Seasonal outlook: Fair start to June - Good end to July, Apr 21 - 16:39

*June* The meteorological first month of summer, should see high pressure in control and some semblance of summery weather for all areas, these very warm and settled conditions should extend through the first week to ten days of the month. High pressure atop the UK at first should slowly drift westward with a cooler and showery regime then establishing into the middle of month, a noticeable temperature drop for all areas as a northerly flow develops. The middle of the month sees a more westerly orientated flow then establishing, low pressure potentially ramping up the breeze, rain and windier weather affecting all areas and feeling much cooler beneath the cloud and rainier spots. This unsettled weather looks as if it'll be continuing through the remainder of June, only at the close of the month does it potentially settle once more, temperatures recovering as pressure builds in from the west, southern and eastern areas seeing the best of the conditions. *July* High pressure remains tantalisingly close to the UK, but just too far to the west to settle the weather into what one would normally expect for high summer. Cool with a breeze from the north or northwest, showers mainly for all areas but some indication of destabilisation at times into rather more organised showery bands. The west seeing fewer showers closest to high pressure established to the west. Through to the middle of the month sees a reversal of fortunes with high pressure building across the UK and then to the settling to the east, a much warmer regime establishing across the bulk of the country as a southerly flow develops for a time. Then unfortunately it's all downhill low pressure to the west encroaching eastward, showers breaking out widely then more organised rain as the Atlantic influence kicks in once more. Showers or longer spells of rain for all for a time through to the final week of July when the pattern attempts to redeem itself but I have my doubts whether it'll really make it, 'indifferent' would be the best term? An Israeli yeshivah head’s view of Limmud

Rabbi Herzl Hefter, head of Harel Yeshiva in Israel reflects on his recent appearance at Limmud in his weekly email letter:

“Early Friday morning I returned home to Israel from the Limmud Conference in the UK. Jews of all backgrounds, secular, Orthodox, Masorti, Reform and Liberal attended. I say 'attended' and not 'were represented' because we were all there as individual Jews, representing only ourselves, united by a thirst for Torah and community. Limmud had managed to create a wonderful “safe space” where Jews could simply encounter one another as fellow Jews. Coming from Israel, the experience was inspiring, almost intoxicating.

So why am I depressed? Because I had to write “coming from Israel…” To what did I return home? I returned home to haredi violence in Beit Shemesh and a haredi boy dressed by his parents with a yellow Star of David. According to reports, his father said that the Nazi-Zionist government's persecution of the haredim is worse than what was carried out by the Nazi regime. What would my father, who witnessed his mother being taken to be shot, who alone survived of nine brothers and sisters and unknown number of nephews, nieces and cousins, what would he say?

Confrontation. I returned home to confrontation. Religiously speaking, I returned home to an abomination in the House of the Lord.

Arguably, there are more Jews studying Torah in Israel today than ever before in Jewish history. Has the society most devoted to Torah study become a light unto the nations or even unto our own nation? Do spiritual seekers, Jews and non-Jews, the world over flock to Bnei Brak and Mea She’arim in pursuit of holy, refined spiritual human beings reflecting the image of God? The vulgar expressions of the past weeks come from the most sheltered corners of haredi society; the most isolated from the modern world and its influences. The sicaricim are the “most pure”.

As Jews who hold tenaciously to the Torah and its teachings we must not shy away from the painful conclusion that for some, the Torah has become, in the language of our sages (Yoma 72b), sam ha mita, a deadly poison, and in our case a toxic environmental hazard.

In my mind, two things need to happen, one political and the other educational. We need to rethink and redefine the marriage of religion and state in Israel in a manner which preserves the Jewish character of the state while eliminating the morally numbing influence of political power on religious groups. Political power and fervent religious obscurantism are the father and mother of the noxious fruit which we must all now ingest.

