yet another strong rise of pressure, an anticyclone drifting into the UK to establish to the east, another block forming the halt the progress of Atlantic systems. Bright and sunny for many, a chilly and brisk easterly top north-easterly flow establishing to take us through to the beginning of April. Simon Email me at simon.keeling@weatheronline.co.uk

Sacks challenged over interfaith views

A number of rabbis here have been talking about an article in the latest edition of Tradition, the American journal of Orthodox thought published by the mainstream Rabbinical Council of America.

It is written by Alan Jotkowitz, who is director of the Jakobovits Centre for Medical Ethics at Ben Gurion University, and is a critique of the interfaith views of Chief Rabbi Lord Sacks.

The author is an admirer of the Chief Rabbi whom he describes as ?probably the world?s most foremost expositor of Jewish values and ethics?.

Nevertheless, he questions whether the Chief Rabbi?s attitude towards other religions has strayed too far from conventional rabbinic positions.

The title of the article describes Sacks?s theology as ?radical? ? generally not a term of commendation in these circles.

Jotkowitz focuses mostly on the Chief?s 2002 book, The Dignity of Difference (which was subsequently revised after leading strictly Orthodox rabbis branded it heretical). Comments such as ?In heaven there is truth; on earth there are truths? ? rewritten in the second edition ? lent credence to the truth claims of other faiths, according to the Chief Rabbi?s critics.

But Jotkowitz is not wholly convinced by the revisions and argues that the Chief?s ideas remains theologically problematic.

In contrast, Jotkowitz says that Rabbi Joseph Soloveitchik ?makes it clear that a Jew has to believe that his or her faith is supreme and there is an absolute truth to that faith, even at the expense of the beliefs of other religions?.

Stephen Lawrence killers to launch appeal

Gary Dobson starts appeal procedure against murder conviction, David Norris also expected to appeal but has yet to lodge papers

One of two men jailed for the racist murder of Stephen Lawrence has started the process of appealing against his conviction earlier this month.

The move by Gary Dobson, 36, who was sentenced to at least 15 years and two months at the Old Bailey, was confirmed by the Court of Appeal.

David Norris, 35, who was given a minimum of 14 years and three months for the murder is also expected to seek to appeal although papers have not yet been lodged.

The two were part of a group of five white men who were suspected of the killing in 1993, but had escaped justice through police failings and because some witnesses were too scared to come forward.

Lawrence, 18, was murdered on 22 April 1993, as he and a friend waited for a bus in Eltham, south-east London.

The trial judge, Mr Justice Treacy, said that the killing was a "terrible and evil crime" and urged police not to "close the file" on catching the rest of the killers who he said had committed the act "for no other reason than racial hatred".

"A totally innocent 18-year-old youth on the threshold of a promising life was brutally cut down in the street in front of eyewitnesses by a racist, thuggish gang," he told Norris and Dobson.

"You were both members of that gang. I have no doubt at all that you fully subscribed to its views and attitudes."

Dobson had previously been acquitted of the murder in 1996, after Lawrence's family brought a private prosecution. In May this year, the court of appeal quashed his acquittal after deciding that scientific evidence was sufficiently new and compelling.

The convicted men, who both continue to protest their innocence, claimed that the scientific evidence against them came from contamination caused by failings in the way the exhibits had been stored over the last 18 years but failed to produce a single expert to testify in support of their claims.

London riot sentences 'absolutely right'

Leading prosecutor supports stiff jail terms given to rioters, saying many excuses given in court are no form of legal defence

One of the country's leading prosecutors has defended the stiff sentences handed out to hundreds of rioters in London last summer and derided the excuses given by some of them in court.

Alison Saunders said the sentences were "entirely in line" with the guidelines given to judges and magistrates for violent disorder. In at least one recent case she considered a four-year jail term to be too lenient and has referred it to the attorney general, asking for an increase.

