Greek Jews suffer in financial crisis

Being a Jew in Greece already has its difficulties.

One faces prejudice on a regular basis, and any reference to the Jewish community as a whole usually involves conspiracy theories about how Jews are responsible for every evil or great event happening in the world.

The financial crisis just added another problem to the list. Soaring taxes and rocketing unemployment has hit the country's 7,500-strong Jewish community as hard as other Greek citizens.

Members of the Jewish community in Athens are used to helping each other out, and their institutions rely heavily on their donations. So dropping contributions have meant that standard community services are being starved of cash.

Benjamin Albala, president of the Jewish Community of Athens, says: "Funerals, weddings and other such simchot have been reduced since our members ask to pay less for these services."

Donations and the payment of membership fees to synagogues, burial societies and other community institutions have fallen by 50 per cent - and they are still falling.

"There are many members who refuse to pay their annual subscription, which is meant to support religious, spiritual and educational practices of the community," says Rabbi Izaak Mizan.

Meanwhile, the number of members who cannot make ends meet as a result of the crisis keeps on rising, and many are turning to ask for help from their synagogues and other community bodies.

The main reason for the tanking incomes of Athens community members is that many rely for business on the property market, which like elsewhere in Europe, has come crashing down. Rents have tumbled along with property prices. "Tenants ask for a 30 per cent reduction in rent and many leave, breaking the contracts, since their business has gone bankrupt," says Mr Albala.

The extreme levels of unemployment among young people is also a source of huge anxiety to the community. "The community has created a list of unemployed young people and we are trying to help them find jobs," says Mr Albala.

The official unemployment rate in Greece is about 20 per cent, but actual unemployment is thought to be much higher.

Meanwhile, as the government struggles to pass the structural reforms that Europe's politicians require in order to release the latest multi-billion bailout, the Greek far-right appears to be making inroads into mainstream politics.

Two members of the far-right Popular Orthodox Rally (LAOS) have resigned and are about to run in the upcoming elections under the banner of the poll-leading New Democracy Party. Adonis Georgiadis and Makis Voridis decided to resign from LAOS when asked by their party not to support the austerity bill.

The two voted in favour of the package of reforms and few days later they announced their move. In the past they have both made antisemitic statements.

After the "Jew goal", the "Jew punch"?

Remember the “Jew goal”? Well now it seems another sport may have adopted a similarly tasteless phrase.

Welcome to the world of the “Jew punch”.

Subscription boxing channel BoxNation this week apologised and launched an investigation after a retired boxer made a rather dubious remark on one of its shows.

The channel cancelled repeats of the Bunce’s Boxing Hour show – hosted by respected boxing journalist Steve Bunce – following former cruiserweight Dominic Negus’s comment.

Mr Negus had been discussing his career on the November 21 edition of the show when he described his fighting style and said: “I’m very Jewish when I throw a punch”.

Mr Bunce made an on-air apology during a broadcast this past Monday.

But BoxNation chief executive Simon Green said he did not believe the remark had been intended as a “racist comment” and argued that it had instead been “misinterpreted”. He added the bizarre caveat that the on-air apology was “voluntary” and applied only to those who had made the misinterpretation.

Viewer Matthew Kane complained to BoxNation, saying the comment was made in the context of Mr Negus “being sparing with his right hand. If it was not meant to imply that Jewish people are mean, what was he saying?”.

Mr Kane rightly pointed out that if the comment was innocent, as Mr Green protested, then the channel would not have felt the need to apologise.

Defending BoxNation, Mr Green said: “Mr Negus is upset and sorry that his comment caused any offence. I understand that Mr Negus’s partner is a Jewish lady and his children attend a Jewish school.

“Although innocent in its intention, [the phrase] can also be misinterpreted and as such I apologise on behalf of Mr Negus and BoxNation.”

Make what you will of the inclusion of the line about Mr Negus’s partner being “a Jewish lady” with Jewish children. Some of his best friends may or may not be Jewish, but his missus is? That’s ok then.

I’m not the world’s biggest boxing fan, but my understanding is that references to a Jewish punching style are not common boxing parlance. I’ve yet to find anyone who had heard such phraseology before this occasion. Pushed to explain what exactly Mr Negus had meant – if he wasn’t referring to Jews being stingy – Mr Green offered no further answers.