Educationally, we need to dispel, once and for all, the notion that the more we shut out the world, the more "Torah true" we are. In fact the exact opposite is true.Absolute faith in the Torah obliges us to encounter, squarely and honestly, the ethical and theological challenges of the modern world. The authentic encounter (there is no other kind) is characterized by the consciousness that we may actually learn something new in the process. Open mindedness and humility are the two keys to shifting from confrontation to encounter; authentic encounter of ourselves, the other and ultimately, God.”

Government confirms U-turn on charity tax

George Osborne's reversal on removing tax breaks for donations is fifth policy climbdown in less than a week

George Osborne has announced his third U-turn over his budget this week by scrapping "charity tax" proposals that sought to remove tax breaks from wealthy donors to good causes.

The announcement by the Treasury at lunchtime on Thursday drew immediate criticism that the chancellor was attempting to draw attention away from damning evidence against senior ministers at the Leveson inquiry into press standards.

The Treasury said it would go ahead with a proposed cap on tax relief – which is to be set at 25% of income or £50,000, whichever is greater – but that it would no longer include donations to charity. The main component of the cap will now be the amount of previous business losses that can be offset against future taxable profits.

Officials said the decision was not a U-turn, but the conclusion of a consultation the government promised as soon as it announced the measure in the March budget.

Just two days ago, the Treasury insisted critics would have a chance to make their case in a formal consultation this summer, but it is believed that Osborne backed down after a vigorous campaign by charities. They warned that the moves would deter philanthropic giving and drive charities to the wall, undermining David Cameron's repeated exhortations to create a "big society".

The former prime minister Tony Blair made a rare foray into domestic politics to criticise the plans.

Osborne said: "It is clear from our conversations with charities that any kind of cap could damage donations and, as I said at the budget, that's not what we want at all. So we've listened.

"Frankly, at a time like this, the government is going to focus on the big issues like the worsening eurozone crisis and Britain's deficit, and not get distracted with unnecessary arguments."

Sir Stephen Bubb, the chief executive of the Association of Chief Executives of Voluntary Organisations, said: "This is good news for charities up and down the land. The chancellor has listened and done the right thing, and I applaud him for doing so."

Labour called the coalition's budget a shambles, noting that the charity tax climbdown follows U-turns over plans to impose VAT on pasties and static caravans.

Away from the budget, proposals to capture and remove buzzards – a protected bird of prey – to help pheasant shoots have been dropped, and controversial plans to expand secret courts have been scaled back.

Ed Balls, the shadow chancellor, said: "Another day, another budget tax U-turn – three successive U-turns in four days – all when parliament is not sitting and just a few weeks after ministers were defending these measures, show just what an embarrassing shambles George Osborne's budget has become."

Gareth Thomas, the shadow charities minister, said: "This decision has already done considerable damage and, taken alongside huge cuts in government funding and contracts like the Work Programme not delivering the money for charities that ministers once promised, has been responsible for the toughest year in a generation for Britain's charities and community groups."

Higher-rate taxpayers giving to a charity can reclaim more than half the income tax they have paid on the donation, irrespective of the sums involved. This means that wealthy businesspeople, especially those who have sold businessses and lived off the interest from investments, can reduce their tax bills by donating to their favourite charities.

The coalition argued that this was unfair and wanted to limit the ability to reclaim tax on donations of £50,000 a year, or a quarter of the individual's income, whichever is higher.

Sir Stuart Etherington, the chief executive of the National Council for Voluntary Organisations, said: "We are delighted that the chancellor has listened to reason and pledged to drop the charity tax. This is a victory for common sense and validates the strength of feeling from the thousands of organisations who lent their weight to the Give it Back George campaign. This is a great day for philanthropy."

Heather Self, director and tax specialist at the international law firm Pinsent Masons, said: "The government appears to have conceded that it was wrong to draw charities into a cat and mouse game of tax avoidance.

"This was a poorly thought-through proposal which would have harmed charities without being well targeted on abuse. We are glad that today's developments mean that those individuals who legitimately want to support charities will not be penalised for doing so."