Saunders, who is in charge of the Crown Prosecution Service in London, said her team had dealt with 2,000 cases in six months, and fresh ones were being referred to them by the police.

"The sentencing guidelines were often quoted. People were saying the sentences were outside the guidelines," she said.

"They weren't. When you look at them, you can take in aggravating features. This was sheer lawlessness on a large scale. That was a pretty massive aggravating feature ? the prosecutions were absolutely right.

"It was people taking advantage of the situation, it was widespread criminality, and there is no excuse for it. Some of the defences we are now seeing in cases going to trial ? people saying they were curious: 'I just happened to go into Currys and pick up this TV because I was curious'."

"They have mentioned duress, and some people are saying they got caught up in the heat of the moment. But that is more mitigation than a defence. It is not a defence to say: 'I did it because everyone else was doing it.'

"If it hadn't been stopped, who knows where we would have ended up."

Saunders said that, during the first days of disorder, she saw "speedy justice".

Of the first 83 cases before the courts, almost all of the defendants (88%) pleaded guilty, a higher proportion than usual.

Saunders said:"It was interesting getting people to court very quickly, while it was all still fresh in everyone's mind, with the evidence, and seeing how many people pleaded guilty.

"There is something to be learned there about speedy justice ? making sure you get the right evidence into court. There is none of this playing the system so everyone forgets, or witnesses don't turn up."

The CPS in London has prosecuted 1,371 people so far and there are 610 defendants still in the court system.

"We have dealt with 2,000 finalised cases, but every time we get rid of some, more come into the system. We are still getting cases charged and coming in every week.

"We are still running at the same pace that we have been since the disorder last year. We set up a specialist unit to deal with [the riots] and our caseload has not been falling."

Saunders referred to the recent prosecution of Adam Khan Ahmadzai, 20.

"It was a man who started from one end of Croydon High Street, where we had a picture of him, to the other end, where we had his DNA.

"In between those two points he committed 16 different offences. Either burglary, robbery, violent disorder or egging on the crowd.

"He had no previous convictions. There was no excuse for his behaviour at all. It has nothing to do with 'He doesn't trust the police, he doesn't like the police.'

"He was sentenced to four years and we have referred it to the attorney general's office as an unduly lenient sentence."

Saunders said that at the height of the disturbances, she was called at 3am and asked if she had any more prosecutors available to staff Highbury magistrates court in north London.

She didn't, so went to the court herself. "That was the first night we had overnight courts. It was actually really exciting. I hadn't been in court prosecuting for seven years but it's a bit like riding a bike, you don't forget.

"Most of my senior management team happened to be there. Me, my two deputies and then the director of public prosecutions [Keir Starmer] came down to check we were all right. You could not have got a more overly qualified prosecuting team."

Saunders said they have been doing trials of live links to court ? where police officers give evidence from their police stations, rather than having to go to court to give evidence.

They have also been using video links between police stations and courts so suspects do not have to be transferred for first appearances.

Both should be ready for use during the Olympics should there be any trouble, Saunders said.

Los Angeles Lakers reportedly express interest in Cleveland Cavaliers backup guard Ramon Sessions

Lakers reportedly have interest in backup point guard

Cleveland Cavaliers lose to Raptors, 104-96View full sizeCavaliers guard Ramon Sessions remains the subject of trade rumors, including ones that link him to the Los Angeles Lakers
CLEVELAND -- Ramon Sessions' name has been linked to trade rumors since the June night the Cavaliers selected Kyrie Irving in the draft.

The asset-poor New York Knicks were believed to have interest in the backup point guard as the lockout ended, but plucked an injured Baron Davis from waivers instead. Now, comes a Yahoo report the Los Angeles Lakers have inquired about Sessions.

Cavaliers general manager Chris Grant wouldn't be doing his job if he weren't listening to offers from the Lakers and others. Sessions and starting power forward Antawn Jamison are the Cavaliers most likely to be dealt before the March 15 deadline.

