The joys of heading to the Rugby World Cup

STAMINA, determination, patience and good preparation. And that's just about getting to New Zealand, never mind what's needed to win a Rugby World Cup. The Irish squad were due to arrive in Queenstown in the early hours of Thursday morning, Irish time, completing a marathon 35-hour trip from Dublin that required stops in Heathrow, Dubai and Sydney.

Your humble correspondent was ahead of the posse, however, leaving Irish shores on Sunday evening and arriving in New Zealand on Tuesday afternoon, local time, to prepare diligently for the squad's touchdown in Queenstown.

And it actually took a couple of hours and one less flight that Declan Kidney and his players needed, even if we did skip Monday, August 29. Still, 33 hours, it's some test of the aforementioned virtues and not helped by the journey beginning with a snotty check-in lady at Dublin Airport whose relish for penal luggage allowances left this passenger and his travelling companions with a sour taste in the mouth and a sense of foreboding before we had even boarded a plane, let alone heard: “Cabin crew, doors to automatic, cross check”.

So, how to fill so long a period of time whilst encased in a pressurised metal tube?

Let's do it by the numbers....
Flight one: Dublin to Abu Dhabi.
Miles: 3684; Travel time: 7 hours 30 minutes.

Justin Germano fires perfect game as Columbus tops Syracuse: Minor-league report

Akron can't overcome early deficit vs. Trenton; Kinston's Brach struggles in loss; Crushers lose in 11 innings.

germano-mug-tribe-second.jpgView full sizeJustin Germano pitched just the fifth perfect game in International League history, and the first ever for the Clippers.

AAA Columbus Clippers

Clippers 3, Chiefs 0: Justin Germano (1-2) pitched a perfect game for Columbus, as the Clippers won at Syracuse, N.Y., in an International League game. Germano, a 6-2 right-hander, struck out seven in facing the minimum of 27 batters. He threw 95 pitches, and 69 were strikes.

In the bottom of the ninth, Germano retired Jhonatan Solano on a fly ball to center fielder Tim Fedroff, and then Jeff Frazier on a fly ball to left fielder Jerad Head. He finished with a flourish, fanning Corey Brown looking.

Fedroff slugged a double and triple and drove in two runs.

Notes: Germano, 28, pitched the first perfect game in Clippers history and the first thrown in the International League since 2003. It is the sixth no-hitter in Clippers history. Germano's ERA is 3.65 in 441/3 innings.

He has been used as a starter and reliever, and Tuesday's gem was his first complete game of the season. He has three saves. A native of Pasadena, Calif., he signed a minor-league contract with the Indians on March 24, 2010. He has appeared with the Indians this season in relief, compiling an 0-1 record in nine appearances, with a 5.68 ERA in 12 innings.

Housekeeper arrested for kidnapping rabbi's baby daughter

Police have arrested a former housekeeper who lost her job and then allegedly abducted the baby daughter of her former employers, an Orthodox Jewish couple.

Gloria Suraez had worked for the Hayempour family for six weeks but when the summer job came to an end she concocted a plot to kidnap five-month-old Esther and take her to Uruguay.

She apparently purchased baby supplies, food and clothes as part of her elaborate plot.

She is alleged to have kidnapped the baby under the guise of saying goodbye to the family, but after the terrified family alerted the authorities she was detained at the train station.

Ms Suarez, 55, told Long Island police that she believed the baby should belong to her because she could offer more love and attention.

She has been charged with second degree kidnapping and resisting arrest.

BECC keep alive promotion hopes

Belmont & Edgware 1st maintained promotion hopes with a nail-biting seven-run victory over Haryom in the Middlesex Sunday League Division Two.

After losing the toss, BECC openers Goodman and Abrahams started positively, with the pair finding some early form and accelerating the score to 30 until Abrahams fell to the opening bowler.

Jonny Feigenbaum joined Goodman and continued to press on but both soon fell victim to Haryom's impressive young opener.

With the score at 38-3 and the wicket playing like a minefield, Evans and Taylor attempted to steady the innings and restore the solid batting seen early on.