Mr Negus, of Chingford, north east London, had a relatively short professional career, fighting 19 times, winning 13 – with six knockouts (not so sparing then) – and losing five times.

He also once appeared on “documentary series” Danny Dyer’s Deadliest Men, where he discussed his past exploits working with the East End’s criminal fraternity, and recalled how he head-butted Olympic champion Audley Harrison during a fight in 2002.

No doubt he is an interesting guy, but perhaps he should stick to letting his fists do the talking – and not by throwing “Jewish” punches.

BoxNation broadcasts on Sky to subscribers paying £10 a month. I’m not tight, but I think I’ll spend my money elsewhere.

Kevin Rudd challenges Julia Gillard for leadership of Australia

Former prime minister Kevin Rudd will contest the Australian Labor party leadership in a ballot on Monday

Australia's former prime minister, Kevin Rudd, will challenge Julia Gillard for the leadership of the Labor party and the country amid an increasingly bitter power struggle.

"Rightly or wrongly, Julia has lost the trust of the Australian people. That's why I've decided to contest the leadership," Rudd told a news conference in Brisbane.

Unless there was a change, he said, Labor would lose the next election, due in 2013. "All indications are that we are heading to the rocks," he said.

The leadership ballot will take place on Monday morning after Gillard called it in an attempt to settle the party's top job once and for all. Questions over her leadership have dogged her prime ministership since she removed Rudd from office in 2010 in an internal party coup. The centre-left Labor party scraped through elections later that year to lead a minority government in a hung parliament.

In a no-holes-barred press conference on Friday, Gillard accused Rudd of running a dysfunctional and chaotic government when he was prime minister. She added that over the past year he has been deliberately destabilising her government.

"What shouldn't happen in politics is you shouldn't be dragged down by someone who is on your own side," she said.

"When asked whether he had been involved in conversations undermining the Labor party and undermining the government, he refused to answer," she added.

Gillard also accused him of trying to turn the leadership battle into a personality contest.

"This is not an episode of Celebrity Big Brother, this is about who should be prime minister," she said.

She said as prime minster, she had achieved major reforms that had languished under Rudd, including putting a price on carbon, a tax on the mining and resources industry, a national broadband network and health reform. Ironically there are very few policy differences on these issues between the two candidates.

Current estimates put Gillard well ahead in the leadership contest, with about two thirds of the parliamentary Labor party thought to be backing her.

Rudd resigned as foreign minister during a trip to the US earlier this week, saying he could not continue in his role without the support of the prime minister.

On Friday he said if he did not win Monday's vote, he would return to the backbench and not challenge a second time. During his press conference he said wanted to continue the work he had done as prime minister.

"I want to finish the job the Australian people elected me to do when I was elected by them to become prime minister," he said.

"The government's problems as they have accumulated are of their own makings," he said, adding that during his time as prime minister, his opinion poll ratings only once fell below 50%. The current government's primary vote is languishing at around 30%.

Author and political analyst from Monash University, Nick Dyrenfurth, says Rudd's challenge is about vanity.

"He's consumed by anger at what happened in 2010 when he was toppled by his colleagues without any reference to the voters," he said.

Gillard supporters have continued to attack Rudd and some cabinet ministers have openly said they would not serve under him.

"I doubt I would be asked, but I wouldn't accept if I was," said attorney general, Nicola Roxon.

"I don't believe he will win on Monday. I don't believe I will be a member of his team if he did," said environment and sustainability minister, Tony Burke.

One Gillard supporter accused Rudd of using Tea Party tactics by appealing to the electorate to use their power in the leadership contest after he urged people to ring their local MPs and speak to the media.

Three ministers have come out in support of Rudd publicly. The now housing minister and former attorney general under Rudd, Robert McClelland, said people just needed to look at Kevin Rudd's standing in the polls to see who was best placed to win the next election.

"The reality is that we have been effectively flat-lining in support [under Gillard]" he said.

Analysts say whoever wins the vote on Monday, the Labor party is heading for electoral oblivion.

"The damage to brand Labor is cataclysmic," said political analyst Nick Dyrenfurth.

