No copy cats, just coincidence...

There?s been weird stuff going on between The Times fashion pages and The JC fashion pages? cue X Files music.

Last Saturday, September 24, the Times carried a fashion story about impossibly high shoes, and how the fashion pack refused to give them up. Under the headline ?The fashion pack is really not over heels? new fashion editor Laura Craik wrote about ?taxi shoes?, how the fashion editors and top fashion bloggers were clinging on to their impossibly high heels and how this was fine if you had a car waiting to transport you between runway shows, but not so great if you were a real person having to occasionally walk or run?

Observant readers (and I am not talking religiously observant here) may have spotted that the most recent edition of the JC, September 30, which came out on Wednesday ? two days early because of Rosh Hashanah ? also contained a story about shoes, how the fashion pack were wearing ?taxi shoes? with impossibly high heels, and how this worked if you ?had a limo purring? at the kerb, but not so much if you were a real woman who needed to walk, etc.

To the casual observer it might have appeared that the JC had borrowed liberally from The Times story, except that the JC fashion pages containing the shoe story were completed on Thursday September 22, two days before the Times piece.

In today?s edition of the Times, Laura Craik is writing about the Crombie (or, in JC parlance, the boyfriend) coat, about the choices of coats out there, and about the versatility of one particular style of coat.

Your next edition of the JC, on October 7, will contain a spread on choosing your winter coat, the huge choice, the importance of choosing a coat that is versatile. Because of Rosh Hashanah, those pages were completed last Tuesday, on September 27 ? four days ahead of the Times piece.

Just to be clear, I am not for a nano-second suggesting that the Times might copy the JC, and I know I?m not copying the Times, and I also know that fashion pages cover the same ground, write about the same trends, etc. But Laura Craik and I both seem, almost uncannily, to be tuned into extremely similar, if not identical fashion vibes, making similar observations and coming to similar conclusions about readers and their purchases. As I said earlier, cue X Files music?

King Kennet destroys Faithfold

JC CYRIL ANEKSTEIN ROUND THREE
FAITHFOLD A 0 REDBRIDGE JEWISH CARE A 5

A hat-trick from JOSH KENNET inspired cup holders Redbridge A to a stunning 5-0 win at the Hive against an in-form Faithfold.

It was a game where Eilon Kennet's men flexed their muscles, with further strikes from centre half Brad Frankel and Steve Gevertz putting them into the quarter-finals.

RJC boss Eilon Kennet told JC Sport: "I'm really delighted with the performance, not just the score.

"We had a very definite game plan, which the boys put into practice perfectly.

"Also, the level of concentration was excellent and I can't remember Faithfold creating any chances.

"Faithfold are a quality side, particularly strong going forward, so this was very pleasing. The commitment and desire was awesome.

"Some results haven't gone for us and I think they boys were very motivated to change that. It was such a good team performance, and everyone played their part brilliantly.

"I always imagined that the boys were hungry enough to win, but I didn't see a 5-0 result. We were first out of the blocks and never eased up. This was without doubt the best performance so far. Obviously, Josh made a big difference.

"We know he can't be available every week, so we have to get used to reaching this level of performance without him too.

"Yesterday, every player played to his full potential, so I'm sure we can reach these heights again, even if Josh is not on the team-sheet. It was also good to have Stolie back after his operation.

"For the first few games of the season, we struggled for numbers, but now we are back to a healthy competition for places again.

"I think this should kickstart the rest of our season. The boys should now have the self-belief that they can repeat last season's successes again, certainly if they can continue playing like they did yesterday.
Now it's a classic scenario of one game at a time coming up.

"As for the league, so long as the top teams continue to take points off each other we have a chance, but it will be hard.

"First thing we need to do is to catch up with our outstanding fixtures and try to get a run of games going.

"As for the cups, its down to many diverse factors we can't always influence, but it's always fun to play in these competitions, especially when you are one of the cup holders."

Faithfold boss Zuriel Solomon told JC Sport: "We were just not at the races from the first whistle which surprised me as we have been great this year.

"Our performances level were really low and well below par. We have a massive injury list and players playing with injuries so it was always going to be a tough ask. You need good players to win games especially when you play good teams.

"Redbridge played well and deserved there win and the scoreline.

"I will not let this knock the confidence of the side in football you always get an opportunity to make amends.

"Once we have all are players back from injury, we will definitely be better. It's hard to assess your chances when we had so many people playing out of position and making first starts."

Faithfold assistant-player-manager Daryl Phillips told JC Sport: "Josh Kennet was very good as you would expect from a player who has play pro in the Holy land.

"However he was not the difference. We were poor 1-11 they were up for it 1-11.

"They deserved to smash us. We will see how we fare when we next play them and move on from this heavy defeat. It's gone now and so has the CA cup until next year."

Gilad Shalit

Within hours of the news breaking that a deal has been done to secure the release of Gilad Shalit, the debate about whether it is proper to exchange hundreds of Palestinian prisoners for the sake of one Israeli soldier has re-erupted.