However, Evans was caught shortly after, with Addlestone departing quickly as well. This brought captain Warren Averbuch to the crease with the score at a precarious 55-5 after 13 overs with Averbuch questioning how the batting line-up had found themselves in a similar position for the second week running.

Together with Taylor, Averbuch started to lay the foundations for a long lasting partnership, until Taylor was run out thanks to an excellent piece of fielding and a direct hit.

Richie Wienburg joined Averbuch and they combined well to hit some glorious boundaries as well as a few quick singles in order to keep the scoreboard ticking. They added 54 runs and moved the score on to 117-6 before Averbuch was bowled for 15.

Wienberg fell soon after for an excellent and well deserved 28 and was replaced by Nick McLeod. McLeod and Jacobs battled well, with the pair pushing the score on to 148.

BECC recovered well after the early collapse, setting Haryom a target which still looked competitive on a very slow wicket at Parmiters.

After tea, BECC set about defending the set target. After a long discussion with Jonny Evans in relation to the pace of the pitch, Averbuch decided to open the bowling with Goodman (8-0-28-1) and Neil Myeroff (8-1-20-4). The decision paid dividends with Myeroff picking up two wickets in his first over.

With the opposition at 8-2, the pair pressed on and continued to mount pressure upon the new batsmen. Haryom steadied their innings until Goodman removed the remaining opener. Myeroff was replaced by Weinberg (8-2-18-0), while Goodman bowled the remainder of his spell and was replaced by Averbuch (8-0-27-1).

Haryom, who have already secured promotion, pressed on with their captain leading the charge with a solid middle order partnership. They had moved on to 78-3 until Averbuch struck to remove their captain and break the partnership.

Haryom were now on the back foot and BECC were now even hungrier for victory. Averbuch and Wienburg were replaced by Evans (6.5-0-32-3) and Taylor (2-0-15-0).

With rain only moments away, and the ground being lit up like the Oval during a day night fixture, Evans struck, removing one of Haryom's danger men.

The atmosphere was tense, with Haryom requiring 32 runs from five overs with four wickets remaining. Averbuch once again called upon his ever reliable attack option (Like Ponting to Warne)... the experienced and ever reliable Myeroff, to inject venom into the attack. And did he disappoint? Definitely not.

Myeroff broke the partnership that had been developing and soon after picked up the incoming batman?s wicket, knocking back his middle stump. Myeroff had changed the game again with Haryom now requiring 14 runs off the last over for victory.

The ball was handed to Evans to finish off the job, with the Averbuch reminding the young maestro to bowl the same line and length and to cut out the slow balls as Evans had previously suggested.

With only two men inside the circle, a quick two was followed by another quick two and then another, resulting in Haryom needing eight off the remaining three balls. Evans once more sprinted in with Haryom's remaining players lining the floodlit pavilion. A well pitched up ball hit the batsman full and straight on his pads, with Evans erupting with an appeal that would be rivalled only by a lion roaring in the African Savannah. To the delight of the team, the umpire raised his finger, and BECC were one step closer to securing victory.

With one wicket remaining and Haryom requiring 8 runs off two balls, Evans steamed in hopefully for the last time. Evans released a stunning yorker delivery which resulted in the middle stump being knocked back. Haryom had been bowled out for 141 in 39.4 overs.

BECC had won the game by 7 runs and recorded their fourth consecutive victory in the league.

Captain Warren Averbuch said: "This was a spirited and well fought victory where all players gave 110 per cent. Special contributions from Evans, Myeroff and Wienburg.

Ohio State honors Jim Tressel with tribute wall in football facility

The wall went up 13 days after Ohio State and Tressel appeared before the NCAA Committee on Infractions. Watch video

SANY0026.JPGThe Jim Tressel tribute wall at the Ohio State football facility.

COLUMBUS, Ohio - One of the most complicated breakups in sports added another layer last week.

Ohio State continues to simultaneously isolate and embrace Jim Tressel.