"What's unprecedented is the openness of the personal attacks and bloodletting," he said.

"It adds up to the Australian Labor party being wiped out for an entire generation."

The conservative opposition has called for a general election.

Waterman: Suspend Chisora

Robert Waterman believes that Dereck Chisora should be banned following his brawl with David Haye in Munich.

Waterman, the UK's leading Jewish boxing promoter, pointed the finger of blame at Haye, whom he once promoted, following the altercation that followed Chisora's defeat in the world title bout against Vitali Klitschko.

Waterman said: "The behaviour of both men was unacceptable. They've let themselves and British boxing down.

"There needs to be a full investigation by the British Boxing Board of Control, but I don't think it's in the interests of sport or society to give them life bans.

"I think Chisora should be suspended. David Haye is not a current licence holder, but if he were to reapply then the British Board of Boxing of Control should impose a penalty."

Waterman was impressed by Chisora's performance in the ring. He said: "Dereck gave a good account of himself. He gave it a good go, but the incidents surrounding the fight have tarnished him, British boxing and world boxing."

Paul Shamplina, who has trained at the same gym as Chisora in Finchley for five years, believes the incidents were out of character. "Dereck has always been cool, calm, courteous friendly and polite and trains hard," said Shamplina.

Waterman, who is the promoter for Eurosport International, has signed Israeli boxer Dan Aharonov, who was the world junior silver medallist and European silver medallist.

Dubai cheer for Shahar

Shahar Peer was given a wild card entry into the Dubai Championships three years after being excluded from the competition after the UAE refused her a visa.

Drawn against Fatma Al Nabhani (557) from Oman, the other wild card entry, in the opening round, the local media billed the game as Israel versus the Arab world. This forced the organisers to put out a statement which read: "It is only a tennis game, not a battle for Jerusalem or Tel Aviv."

Peer strolled past Al Nabhani 6-3, 6-1 in 61 minutes. The wild card was in acknowledgment that she reached the semi-finals two years ago and the quarter finals in 2011.

Peer has slipped to 40 in the WTA rankings although last week she showed impressive form in Doha, beating world no. 14 Jelena Jankovic of Serbia.

Cleveland State needs fast cure for losing

The downward spiral of Cleveland State' men's basketball team is at five straight games going into today's 7 p.m. matchup against Detroit in the Wolstein Center.

gary waters.JPGGary Waters' CSU Vikings (20-9, 10-6 Horizon League) are still in the hunt for the No. 2 seed in the Horizon League Tournament.

Suddenly, losing is becoming contagious.

The downward spiral of Cleveland State’s men’s basketball team is at five straight games going into today’s 7 p.m. matchup against Detroit in the Wolstein Center.

Even with the losses, coach Gary Waters’ Vikings (20-9, 10-6 Horizon League) are in the hunt for the No. 2 seed in the Horizon League Tournament, which starts Tuesday. To make that happen, the Vikings have to win against Detroit and Saturday against Wright State, and have Valparaiso win Friday at home against Butler (18-12, 11-6).

In the Mid-American Conference, Kent State’s upset loss at Miami on Tuesday night dropped the Golden Flashes (19-8, 9-4) out of a second-place tie in the East Division and into third place. The Flashes next play at fifth-place Bowling Green on Saturday.

First-place Akron (20-8, 12-1) is coming off a BracketBusters loss at Oral Roberts over the weekend.

I have rarely felt such a sense of disappointment in a Labour leader as I do today in Ed Miliband.
Repeatedly asked to condemn what you might think would be a no-brainer, MP Paul Flynn's scurrilous remarks about the British ambassador to Israel and his alleged "dual loyalty", Mr Miliband took refuge in weak silence. It was left to his shadow foreign secretary, Douglas Alexander, to do the deed and castigate Mr Flynn's comments.
In recent weeks Mr Miliband has let drop intriguing hints about releasing his inner Jew. He has had, we are told, deep conversations with himself about his Jewish identity following the birth of his second son. He has had long discussions with the Chief Rabbi, Lord Sacks, and the new Israeli ambassador to Britain, Daniel Taub (who, by Paul Flynn's bizarre logic, should also be guilty of dual loyalties since he is British-born.)
I can't imagine that such conversations, were they to take place this week, would be so comfortable for Mr Miliband.
All he has to do - in fact all he had to do - was to state clearly and unequivocally that Paul Flynn's remarks are completely and utterly unacceptable, no ifs, buts, or maybes. No hedging, no fudging, no ringing round with putting in context.
What Paul Flynn said was deeply offensive and completely bought in to every antisemitic trope and stereotype currently being peddled on what we have hitherto considered the lunatic fringe. But Flynn has now brought this attitude into respectable conversation. Mr Miliband needs to tread on this immediately; but I cannot understand why he hesitated. Unless, of course, he believes that his own background will lead to a loss of credibility, and he is allowing his Jewish identity to constrain him.
For shame, Ed. I thought you were better than that.