The Lakers' interest in Sessions is understandable given their need for a veteran point guard to back up 37-year-old Derek Fisher. With Steve Blake injured, they have turned to rookies Andrew Goudelock and Darius Morris. The Lakers also reportedly have interest in Gilbert Arenas.

Los Angeles' two first-round picks -- including one acquired from the Dallas Mavericks (top-20 protected) in the Lamar Odom deal -- certainly would appeal to a rebuilding club like the Cavaliers. But it's hard to imagine the Lakers part with either first rounder until they know what's happening with Dwight Howard.

In other words, don't expect a deal for Sessions to get done immediately, if at all. He is making $4.3 million this season and has a player option for $4.6 million for the 2012-13 season. It's unclear whether Sessions plans to exercise the option.

The Lakers easily could absorb Sessions' contract with the $8.9-million trade exception received in the Odom deal.

He is averaging 9.1. points, 4.3 assists and 21 minutes in support of Irving whose minutes figure to grow. Yes, Sessions is shooting just 34 percent, but if he were dealt to a contender he'd be asked primarily to organize and run an offense not supply points. The Lakers aren't going to be the only contender looking for a veteran point guard between now and the deadline. Grant can afford to be patient.

A guide for the perplexed

This is for MPs and MEPS, of whatever party, who appear to be intellectually challenged.

1. If someone appears at a celebration, and sits next to you wearing full Nazi uniform, it's time to go home. Do not even think of posing for a picture. You will not look good. Early Day Motions will be tabled.

2. If you even think about making a comparison between the treatment of present-day Palestinians and either Holocaust behaviour or 19th century antisemitism, you need to lie down in a dark room for several days. You will not look good.

3. Do not blog citing Hitler in any way, shape or form. You will not look good.

4. Do not leap to condemn stupidities uttered by the famous if you aren't bothering to condemn blatant antisemitism on your own doorstep. You will not look good.

5. And finally, if you have done any or (horrors) all of the above, consider whether being in the public eye is the right place for you. After all, you want to look good, don't you?

Are the Cleveland Indians still well-armed in the minor leagues? Paul Hoynes analysis

Following the trades of top prospects Adam White and Drew Pomeranz, is the cupboard bare of pitching prospects for the Indians? Here's a look at the top arms in the minors.

huff-tribe-2011-angels-nohit-vert-cc.jpgView full sizeDavid Huff's solid work in three spot starts in July have moved him to the top of the Indians' depth chart when assessing the team's minor-league pitching prospects.

ARLINGTON, Texas -- The big prospects with the big arms have left the building.

Right-hander Alex White and left-hander Drew Pomeranz, projected to be No.1 or No.2 starters for the Indians in the near future, were traded a week ago to Colorado for right-hander Ubaldo Jimenez, who already is what Pomeranz and White are trying to become.

So what's left in the cookie jar? Who are the best of the rest pitchers in the Indians' farm system? Here's a look at the top 20:

1. LHP David Huff, 26, Class AAA Columbus: Coming off an impressive three-start performance in the big leagues. Revamped delivery has given him more command and velocity, touching 94 mph. Middle-of-rotation candidate.

2. RHP Jeanmar Gomez, 23, Columbus: Pitched in the big leagues in the last two seasons for the Tribe. Sinker/slider pitcher who puts the ball on the ground. Could be fourth or fifth starter.

3. LHP Nick Hagadone, 25, Columbus: Hard-throwing lefty is another bullpen prospect. Indians acquired him from Boston in the Victor Martinez deal.

4. RHP Zach McAllister, 23, Columbus: Made his big-league debut this year in an one-and-done performance. Big guy who can pitch a lot of innings. Projects to be middle to back-end of the rotation starter.

5. RHP Zach Putnam, 24, Columbus: Fifth-round pick in 2008. Has good stuff, needs to keep the ball down. Middle reliever/set-up man in the big leagues.