Last Thursday, Ohio State finished a wall mural honoring Tressel inside the Woody Hayes Athletic Center. The wall is in the main hallway of the OSU football facility, where other wall designs honoring Woody Hayes, listing the Big Ten teams, recognizing OSU All-Americans, etc., are prevalent.

In a lot of ways, the Tressel wall fits. He's a major, successful part of Ohio State's football history.

But he's also a major part of Ohio State's messy present. With the NCAA more than a month away from ruling on Ohio State's NCAA case, already honoring the coach at the heart of those violations is interesting.

Ohio State's basic case to the NCAA is that the responsibility for the violations committed within the football program lies with Tressel. Ohio State made the point to the NCAA that it forced out Tressel, and it views that resignation as one of the main penalties already suffered by the school. When Ohio State appeared before the NCAA in Indianapolis, the OSU crew went into the meeting room as a group, and Tressel went in by himself, accompanied only by his two lawyers.

Yet 13 days after Ohio State's NCAA hearing before the Committee on Infractions, the Tressel wall went up.

It's not hard to imagine Ohio State honoring the Tressel legacy. The guy won seven Big Ten titles, one national championship and went 9-1 against Michigan. That can't be ignored.

But to put a tribute like that up before the first play without Tressel at the helm takes place? Fascinating. And that wall reflects how the past must be remembered by the Buckeyes. The record listed for Tressel is 8-1 against Michigan. The Big Ten titles won are six. The overall record with the Buckeyes is 94-21. Because everything that happened in 2010, including Tressel's 100th win at Ohio State, can't be recognized.

The 2010 season was vacated. The wall mural of Big Ten championships down the hall from the Tressel wall doesn't include 2010. The reason that season was vacated is the same reason Tressel isn't still walking down that hallway in the flesh.

So instead, he's on a wall.

What's your take? Do you like the wall? Not like it? Like it but think it's too soon?

Football's fate could rest with rulemakers

THE new playing rules committee is expected to meet over the next few weeks.

Featuring Jarlath Burns (Armagh Central Council delegate), Gerry Hickey (Clare’s delegate), GPA representatives Dessie Farrell (chief executive), Dónal Óg Cusack (chairman), Kilkenny manager Brian Cody and Kildare boss Kieran McGeeney, their recommendations will be put to Central Council and, if successful, will be brought in for the leagues on an experimental basis.

GAA trustee Con Hogan, who explained the motion paving the way for the committee at this year’s Congress, has already qualified the move by saying the committee operate under a "tightly controlled system" and there won’t be a spate of motions in front of delegates every year.

However, the square ball rule is all but certain to be altered after much outcry this season while McGeeney will undoubtedly raise the issue of the tackle – something he previously did at this year’s pre-championship managers’ meeting with Croke Park officials.

Then again, Cody, who has regularly spoken about the merits of hurling as it current exists, could challenge any proposal to alter the rules of the game.

But after last Sunday’s dour All-Ireland SFC semi-final between Dublin and Donegal, the committee will come under the spotlight to look at matters concerning Gaelic football.

Here we assess five potential changes arising from that forgettable match:

Limit of four hand passes
His son Mark may have been on the team but that didn’t stop Martin McHugh criticising Donegal’s style of football radio yesterday.
“You wouldn’t like to see other teams copying it, teams that haven’t got a chance saying ‘let’s do this’.
“Donegal were a kick of a ball away from winning an All-Ireland and club teams could start doing it.
“At that stage, maybe the GAA would have to take in a rule looking at four players having to be in the opposition’s half or something like that. The referees have to take a look at the second man coming in to tackle a player and that’s a foul.”
McHugh’s suggestion, while interesting, is so fundamental it’s unlikely to be followed up immediately after just one game but we’ll remember where we heard it first.

Team-fouls rules for offences committed out the field
In today’s Irish Examiner, Burns is adamant the GAA have to do something about stopping teams gain advantages from fouling. "If every forward is allowed to give away two fouls before being yellow-carded that's 12 or more fouls that really go unpunished,” pointed out Armagh’s 1999 Ulster winning captain. "We need to be considering something like giving a 45 to a team if the opposition's forwards have fouled three times."
Another interesting proposal but one that needs more meat on the bone and Burns will hope to tease out a bit more in committee meetings. Any measure aimed at stamping out cynicism in Gaelic football has to be supported.

