Waterman: Suspend Chisora

Robert Waterman believes that Dereck Chisora should be banned following his brawl with David Haye in Munich.

Waterman, the UK's leading Jewish boxing promoter, pointed the finger of blame at Haye, whom he once promoted, following the altercation that followed Chisora's defeat in the world title bout against Vitali Klitschko.

Waterman said: "The behaviour of both men was unacceptable. They've let themselves and British boxing down.

"There needs to be a full investigation by the British Boxing Board of Control, but I don't think it's in the interests of sport or society to give them life bans.

"I think Chisora should be suspended. David Haye is not a current licence holder, but if he were to reapply then the British Board of Boxing of Control should impose a penalty."

Waterman was impressed by Chisora's performance in the ring. He said: "Dereck gave a good account of himself. He gave it a good go, but the incidents surrounding the fight have tarnished him, British boxing and world boxing."

Paul Shamplina, who has trained at the same gym as Chisora in Finchley for five years, believes the incidents were out of character. "Dereck has always been cool, calm, courteous friendly and polite and trains hard," said Shamplina.

Waterman, who is the promoter for Eurosport International, has signed Israeli boxer Dan Aharonov, who was the world junior silver medallist and European silver medallist.