Israel has always held to the tenet that it will do anything and pay a very high price for its citizens, something it has demonstrated over and over again. Those who have suffered at the hands of terrorists are, understandably, unhappy about the swap: a former rabbi in the IDF has warned today that those who are being released will slide back into their old haunts and habits immediately, the better to wreak further havoc on Israel.

I was very struck by the comment on one website in which someone wrote that he did not know how the Shalit family would live with themselves when the next inevitable act of terrorism was committed by someone who had been released so that their son could be free. But who can judge the Shalit family in that way? Who can imagine the pain and suffering undergone by the family in the last five years? And who among us can comprehend the lonely, frightening situation of Gilad himself, never knowing if the next knock on the door was someone coming to kill him?

There is no right and wrong answer to this agony, except to be grateful that Gilad Shalit's long nightmare may indeed be coming to an end. May such a nightmare not be repeated by any other Israeli soldier.

PSC forced to cancel trade union conference

The Palestine Solidarity Campaign has been forced to cancel a conference with trade unionists which was due to take place tomorrow.

The event was expected to promote boycott methods and encourage local groups to support BDS measures against Israel. Speakers were to include RMT general secretary Bob Crow.

In a statement, the PSC said the event would be rescheduled for next year and said the move was being made to avoid disrupting preparations for the day of strike action which unions are planning for November 30.

But I'm told that a lack of interest from trade unionists and insufficient numbers of registered participants had caused substantial fears over filling the Congress House venue in central London, and the obvious financial repercussions that would have resulted.

Despite all their talk, it's another example of the BDS movement's failure to generate substantial support.

Seasonal outlook: A cold outlook - Possibly milder Christmas, Oct 31 - 07:29

*December* There appears to be some indication of lower pressure to the north or northeast, higher pressure vales to the west or southwest, this suggests a rather chilly run of northwest to northerly air to begin the first 'meteorological' month of winter. This rather chilly regime should weaken as the cold flow is cut off as pressure rises as a weak high or ridge crosses the UK, the flow behind switching to a less cold westerly. Into the middle of the month the Atlantic seems to have the controlling influence, so temperatures recovering with spells of rain for all areas and windy conditions at times. As we move away from the mid-month period there is evidence to suggest that pressure will be rising once more, so conditions should settle and temperatures falling back to become rather chilly, mist, fog and frost perhaps becoming a persistent problem. The run up to Christmas is where the forecasting becomes 'problematic' and 'interesting' as the evidence suggests that high pressure may become stubbornly entrenched to the east or northeast, Atlantic low pressure piling up as a blocked and complex feature to the west and south west, a strengthening and cold south-easterly to perhaps easterly component wind establishing. This threatening some wintry precipitation as frontal systems move into the UK, I have a 'gut' feeling that Atlantic will eventually win the battle with milder conditions flooding through over Christmas. It will however be 'extremely messy', colder weather returning as the year closes. If I ignore this feeling and 'stick rigidly' to the pattern in front of me then, the cold weather persists and it'll remain very cold and wintry through until the end of the month, low pressure moving into a very cold pool of air, over the UK with further wintry precipitation for all areas. *January* It's a cold start to 2012 with low pressure edging away to the east, a cold northerly flow covering all regions, wintry showers beginning to die away as pressure rises and an anticyclone builds through the UK, settling the weather in a cold and still pattern. High pressure persists for a time as does the settled and chilly weather, this anticyclone shows signs of pulling back westward into the central Atlantic, allowing a more unsettled northwest to westerly flow to establish across all areas in the run up to mid-month, low pressure then moving into the UK, rather unsettled cold and windy, a real messy scenario with spells of rain, sleet and some wintry precipitation too almost anywhere. The middle of the month looks like seeing colder weather for all areas and with low pressure wrapped up within the pattern, this may lead to a rather wintry spell for all areas during this middle period. This rather chilly and wintry mix continue right through until the latter stages of the month, when the flow looks likely to ease as pressure rises to the southwest with milder westerly regime establishing. However this recovery in terms of both temperature and fortune may be temporary as colder air looks likely to flood back into the UK late in the month. Struggling to pay the bills

A poignant letter in this week?s Jewish Tribune reveals one family's battle to keep their head above water in these hard economic times.

The anonymous writer used to raise money for Jewish schools, then he lost his job, home and became bankrupt. Life is now a constant struggle.

For a while, paying Jewish schools weren?t a problem but then they became a ?living nightmare? for him. I assume he is a member of the Charedi community and therefore has sent his children to one of the independent strictly Orthodox schools.

He continues:

?Recently, a school governor decided that my minimum payment should be 1,500 per term?.I had already been given a plastic card banning my son from all areas of the school because I had paid nothing.

?But then I owe everybody money? gemachim [loan charities], rabbonim, personal loans, grocery bills.

?I have to find 1,800 per month just for rent when many months I earn nothing at all?.

?? When I had put together 1,000 to pay part of a term?s school fees, the rent went unpaid that month, and I still cannot pay it.?