Bring in a clock/hooter system
As pointed out by Kieran Shannon in the Irish Examiner today, referee Maurice Deegan should have allowed a lot more time than the three minutes of additional time at the end of the second-half. Given the constant hold-ups and time-wasting on Donegal’s part, there should have been at least another two minutes of play.
Taking time-keeping out of the referee’s hands is something that has to be considered more as the game becomes harder and harder to officiate. It just makes sense. Wexford’s motion to introduce a hooter to matches was successful last year but was later ruled out as being cost prohibitive. But as the more expensive Hawk-Eye is set to be used in Croke Park on a pilot basis over the next two years, a similar initiative for the hooter/clock wouldn’t go astray.

Final whistle at the end of each half blown when ball is dead
A more cost-effective solution to the problem of referees not providing the adequate amount of additional time.
The full-time whistle would only come after the expiration of added time when the ball next crosses any boundary line. Yet a motion pertaining to this was introduced in last year’s Allianz Leagues and it was defeated at Congress in Newcastle where there were 122 other proposals up for decision. Yes, it borrows from rugby but it would help to reduce the criticism on referees and added an added dimension of fairness.

The mark (from kick-outs)
Mentioned by Burns, it still has a lot of support but what is aimed at enshrining one of the great arts in Gaelic football actually militates against it. High-fielding is dying, there’s no doubt about that, but the mark is no reward for it when teams will happily allow opponents to fetch the ball only to stand in front of them when they return to the ground. Such prohibitive tactics are logical given they allow more players to get back in defence.

The Monday parade of winners and losers

A seismic shift in the Premier League powerbase as both Manchester clubs inflict humiliating defeats upon two North London giants on Sunday. The Villas-Boas experiment stuttered through another awkward test at Stamford Bridge but the widest smile of a fascinating weekend belonged to the King of Anfield as the good times returned to Liverpool.

WINNERS
Kenny Dalglish
THE LEGEND’S enthusiasm for Liverpool remains as abundant as ever if the broad smile and enthusiastic hand-clapping are anything to go by following Liverpool's 3-1 win at home to Bolton. Dalglish's re-appointment was derided by many as the former Anfield player-manager had been out of the game for so long until the arrivals of Luis Suarez, Stewart Downing and Charlie Adam gave Liverpool back their mojo.
The Scot is as self-deprecating as ever in after-match interviews but Liverpool's re-emergence as a possible Champions League qualifier is down to the manager purchasing quality players and settling on a balanced side (Arsenal take note).

Tony Fernandes
THE NEW QPR owner and Force India Formula One supremo endeared himself to his new supporters by sanctioning an immediate decrease in ticket prices at Loftus Road. Signing Joey Barton with 48 hours of taking over was another clear demonstration that Fernandes - unlike the previous incumbents - is putting his money where his mouth is in an effort to establish the London club in the Premier League.

Manchester United
UNITED'S substitutes bench in the Sunday massacre of Arsenal included Anders Lindegaard, Rio Ferdinand, Fabio da Silva, Ryan Giggs, Ji-Sung Park, Dimitar Berbatov and Javier Hernandez. Missing through injury were Michael Carrick, Michael Owen and Nemandja Vidic.
Any team with title aspirations look to the strength of their bench as an indicator of potential success. Based on that theory Manchester United are odds on to retain their title.

Juan Mata
RARELY does a scoring debutant fail to make the headlines but that is what happened to Juan Mata at Stamford Bridge. The former Valencia winger's debut for Chelsea in a 3-1 win over Norwich was overshadowed by a Didier Drogba concussion which left the Ivorian in hospital overnight. Mata's cameo which culminated in the diminutive winger scoring a delightful left-footed goal bodes well for a stuttering Chelsea side.