Alana Lowe-Petraske, solicitor in the charities team at the international law firm Withers, said: "It remains to be seen if donors and charities trust this government on philanthropy issues after the unfortunate way the proposal was handled, but this is excellent news for the whole sector, from philanthropists to the smallest charities."

In a sign of the tensions in the coalition government about the original proposal, Lord Oakeshott, a former Lib Dem Treasury spokesman, said: "[This] is the right decision after a monumental unforced error. It was deeply offensive to donors and damaging to charities to imply that people could be better off personally by giving to charity."

The deputy prime minister and Liberal Democrat leader, Nick Clegg, said in April: "If you don't do something about these allowances, which allowed very wealthy rich people to avoid paying income tax altogether, you are effectively asking ordinary taxpayers to subsidise them."

Extraordinary

The Guardian's letters page and its adjunct Corrections column is a constant source of fascination. This week it excelled itself with a letter from Ben (I am not an antisemite) White, letters attacking the Globe Theatre for not withdrawing its invitation to Habima to perform in London, a correction for having traduced the JC over a BNP blog, and this little gem:
"The caption on a photograph featuring passengers on a tram in Jerusalem observing a two-minute silence for Yom Hashoah, a day of remembrance for the six million Jews who died in the Holocaust, wrongly referred to the city as the Israeli capital. The Guardian style guide states: 'Jerusalem is not the capital of Israel; Tel Aviv is.'"
Well. Where to start? With one hand the Guardian giveth, with the other it taketh away. It carefully cloaks itself in we-love-the-Jews-hood by running the Yom Hashoah photograph in the first place. Even the Guardian couldn't find anything snarky to say in the caption.
But wait! Yes, it had made a mistake according to the paper's style guide. It is the paper's style guide, you see, which carelessly runs roughshod across international norms of sovereignty and a country's right of self-determination. No matter that Israelis believe Jerusalem to be their capital; the Guardian style guide trumps that belief, as simply wrong.
No ifs, buts, qualifications; the Guardian knows best. Here is The Times on the same issue: "Jerusalem must not be used as a metonym or variant for Israel. It is not internationally recognised as the Israeli capital, and its status is one of the central controversies in the Middle East." That's a reasonable and sane approach.
Sad conclusion: the Guardian has lost the plot.

Spot the Israeli flags at the Champions League final? This lot did...

During Saturday night’s Champions League final some of you will, I expect, have noticed two Israeli flags displayed in the stands.

I spotted them in the first half – hanging at pitch level just near the halfway line – and then thought little more about it. Every now and again when they flashed across the screen they caught my eye, but they were really rather secondary to the remarkable match unfolding before my eyes.

But while I and more than 10 million other Brits were watching Chelsea win London’s first ever European Cup, others were busy enquiring as to why the flags were there.

The logical explanation was that a couple of fans (I think they were in among the Bayern fans rather than at the Chelsea end, although they could of course have been neutrals) were Israeli and had taken their flags along just as fans from other countries, not least England and Germany, had done.

But for the hate-ridden antisemites out there this was an opportunity not to be missed.

At the time I saw only one tweet about the flags – a reference from a moron in Preston of all places about the “Dirty Israel Flag!” he could see. I should have known it was only the tip of the iceberg.

Since Saturday I have seen blogs collating dozens and dozens of tweets going far further. Across the globe, supposed football fans were busying themselves with the foulest, most abusive posts they could dream up.

I’m not going to link directly to the offenders, but I’ll include their Twitter handles. Should you want to report them to Twitter, or even (for those tweeting in Britain) the police, then that is of course up to you.

At the lower end of the scale there was, from Sweden, the fairly basic:

@amenayounes: those israeli flags are effing disturbing

And from London:

@official_habib: kk those Israeli flags are starting to get annoying PUT THEM AWAY AND LET ME ENJOY THE MATCH no Zionism in football

“Official Habib” could of course have turned the TV off, but that didn’t seem to occur to him.