JC Goal of the week: February 19

**WINNER**: Anthony Kintish (Oakwood) - one of the goals of the season... a mazy run and a hit from 25 yards out which went in of the underside of the crossbar

Runner-up: Dan Perkins (Faithfold A) - hit a 30-yarder that swerved into the top corner, great goal

------------------------------------------------

NOMINEES

- Avidan Last (Hendon A) - Rafi Kon battled hard to win the ball down the right and put Avidan in down the channel. He skipped past the left back before cutting back inside a second defender and unleashing an unstoppable shot into the far corner of the net

- Jamie Fox (Chigwell Athletic) - great left-footed finish

- Will Beresford (LM Lions B) - a 30-yard free-kick which struck with precision and pace, curled into the top left hand corner. An effort Robin Van Persie would have been proud of

- Elliott Bloom (NW Neasden B) - a stunning 25-yard strike which flew into the back of the net

- Dave Powell (Catford & Bromley) - picked the ball up in midfield and advanced 20 yards before unleashing a powerful shot into the top right hand corner from 35 yards out

- Joel Berwitz (Catford & Bromley) - latched onto a loose ball on the last man before rifling in an unstoppable shot from just outside the area

- James Kleinman (Catford & Bromley) - from a quick passing move in the congested middle of the pitch, Rafi Marom spread the ball wide to Kleinman at right back who attached the space and sent a looping shot over the stranded Hendon keeper and in to the far corner of the net from fully 40 yards

- Yonni Bord (Catford & Bromley) - the most slick team passing move of the game saw Elliot Alexson and Ashley Stokes pull the Hendon defence all over the place before the ball found its way back to Rafi Marom, who waited for the perfect moment to slide a peach of a through ball to Yonni Bord who held off a challenge and slammed the ball in off the near post from just inside the area

- Dovid Greenberg (Los Blancos) - after collecting the ball on the right wing on the halfway line, Dovid easily beat the left-back for space. Seeing the keeper off his line, Dovid called 'top left' before firing in a shot from the edge of the box on the right byline in off the angle of the top left hand corner of the goal

- Josh Hershman (Brady Maccabi A) - sprinted on to a through ball and scored with a delicious and extravagant chip over David Fox from an acute angle

- Jake Gilbert (Athletic Bilbaum) - a sensational and audacious chip over the keeper from the corner of the 18-yard box

Health workers linked to CIA's Osama bin Laden assassination plot are sacked

Punishments handed out to 17 low-ranking health department employees for unwittingly helping CIA

Seventeen local health workers have been fired in Abbottabad for their part in a CIA scheme to try to confirm the presence of Osama bin Laden in the northern Pakistani town.

The low-ranking health department employees were punished for helping Dr Shakil Afridi, who was assigned by the CIA to set up a fake vaccination scheme in Abbottabad, ahead of the 3 May US military operation that found and killed the al-Qaida leader there.

In July last year, the Guardian revealed that Afridi was hired by the American spy agency, which was trying to establish whether Bin Laden was living inside a compound to which it had tracked an al-Qaida "courier".

Afridi used unwitting local health visitors to go house to house to vaccinate Abbottabad residents for hepatitis B, with the aim of getting inside the suspected Bin Laden home and extracting DNA from one of his children. The al-Qaida leader had habitually lived with many members of his large family even while on the run. The scheme, apparently unsuccessful, was run in the weeks before the 3 May raid.