Edin Dzeko
FOUR goals from Edin Dzeko in Manchester City's 5-1 demolition of Tottenham on Sunday solidified the former Wolfsburg striker's place in Roberto Mancini's star-studded first team squad. Seven goals in four appearances marks the Bosnian international down as one of the hottest strikers in the Premier League right now and underlines many pundits view that Manchester City are serious title contenders.

The BBC
WHAT a weekend to get Alex Ferguson to lift his ban on speaking to the BBC as the home of the ageless Match of the Day programme got to hear Ferguson's dulcet tones on Sunday evening following United's historic 8-2 victory. Ferguson looked to be biting on a nettle as he answered the BBC's reporter's inane questions but managed to get in a “the media today is so cut-throat now and hard to understand at times” comment before walking off.

LOSERS
The average football fan
AS Sky Sports celebrate 20 years of broadcasting the Premier League worldwide a word for the average football fan that is being slowly being priced out of attending matches.
Birmingham City were relegated from the top tier last season yet saw fit to charge visiting Manchester United fans £54 to attend an away fixture at St. Andrews. A large amount of money in anyone's eyes but made even more incredulous when you consider Birmingham charged Wigan Athletic supporters a mere £18 the following week for the privilege of sitting in the same away end?
Few if any Premier League clubs offer family or student concessions resulting in a generation of potential fans now being lost to the game. Talks of a 39th fixture on foreign soil look a more likely prospect than clubs bothering to address their local fans needs.

The Arsenal Board of Directors
FORMER Arsenal Director Lady Nina Bracewell-Smith was seemingly forced out of her role by having to sell her 15.9% shareholding to Stan Kroenke last April. “If the role of a board member is to oversee a trophy less period, while making significant personal profits and asking fans to pay inflation-busting ticket price increases then, no, I would not want to be on the board” was Bracewell-Smith's parting shot.
Success that had been previously taken for granted at Highbury and the Emirates Stadium has dried up since Bracewell-Smith and most notably David Dein's decision to vacate the Arsenal boardroom.
Off-field difficulties in attracting top talent to the Emirates Stadium due to a reluctance to splash the cash is now matched by a chronic lack of confidence throughout the club culminating in Sunday's humiliation at Old Trafford.
Arsenal's transfer attempts in the past six months underline the current malaise within the club's boardroom at bringing in much needed talent. Failing to purchase Mark Schwarzer from Fulham, allowing Luis Enrique to move to Liverpool, offering a paltry sum for Phil Jones who leaped into Sir Alex Ferguson's arms and now angering Bolton Wanderers with a derisory offer for Gary Cahill?

Arsene Wenger
DIFFICULT as it is to criticise a manager who has revolutionised Arsenal, Arsene Wenger is overseeing the worst run (six Premier League games without a win) of form since taking over. Even ignoring the obvious tactical flaws employed during the 8-2 embarrassment at Old Trafford, Wenger's recent transfer activity has weakened rather than strengthen his club.
The transfer window closes in three days yet amazingly Wenger was still non-committal on the prospect of any new signings after their 8-2 loss. Another trophy-less season may prove too much for the Arsenal board and supporters if their stubborn manager insists on ploughing ahead with his current squad.

Steady as you go!

It is depressing how all the evidence is building for a summer, autumn and winter of discontent and we, the everyday victims, have little choice but, Canute-like, to sit there at the edge of the threatening ocean of strikes and allow them to wash over us. If you are as old as I am, you will have been here before and you will know that, at some point, strikers and their intended target, government, will have to sit down and thrash out some sort of compromise which will require both to give a little. I ask now, as I have asked over many years before, why does it have to get to this point before intelligent leaders on both sides sit down and thrash out the solution which is going to be the end point of this tragic game? Why the need for self-inflicted suffering when there is so much unavoidable sacrifice ahead for all of us?

The mystery of Nick Robinson?s glasses

At the Holocaust Education Trust's Student Ambassadors event last night (more on that in this week's paper), the BBC's Nick Robinson cleared up one of the biggest political mysteries of the week.