For others, such frustrations were insufficient to display their disgust at seeing a sovereign nation’s flag randomly displayed at a football match.

@ZSTehami: Israeli flags at the final. No. Just no. It's the equivalent of waving a piece of used toilet tissue with a ketchup stain on it.

“one boy vs zionism” tweeted to all six of his followers:

@1boyvsZionism: watching the #ChampionsLeague final today I wanted to puke everytime the camera panned across and those scumbags waved the israeli flags

In Sheffield, the connection between the final taking place in Germany and “the Jews” quickly came to the fore:

@ToastAndBanana: Hardly surprising there's Israeli flags either. The Jews blackmail Germany cos of what they did and will do it for ages.

There are plenty more I could reproduce, but I’m sure you get the hang of it.

Even for those not moved to go as far as Holocaust revisionism and outright antisemitism, the curiosity was too much to bear.

@dadmob: Can somebody explain the Israeli flags in the crowd at the Champions League Final?

@McCarthyMor: What's with the Israeli flags on the half way line? Strange.

@MabzE7: Why are there people waving Israeli flags?

Others questioned whether the fans had been despatched by Israel on a PR mission, or whether they were there simply to mock the Germans, or even whether they had mistaken the game for this weekend’s Eurovision Song Contest.

Sports fans are no strangers to comedy, singalongs and, dare I say it, banter. Terraces around the world are littered with examples of cheeky good humour. But what we see here is something else.

The range of tweets may have opened with moronic and amusing, but moved on to dangerous, incendiary, and through to plainly racist.

The current trend for Twitter to act as an accelerant, stirring up hatred of all degrees, is a serious worry. Since I wrote in the JC in January about the dangers of the social networking site, there have been a number of serious cases of hatred, threats and offence, with a student jailed for his racist tweet about footballer Fabrice Muamba, and another internet “troll” awaiting sentence for threatening MP Louise Mensch’s children.

Let us be clear – the people who posted messages about the flags are not interested in discussion or debate, they are not interested in politics or arguments over the future of settlements or claims of apartheid. They are driven by hate. Plain and simple.

They see a flag at a football match and immediately their minds turn to “evil Jews” and their desire to rid the world of them.

The majority of these people each have only a handful of followers, thankfully. They are tweeting to their friends, but in a place where they intend, ultimately, for the world to see. Alone they pose no danger. They are what was once the green-ink brigade. Deluded and desperate.

But on Saturday night there were dozens of them spreading their poison. If they picked a quieter time on Twitter – not during a major football match being watched by hundreds of millions of people – and added a hashtag, then what? How long before we see #deathtoIsrael as a top trending topic? Will Twitter finally act when #killthejews spreads across Britain?

We are on a dangerous, slippery slope. The high-profile convictions I mentioned earlier may act as a sufficient warning to many people, but what about those so ridden with hatred that all rational thought escapes them?

I fear one day soon we may just find out.

'The pace did not relax and as we came within the final 5km disaster struck'

By Patrick Clarke

Ras 2012: stage 7

Donegal - Cootehill, 161km

This will be a short diary as I am very tired after the 160km haul that I had to conquer today.

The field left Donegal at high speed and powered down the main road toward Bundoran which was our second visit to the town in the Rás this year.

From here we travelled south-east, pushing hard along the narrow rolling roads.

I was on edge as six riders had ridden clear, one of which was only a minute behind me on the county rider classification.

As the kilometres ticked by, I dug hard to keep at the front as we edged in and out of cross winds and up and down challenging hills.

I had to work hard on ensuring that I kept the food going into me with an endless stream of bars, gels and energy products sponsored by Molloys Lifestyle Pharmacy ensured I was always topped up.

The category two climb of the day at 100km was steady as the Swiss pro team set a comfortable tempo controlling the leeway that the break had out front.