The fate of Afridi, who was arrested by the Pakistan military's Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI) agency in late May last year, and remains in their custody, has added to a break-down in relations between Washington and Islamabad. American officials are pressing Pakistan to free Afridi, to allow him to travel to the US, where he would be resettled. However, he faces possible treason charges at home for working for a foreign intelligence agency.

The sacked health workers would have known nothing of the true purpose of the vaccination programme. They include all the 15 of the women health workers employed in Nawa Sher, the district of Abbottabad where Bin Laden had lived, plus two more senior health officials in the town. Among the fired employees is a nurse known as Bakhto, whose full name is Mukhtar Bibi. She is believed to have got inside the bin Laden compound with the vaccination programme.

Afridi was a senior health official posted in a part of the tribal area, far from Abbottabad, which was way outside his jurisdiction. He travelled to Abbottabad and used the health workers there without the knowledge of the senior Abbottabad administration.

Zafeer Ahmed, in charge of health services for Abbottabad, said that the 17 were dismissed for breaking the rules.

"There was negligence as these workers did not have permission from the provincial government or the health department to work with Shakil Afridi," said Ahmed. "I was ordered by the provincial government to take action against them."

A provincial government inquiry into the affair is on-going and higher ranking health officials could be disciplined in future.

No Pakistani official has been held responsible for failing to detect Bin Laden's presence in the country.

The sacked women health workers would be paid little but would probably have been dependent on government employment to make ends meet for their families.

The CIA scheme, as well as having grave consequences for Afridi, and now triggering the dismissal of health officials, has damaged vaccination programmes throughout Pakistan, including for polio, as it greatly added to wild rumours that the medicines are actually an American conspiracy to sterilise Pakistanis.

Afridi was earlier this month reportedly removed from his post, while his wife was separately dismissed from her government job, running a girls' college in the north west.

In January this year, the former CIA chief, Leon Panetta, now the US Defence Secretary, publicly called for Afridi's release, acknowledging his role for the first time in the hunt for Bin Laden. American officials believe that Afridi should be lauded for his services, not punished.

"I am very concerned about what the Pakistanis did with this individual [Afridi]. This was an individual who, in fact, helped provide intelligence that was very helpful with regard to this operation," Panetta had said.

Mitt Romney plans 20% tax cut in effort to revive faltering campaign

Former Massachusetts governor hopes proposals will give him edge over Santorum before contests in Michigan and Arizona

Mitt Romney has unveiled a plan to cut taxes by 20%, in an effort to shore up his bid for the Republican presidential nomination ahead of primaries in Michigan and Arizona next week and the Super Tuesday contests a week later.

Romney, under pressure from rival Rick Santorum, who is neck-and-neck in the polls with him Michigan and Arizona, unveiled the latest – and most generous – version of his tax plans just hours ahead of a televised debate between the four remaining candidates.

"I'm going to lower rates across the board for all Americans by 20%," he told a crowd of about 500 gathered in a gymnasium at a Christian academy in Chandler, near Phoenix, Arizona.

Romney's plan has the appeal of simplicity and it could help him win over not only conservative voters but independents at a general election. The prospect of tax cuts, particularly the idea of 20%, is a tantalising prospect as voters do their sums, regardless of how much progressives argue that tax cuts mean poorer services.

The plan is aimed at giving Romney a much-needed edge in a closely-fought campaign. Michigan is his home state and defeat at the hands of Santorum would raise serious doubts about his chances of becoming the Republican presidential nominee.

Voters in Michigan, Arizona and Super Tuesday states such as Ohio rate the economy and unemployment are the most important issues.

Romney, speaking in Chandler, argued tax cuts would help the economy grow. He suggested 20% cuts in each of six tax brackets: 10%, 15%, 25%, 28%, 33% and 35%. These would become 8%, 12%, 20%, 22.4%, 26.4% and 28%.

The former Massachusetts governor said his plan would be revenue neutral, by limiting deductions, particularly for the wealthiest. Among deductions he planned to limit are charitable contributions and relief on mortgage interest payments.

"With regards to our tax policy, our growth with regards to our tax policy, there are a couple things I'd like to announce to you today. And in order to limit any impact on the deficit – because I don't want to add to the deficit – and also in order to make sure that we continue to have progressivity as we've had in the past in our code, I'm going to limit the deductions and exemptions, particularly for high-income folks."