No, not phonehacking. I'm referring, of course, to what happened to his signature spectacles.

He revealed to the crowd that he had not, in fact, chosen a new pair. "I'm not that bold," he said. "It was simply that I smashed them and I couldn't find my spare pair at home."

He said he was planning to get the glasses fixed "but then Rupert Murdoch shut News of the World. And I've been humiliated ever since."

I'm sure we can all rest easier now.

The Times and Amy Winehouse's Jewish funeral

Following Monday's moan about the Mirror and its not-entirely-accurate report about Amy Winehouse's funeral, here's another.

The Times today dedicated the majority of a double-page spread to the "celebration of an 'angel' played out in public glare".

The reporters noted: "The day began with an Orthodox Jewish funeral service in a synagogue in Edgware: Winehouse, despite her feistiness and rebellion, was always a woman who recognised tradition."

Um. Right. Except it didn't. And I don't remember such devotion to tradition when she married Blake, either.

I noticed the ? how shall we call it? error? ? this morning, although I've seen plenty of people tweeting about it. I'll leave it to Rabbi David Mitchell, of Radlett & Bushey Reform Synagogue:

"Poor article in Times "the day began with Orthodox Jewish funeral service in a synagogue in Edgware" - it was a Liberal service at cemetery!"

Indeed.

Meanwhile, the Mirror removed the earlier comment about how tattooed Jews could be required to "cut" their markings off for a Jewish burial. Well done to them for taking action. In a cute note of caution, they offered readers a helpful how-to guide to Jewish mourning.

My favourite bit was this: "One of the oldest traditions after the funeral is that the community provide the first meal which is traditionally eggs or bagels to symbolise the continuity of life."

Eggs, certainly. But given the modern incarnation of the bagel is widely understood to have originated in melting-pot New York in the 19th century, I'm pretty sure there's no biblical precedent for the post-funeral bagel (Correct me if I'm wrong).

Still, bagels do feature at pretty much every Jewish occasion ? a shiva is no exception ? so points for trying.

Postscript: Twitter has been abuzz with people suggesting that cremation is not allowed in Judaism. That's true ? but also not. Read more about that debate here.

Fury over construction on site of cemetery

Strictly Orthodox leaders have pledged to organise mass protests against plans by Queen Mary, University of London, to build on the site of a Jewish cemetery in Mile End Road, east London.

The Committee for the Preservation of Jewish Cemeteries in Europe is leading the campaign against the development of the Novo Sephardic cemetery, which now belongs to the university. Planning permission has been approved and construction has started.

Thirty years ago, the land was sold to the college by the Spanish and Portuguese Jews' Congregation on a 999-year lease. The sale involved exhuming thousands of graves and moving the remains to a site in Brentwood, Essex, prompting fierce protests from strictly Orthodox community. A quarter of the graves were left undisturbed in the college grounds.

The latest development is to allow the widening of the path from Mile End Road to the campus and creating a "space for silent contemplation" by the law and humanities buildings. The preservation group believes the work will affect burial sites. The Sephardi organisation disagrees and its Rabbi Eiran Davies is supervising the scheme.

QMUL director of estates Simon Neal said: "The cemetery has been quite neglected - it was effectively a piece of wasteland." He maintained the plans would improve the site, and the contemplation area would include information about the cemetery and the East End Jewish community.

"We know mistakes were made in the '70s and both us and the SPJC are trying to put them right. We have worked very closely with them."

However, the preservation group's executive director, Rabbi Abraham Ginsburg, said community concerns had been not been answered and claimed Queen Mary principal Simon Gaskell had refused to meet representatives.

"It is disgraceful that the cemetery was ever sold for financial gain in the first place. We have evidence that there are more than 100 children's graves on the site.

"We know we do not have much power to change the plans. But it is a total violation of Jewish law. We cannot just turn a blind eye. I have dealt with cases of Jewish cemeteries in Eastern Europe and have had more problems getting to speak to the owners here in London than I do over there. It's totally unacceptable and disrespectful."

