Week ahead: Cold weekend - Milder next week, Feb 15 - 08:40

A brief cold snap over the weekend will be bringing snow showers to Scotland, and some snow showers to Wales on Sunday too. Temperatures should be rising next week as we enter a period of southwesterly winds, with some cloud and outbreaks of rain in the west. For the weather for the next few days click here Saturday 18/2/12 An active cold front sweeps southeast through the country on Saturday. This takes an area of heavy rain and gusty winds with it, the rain turning to wet snow as it clears southwards. The rain is expected through Scotland by dawn, moving into Ireland and northern England in the morning, before clearing through central and southern England through the afternoon. There could be a significant, but short lived snowfall over the hills of northern England, although the chance of early blizzards over the Scottish hills. Heavy wintry showers and strong winds follows through Scotland. Highs at a much colder 3C in northern Scotland, 10C in southern England, although these falling through the day. Sunday 19/2/12 A ridge of high pressure will be building to the west of Ireland on Sunday. A cold northwest flow exists as low pressure clears into the North Sea. This is going to be bringing snow showers around northern and western coasts. Inland it is likely to be dry with lots of sunshine and will be feeling cold. Highs at 1 to 4C.

Monday 20/2/12 The flow returns into the southwest through Monday with high pressure to the south of the country. Low pressure will be close to Ireland as a warm front pases east through Ireland and into Scotland. This brings cloud and outbreaks of rain to many western and northern areas, but the south and east should be drier. Highs at a milder 5 to 9C. Tuesday 21/2/12 Indications of a windier day on Tuesday. A slow moving front affecting the south of the country bringing cloud and periods of rain. Scotland is likely to have more broken cloud with a few bright spells in the far north, but cloud and showers affecting the west. Highs at 13C in southern England, 6C in northern Scotland. Wednesday 22/2/12 A southwest flow through Wednesday brings a fair amount of cloud once again to western coasts. There is the chance of some light rain and drizzle on the western and southern coasts and hills. Brighter weather in more northern and eastern areas with a few showers. Mild again at 7 to 12C. Thursday 23/2/12 Plenty of cloud again through Thursday. There will be some spots of rain on western coasts at times, but more eastern areas are likely to be drier with some bright or sunny spells coming through. Highs at 5 to 10C.