It was not until one of the GC contenders David Mc Cann attacked that things kicked into gear.

Knowing the yellow jersey was in jeopardy, the Swiss pursued hard closing on both him and the break until both had been caught.

But the pace did not relax and as we came within the final 5km disaster struck as my team mate Chris Coyle came a cropper when he crashed.

I luckily avoided disaster and pressed on, coming in safely in the middle bunch.

Tommorow is the final stage and with it comes the black hills of Skerries.

I'm confident I can do well!

Steve Karsay, Scott Erickson hired as minor league pitching coaches by Cleveland Indians

The Indians have just about completed their minor league player development staff for the 2012 season..

Steve KarsaySteve Karsay pitched for the Indians from 1998-2001.

CLEVELAND, Ohio -- There is a big-league flavor to the Indians minor league coaching staff.

Former big leaguers Steve Karsay and Scott Erickson have been hired as pitching coaches. Karsay, who pitched 11 seasons in the big leagues, will coach the Indians' Arizona Rookie League pitchers. Erickson will coach at Class A Carolina.

Karsay pitched with the Indians from 1998 through 2001. Erickson went 142-136 in 15 big-league seasons. He won 20 games for the world champion Twins in 1991. It will be Karsay and Erickson's first professional coaching jobs.

Francisco Cabrera is the new hitting coach for the Tribe's Dominican Summer League team. It was Cabrera's two-run pinch-hit single that won Game 7 of the 1992 NLCS for Atlanta against Pittsburgh.

The new field coordinator will be Rob Leary, who spent the last nine years working with the Red Sox. He replaces Tom Wiedenbauer, promoted to first base coach on Manny Acta's big league staff.

Mickey Callaway is the new pitching coordinator. He replaces Dave Miller, who was promoted to Acta's staff as bullpen coach. Callaway was the pitching coach at Class A Kinston last year.

Here are the other coordinators: Alan Zinter, hitting; Travis Fryman, infield; James Quinlan, rehab; Jake Beiting, strength and conditioning. The Indians still need to hire a base running/outfield coordinator to replace Gary Thurman, who was hired by the Marlins to be on Ozzie Guillen's staff.

The Latin America staff stays the same with Nelson Perez, strength and conditioning, Julio Rangel, mental skills coordinator and Lino Diaz, cultural development coordinator. Johnny Goryl, Ken Rowe and Minnie Mendoza remain as advisors.

As for changes in minor league managers, Dave Wallace moves from short-season Class A Mahoning Valley to Class A Lake County. Ted Kubiak, who managed Lake County last season, will take over Mahoning Valley.

Edwin Rodriguez, as previously announced, will manage Class A Carolina. Rodriguez managed the Marlins last year before getting fired.

Here is a quick look at the coaching staffs:

Class AAA Columbus: Mike Sarbaugh, manager, Phil Clark, hitting; Ruben Niebla, pitching, Michael Salazar, athletic trainer.

Class AA Akron: Chris Tremie, manager, Rouglas Odor, hitting, Tony Arnold, pitching, Chad Wolfe, athletic trainer.

Class A Carolina: Edwin Rodriguez, manager, Scott Erickson, pitching, Jeremy Heller, athletic trainer. Hitting coach has yet to be hired.

Class A Lake County: Dave Wallace, manager, Jim Rickon, hitting, Jeff Harris, pitching, Bobby Ruiz, athletic trainer.

Class A Mahoning Valley: Ted Kubiak, manager, Tony Mansolino, hitting, Greg Hibbard, pitching, Matt Beauregard, athletic trainer.

Rookie League Arizona Indians: Anthony Medrano, manager, Steve Karsay, pitching, Junior Betances, hitting, Dennis Malave, coach, Ted Blackwell, athletic trainer.

Rookie Dominican Summer League Indians: Max Diaz, manager; Mario Brito, pitching, Francisco Cabrera, hitting, Carlos Fermin, coach, Miguel Ledesma, athletic trainer.