Mass protests would be organised when the academic year starts. "There are many Jewish students at the university. We must get them on board."

In search of the golden fleece

Stretching from The Black Sea to the Caucasus Mountains and lying on the cusp of Christian Europe and Islamic Asia, Georgia is an enchanting mix of old and new, with a pretty landscape that combines mountains and a pretty coastline.

In the space of just a few days you can ski in the mountains, swim in the Black Sea and embrace an amazing culture in the churches, castles and cave-towns, enjoying delicious cuisine, fabulous wines and overwhelming Georgian hospitality.

This tiny, developing country has remained largely unexplored by western travellers, yet it is no stranger to visitors. During a long and fascinating history there have been influences from all over the world and has been traversed by many routes including the Silk Road.

In ancient mythology, this is where Jason and the Argonauts sought The Golden Fleece that would enable him to become king.

There is no denying Georgia's turbulent past - in 1991, Georgia secured its independence after 70 years of Soviet rule: more recently there was conflict with Russia over the disputed province of South Ossetia. But there is no evidence of danger in the quaint streets and cafes of Tbilisi, the peaceful mountains of Kakheti or the semitropical seaside resort of Batumi.

Legend has it that at the beginning of time when God was giving out land to the nations of the world the Georgians were too busy drinking to attend. Arriving late, God was angry and asked why they had dishonoured him so; there was now no land left to give them. But the Georgians replied that far from dishonouring God they were late because they were drinking to His health and this took some time. God was pleased by their answer and so gave them the tiny bit of land he had been keeping for himself.

After enjoying a Georgian style lunch at Lake Kvareli the fable is almost believable. The meal or 'Supra' as the Georgian banquet is called, is preceded by endless toasts. The head of Supra, the Tamada, conducts highly philosophical toasts, making sure that everyone is enjoying themselves.

The meal goes on for hours as a seemingly endless procession of regional foods spreads over the table. Lunch on this occasion included Asian influenced aubergines stuffed with walnut, cheese bread, tarragon salad, barbecued trout and flat crescent shaped breads made while we watched in a traditional outdoor oven.

I had started my tour in the capital Tbilisi. Architecture in the city is a mix of Georgian, with strong influences of Byzantine, neo-classical European/Russian and Middle Eastern styles.

The Old Town on the left bank of the River Mtkvari is picturesque with charming shops and cafes and a walking tour takes in the medieval Narikala Fortress, Mtatsminda Pantheon and the National Gallery.

Looking to immerse ourselves in Georgian traditions we headed for Tbilisi's therapeutic sulphur springs and 17th century bathhouses, located in the city's Abanotubani district.

The poet Pushkin said he had enjoyed "the best bath of his life" in the blue-tiled Byzantine style baths.

The bad-egg smell is overwhelming, but proved worth it. We hired a private room with bath for about 20 for three and for an extra 4 each enjoyed the skills of a local bathhouse attendant who obligingly beat us with a brush.

Invigorated, and to shake off the smell, we took a short drive from Tbilisi to the fresh country air of the Kakheti region of East Georgia, stopping at the 9th century Bodbe Monastery, resting place of St. Nino and the site of healing springs.

Signaghi, called The City of Love, is home to a 24-hour wedding chapel. But this is no Las Vegas; the town is a recognized UNESCO world heritage site, with cobble stone streets and terracotta tile-roofed homes with colourful carved balconies and views of the Alazani Valley and the Great Caucasus Mountains

We stopped at Pheasant's Tears winery to sample a range of local wines. Kakheti is one of the main areas associated with kvevri winemaking, an ancient technique in which clay containers are buried in the earth to store and mature wine. Grapevine has been cultivated in the fertile valleys of Georgia for about 8000 years

Georgia, although compact, is best explored using inexpensive internal flights as the roads into the mountains can be treacherous.

The Queen Tamar airport at Svaneti, Mestia opened less than a year ago to attract skiers and stands out like a shiny new pin among the village hamlets of the region with their watchtowers dating back to medieval times.