Romney first set out tax plans in September but these dealt mainly with corporate rather than individual taxes.

Conscious of his potrayal by rivals as super-rich, out of touch with ordinary Americans and failing to pay a full share of tax, Romney he wanted to "make sure the top 1% keeps paying the current share they're paying or more."

Romney's tax plans for individuals are less generous than those of his rivals. Santorum proposes two tax brackets, 28% and 10%, and Gingrich a flat rate tax of 15%.

The crowd in Chandler was smaller than Romney had hoped for. He failed to fill the gymnasium, making unnecessary a planned overspill room. He has had trouble attracting big crowds it should have been easier to attract supporters in Arizona, which has a big Mormon population.

In his speech, Romney dropped mention of Santorum, who he had been referencing recently. He also ditched references to "Washington insiders", code for Santorum and Gingrich, opting instead to stay positive and present his own policies.

The four remaining candidates – Romney, Santorum, Gingrich and Ron Paul – go into Wednesday night's CNN debate knowing a good performance could tip the balance in the upcoming nominating states.

The debate, in Mesa, Arizona, is the first n a month, a relatively long gap in what up until now had been a series of debates on an almost weekly basis. There have been more than 20 debates so far, depending on how they are counted. After Wednesday night's encounter, there is only one more scheduled, in Portland, Oregon, on March 19.

Santorum needs a good performance in the CNN debate to maintain the momentum he gained from his victories earlier this month in Colorado, Minnesota and Missouri. He has steadily improved as a debater since the autumn.

He can expect to be questioned about comments he made about theology and a reference to Satan. Such comments may harm him in a general election but do not necessarily go down badly with Republican audiences.

As its Arizona, questions are likely on illegal immigration but the main issue will be the economy, giving Romney as chance to highlight his tax proposals.

Romney, still favourite to take the nomination but only just, also needs a good showing in Michigan and Arizona, both states he should have been able to bank on but where polls show Santorum running neck-and-neck with him. Santorum has also established leads over him in national polls.

Romney has been a poor debater but turned in one strong performance in January which may have been good enough to stop Gingrich building momentum after his South Carolina victory.

Gingrich, who has faded since South Carolina, has a reputation as the best debater but has been subdued recently. He too needs a good debate to regain traction for the Super Tuesday contests that include his home state Georgia.

Ron Paul had been hoping for victory in the Maine caucuses but lost out to Romney. He is working on a long-term plan to accumulate as many delegates as possible to take to the party convention in Tampa, Florida, where he hopes to wrest some concessions, at the least a much-coveted television platform speech.

Tal Law on religious and IDF service 'unconstitutional'

Israel's Supreme Court has ruled against an extension to a law that allows strictly Orthodox Jews to defer or limit their army service.

The Tal Law, which came into effect ten years ago, was ruled unconstitutional. It had enabled Israel's full-time yeshivah students to continue their studies, and delay their national service until they were 23, at which point they could continue their studies or perform only a year of service. Israelis are conscripted into the army at the age of 18, with women usually obliged to serve two years and men three.

The law will expire in August, but the Supreme Court ruled that the system should be scrapped rather than renewed in its current form.

According to Ha'aretz there are about 62,000 yeshivah students who would now be eligible to begin their service this summer.

The outgoing High Court President Dorit Beinisch, whose successor criticised the ruling, said: "Originally the legislation harboured the hope that the law would launch a social process that without coercion would encourage ultra-Orthodox people to serve in the military or take part in national civil service. These hopes were dashed."

The Tal Law is one of many issues that highlight the divide between Israel's secular and religious. Many secular Israelis resent the fact that they cannot secure exemptions from army service in the way that religious men and women can.

The ruling could destabilise the coalition between Benjamin Netanyahu's Likud party and its Shas partners. But Shas spokesman Yakov Betzalel dismissed concerns and said he believed a new deal could be made.

Ehud Barak, now defence minister but prime minister at the time the law came into effect, acknowledged that the law "did not meet expectations, nor did it lead to the required changes ... concerning equally sharing the burden."