6. RHP Austin Adams, 24, Class AA Akron: He's as converted college shortstop who has hit 100 mph with a good breaking ball. Needs work on change-up and command, but is considered a major-league depth pitcher right now.

7. LHP Scott Barnes, 23, Columbus: Could be a starter or back-end reliever. Tough on lefties. Was 7-4 with 3.68 ERA when he injured his knee.

8. RHP Chen-Chang Lee, 24, Columbus: Bullpen prospect with good arm strength and a funky motion. Drew a lot of interest at the trade deadline. Is a combined 5-1 with 87 strikeouts in 61 1/3 innings at Columbus and Class AA Akron.

9. RHP Josh Judy, 25, Columbus: He's already had two tours with the Tribe this year. He's closing at Columbus, striking out 51 in 41 1/3 innings. Set-up candidate in the big leagues.

10. LHP T.J. McFarland, 21, Akron: Sinker/slider pitcher, who is tough on lefties. Projects as fourth or fifth starter.

11. LHP Matt Packer, 23, Akron: Has four pitches and knows how to use them. Having good second half at Akron, increasing strikeouts with good command. Could be fourth or fifth starter. In Jeremy Sowers, Aaron Laffey, Scott Lewis mold of lefties.

12. LHP Kelvin De La Cruz, 22, Akron: He's starting at Akron, but path to the big leagues in probably in the pen. He's tough against lefties.

13. LHP Mike Rayl, 22, Akron: He's similar to Packer. Made himself a prospect this year for the big-league rotation.

14. RHP Clayton Cook, 21, Class A Kinston: He's shown potential for three above-average pitches -- fastball, curve and change -- at Kinston. Ninth-round pick in 2008.

15. LHP Giovanni Soto, 20, Kinston: Acquired from Detroit last year in the Jhonny Peralta trade. He has 58 strikeouts in 56 2/3 innings this year.

16. RHP Felix Sterling, 18, Class A Lake County: He's 6-2 and 240 pounds. He's 2-1 with a 2.20 ERA in three starts at Lake County. Started the season in the Arizona Rookie League, going 2-3 with a 4.10 ERA in six game, including four starts.

17. RHP Michael Goodnight, 22, Lake County: The Tribe's 13th-round pick out of the University of Houston in 2010. He's 5-10 with 90 strikeouts in 104 1/3 innings at Lake County.

18. LHP Elvis Araujo, 20, Arizona Rookie League: Araujo is 6-4 and 246 pounds. He's 5-1 with a 3.68 ERA in nine starts with 39 strikeouts and 14 walks in 44 innings.

19. RHP Rob Bryson, 23. Akron: Acquired from Milwaukee in CC Sabathia trade. Big arm, big strikeout totals, but has had trouble staying healthy.

20. RHP Tyler Sturdevant, 25, Akron: The Tribe's 27th-round pick out of New Mexico State in 2008. He's 4-2 with a 1.98 ERA with 44 strikeouts in 41 innings. Has a WHIP (walks plus hits divided by innings) of 0.95.

Hector Rondon and Jason Knapp were not included because they've been injured much of the season.

Starring role for TV extra

Britain's oldest television extra celebrated her 100th birthday in the company of a soap opera villain.

Lottie Goodwin, a resident at the Morris Feinmann care home in south Manchester, retired from the screen only last year, having appeared in Coronation Street, Brookside, Hollyoaks and Darling Buds of May among other popular series.

She has been a regular extra in Emmerdale and long-time friend Chris Chittell, who plays Eric Pollard in the soap, brought star quality to the birthday bash.

Praising Ms Goodwin, Mr Chittell said walk-on extras "are on their feet all the time and Lottie only left Emmerdale eight months ago. That shows the measure of the woman. She is a joy, always upbeat and never complains."

Ms Goodwin said: "I would go back to work tomorrow if I could. I loved every single day."

More than 50 guests joined the party, including 13 great-grandchildren.