The Grand Caucasus Mountains that stretch all the way from the Black Sea coast to the shores of the Caspian have snowy peaks and lush green valleys that bloom in spring. Georgia has some of the world's most spectacular mountains and finest powder, and with a ski season that lasts from November to April, it is one of Europe's best-kept ski secrets.

Enjoying lunch at Tetnuldi Hotel, Svaneti, overlooking the snowy mountains, it was difficult to imagine that the next day we would be dipping our toes in the warm waves of the coastal resort of Batumi, twelve miles from the Turkish border.

Batumi, says Georgia's President, will soon "have better public spaces, cultural centres, transportation system and comfort than Nice or Cannes."

With its wide Mediterranean style boulevards and handful of smart new hotels and shops, the resort is developing, but thankfully at a slow pace.

It retains old world charm with crumbling townhouses and statues of writer Ilia Chavchava, one of its famous sons, sitting alongside fashionable restaurants and bars.

The town jumps to life annually with its Black Sea Jazz festival, this year with stars such as Macy Grey heading the bill and belting out music across the boutiques and beaches.

We lunch at the nostalgic Privet caf, where waiters wear old fashioned sailor suits and walls are graced with sepia prints of old Batumi, including one of the Russian Orthodox church which was formerly on the site of the elegant InTourist Palace hotel which has been welcoming tourists for 75 years.

Although reluctant to leave the seaside, we are enticed into the magical forests south of Batumi, where a dip in the Waterfall of Makhunceti is hard to resist.

Twin peaks at NLCS

Stanmore twins at North London Collegiate School in Edgware gained a combined seven A-star and A grades.

Gemma and Juliette Ginsberg - who will study at Nottingham and Oxford University respectively -were up before six on results day to discover how they had fared. "We both found exams really hard, so we weren't expecting this at all," Gemma confided.

"Our mum was so happy. She kept saying: 'Four A-stars between you.'"

Although the sisters were not competitive with each other, "it's nice that we've got similar results in our final year. It's an extra-special celebration."

CIA fight publication of ex-FBI agents September 11 book

Two of the United States' security agencies are fighting over the publication of a book, co-authored by a Jewish writer, about the September 11 attacks.

The book "The Black Banners: The Inside Story of 9/11 and the War Against al-Qaida" is due to be published on September 12.

Based on the experiences of former FBI counter-terrorism agent Ali Soufan during the war on terror, it has been co-written by New York-based security consultant Daniel Freedman.

Mr Freedman is the director of strategy and policy analysis at the Soufan Group.

Mr Soufan and Mr Freedman are facing calls from the CIA to cut sections of the book, which are said to accuse the CIA of withholding information about the hijackers from the FBI.

The first print version of the book will incorporate the requested cuts, but a spokesman for the publisher said that if the authors successfully challenge the CIA an unredacted version will be published.

Building bridges in Brum

Birmingham Jewish community representative Alan Blumenthal was among the mourners at a public memorial ceremony for the three young Muslim men killed during the recent riots.

The Birmingham Jewish Representative Council vice-chair had previously addressed a peace rally in the city at which he was asked by Tariq Jahan - father of Haroon Jahan, one of the hit-and-run victims - to attend last Thursday's open-air service at Summerfield Park in Winson Green.

"As a retailer in Birmingham, I identified with the fact that the boys had been trying to protect their community's shops," Mr Blumenthal explained. "They were local young people."

He added that there were up to 20,000 people at the service. "To see that many people praying together was quite an experience. We hear so much about radical imams coming to this country to spout hatred, but this imam was the opposite. He spoke about peace and the need for harmony within communities."

Following the public service, the families attended a private burial at Handsworth cemetery.

Mr Blumenthal said he would like to work with the families "to make a lasting memorial to the three boys. Perhaps we can raise money for some youth work. Mr Jahan doesn't want the boys to be forgotten."

In the aftermath of the riots, Mr Blumenthal's eight menswear outlets across the Midlands, Suits Plus, are operating on restricted hours. Although they were were not attacked during the disorder, "shoppers have been frightened away", he reported.