Iran cancels Serbia match because of Israeli manager Avram Grant

An Iranian football team has pulled out of a match with a Serbian club because the other side is coached by an Israeli.

Avram Grant, the former West Ham United manager, has been at Partizan Belgrad since last month.

The Serbian team is due to play Iran's Sepahan Isfahan on Friday, in a friendly match.

But the Iranians have told the Belgrade side that they will not take part any more.

In an explanation posted on the Partizan website, Mr Grant said that he had been told "unofficially" that the match had been cancelled because he was Israeli.

"I'm disappointed that the game was cancelled," he said. "They told me it was cancelled because I'm Israeli. I don't mix sports with politics and I'm not going to start now."

Rowan Atkinson: BBC should have been allowed to drop Miriam O'Reilly

Actor says former Countryfile presenter's successful ageism case was an 'attack on creative free expression'

The BBC should have been free to drop Miriam O'Reilly from Countryfile without attracting any accusations of age discrimination, according to comedian Rowan Atkinson, in a controversial intervention into the debate about the lack of older women on television.

The 57-year-old Blackadder, Mr Bean and Johnny English star said – in a letter to Radio 4's The Media Show – that O'Reilly's successful age discrimination case against the BBC amounted to an "attack on creative free expression" and that television was the wrong place to deal with anti-discrimination issues.

Atkinson wrote that he did not blame O'Reilly for taking legal action, but added that his argument "would be that the creative industries are completely inappropriate environments for anti-discrimination legislation and that the legal tools she used should never have been available to her".

In January 2011, O'Reilly won a landmark age discrimination case against the BBC after she was one of four women in their 40s or 50s who were dropped from a peaktime revamp of BBC1's Countryfile.

She never returned to the programme, but has since hosted a daytime spin-off of Crimewatch. O'Reilly quit the BBC in January, 12 months into a three-year BBC contract, to set up the Women's Equality Network with the lawyer who secured her tribunal victory, Camilla Palmer.

Atkinson said O'Reily's complaint was no more sensible than "Pierce Brosnan complaining that he was sacked from the role of James Bond for being too old" and that true creative freedom for both Bond films and Countryfile could only mean that producers should have complete artistic latitude.

"If either at the outset of a TV programme, or at any time during its screen life, you want to replace an old person with a young person, or a white person with a black person, or a disabled straight with an able-bodied gay, you should have as much creative freedom to do so as you have to change the colour of John Craven's anorak," Atkinson wrote.

O'Reilly, who was not invited to take part in the programme, told MediaGuardian: "I think very few people will agree with Mr Atkinson. At one time we didn't think black people should sit next to white people on a bus but fortunately we live in a fair and civilised society."

She added: "Television has an enormous influence on shaping society and how we see each other and we have got to have fair representation of everyone on TV. We can't leave it up to the whims of the so-called creatives.

"It was very unfortunate that I had to take legal action against the BBC for them to fairly represent women and older women. I would have liked them to have done so without me having to take action but it has already made a difference already. Mark Thompson has said it was a turning point in the representation of older women on screen."

Atkinson's intervention comes at a point when the BBC has finally admitted it has a problem with under representing older women on screen, after years of criticism.

Mark Thompson, the BBC director general, acknowledged earlier this month that the broadcaster does not have enough older female newsreaders and presenters.

Thompson said O'Reilly's age-discrimination tribunal win had been an important "wake-up call" for the BBC, adding that the corporation had a case to answer over the lack of older women in key news and current affairs presenting roles.

"First, that there is an underlying problem, that – whatever the individual success stories – there are manifestly too few older women broadcasting on the BBC, especially in iconic roles and on iconic topical programmes," he said.

"Second, that as the national broadcaster and one which is paid for by the public, the BBC is in a different class from everyone else, and that the public have every right to expect it to deliver to a higher standard of fairness and open-mindedness in its treatment both of its broadcasters and its audiences."

Thompson is due to meet with Nadine Dorries and other MPs on Monday, 27 February, to discuss the representation of women on and off screen.

The meeting was arranged by culture minister Ed Vaizey following a Commons debate on gender balance in broadcasting which was proposed by Dorries and supported by Lib Dem MP Tessa Munt.