He goes on to say that a governor of the school spotted him when he took his family on ?our first few days? holiday in seven years? and he was asked where he had got the money for that. ?Surely he was right. I should not have taken this vacation. However, my wife has driven our children to school for the last 20 years every single day without complaint. If not me, then surely she needed a break?

?For the first time in my life, I was aware that my wife and I were sacrificing food so that our children could eat properly?

?So, please, before we assume that all those not paying full school fees are a burden, have a little rachmonus for those who sincerely cannot afford to pay and I beg of you, pleasae stop sending us threatening letters, ?ban cards? and regular reminders of how much we owe.?

I wonder how many more tales there are like this.

Sushi? It's the new hummus

What is it about Israelis and sushi? The Middle East and Japan are many miles apart, and you would think the Israeli appetite for hearty, spicy fare with plenty of dairy would be at odds with a cuisine composed of dainty portions of fish, rice and seaweed.

But think again - sushi is becoming the favourite dish of cosmopolitan Israelis in the same way Brits have embraced chicken tikka masala, rather than roast beef, as our most popular national dish.

In Tel Aviv and Eilat, particularly, they cannot get enough of it. Both cities are packed with sushi restaurants (more than 130 in Tel Aviv alone), provoking the memorable newspaper headline, "Israelis fear sushi shortage after quake", referring to how the Japanese disaster earlier this year interrupted exports of essential supplies.

The raw fish delicacy, which has been raised to an edible art form in its homeland, has invaded even the most traditional aspects of Israeli life. The smartest weddings have long had a sushi stand at the pre-dinner reception, and hotels have also jumped on the bandwagon.

"The Friday night sushi buffet at Dan Eilat is very popular," says Su Newman, spokesman for Dan Hotels in Israel. "Our food and beverage director believes that Israelis like sushi because it is considered to be trendy, American and healthy."

American? Possibly that idea spread when Tel Aviv got its own branch of the Manhattan-born Japanese fusion restaurant, Sushi Samba. Or it may simply be because when Israelis visit the USA, they find neighbourhood sushi restaurants a deeply-embedded part of their hosts' culture.

Is it really a desire for light, healthy food, which is behind the sushi craze? The macrobiotic principles to which sushi loosely adheres have certainly been credited with rebalancing acidity within the body. But Ben Maharovsky of
Mul Yam, Israel's fine seafood restaurant which is a principal supplier of fish to the country's sushi bars, believes the craze is linked more to a sociable way of eating.

"In Israel, sushi is more about the fun of eating at a bar," he suggests. "It's the scene, the hype, the music, feeling young.

"As for the fish, for a lot of Israeli aficionados the sushi is as much about the spicy mayo as the raw ingredients. What I do know is that it's becoming like hummus in Israel - you see a sushi bar on almost every street corner, and I see kids as young as four or five tucking in."

The nearest thing we have to an expert on the phenomenon in the UK is Israeli-born chef Hili Sharabani who owns of a Japanese restaurant. She thinks shushi holds a hidden meaning for a nation which has battled decades of hard economic times.

"There's something prestigious about sushi which appeals to Israelis, who like to live well, as though it's their last day," she explains. "Besides, sushi is light but also filling and comforting."

Sharabani, who studied philosophy before she went into catering in Israel, now presides with her husband Peter over the kitchen at Watatsumi, a new Japanese restaurant off Trafalgar Square. "I don't make the sushi - Japanese sushi chefs study for years, and our sushi master came to us from Nobu," she says.

It was at Nobu in London, where Sharabani was employed after impressing the head chef, that she met Peter and got a crack at preparing Japanese food.

"I've loved it since we started getting really good sushi in Tel Aviv 10 years ago, and it's been as popular there ever since," she says.

Lookback: October Lookback - A very warm month, Nov 05 - 17:36

October 2011 was a warm but changeable month with frequent southwesterly and southerly winds - indeed it was the 11th most 'southwesterly' October in 139 years of records. Mean monthly temperatures were among the highest on record; the Central England Temperature has been higher only in 1921, 1969, 1995, 2001, 2005 and 2006. It is noteworthy that all seven warmer Octobers have occurred in the last 100 years, six of them in the last half-century, and five in the last 16 years.

Mean maximum temperature for October ranged from 18.1°C at Heathrow, Kew Gardens, St James's Park and Olympic Park South (all London) to 10.5°C at Dalwhinnie (Inverness-shire), while mean minimum temperature varied between 12.8°C at St Catherine's Point (Isle of Wight) and Portland (Dorset), and 6.3°C at Loch Glascarnoch and Elphin (both Wester Ross). Mean maximum temperature ranged from 0.0-0.5 °C above normal in western Scotland to 3.5°C above in the Midlands, while mean minimum temperature was 1.5 to 2.5°C above in most regions. The Central England Temperature (CET) of 12.7°C was 2.3°C above the long-term mean making this the warmest October since 2006.

The highest maximum at a standard site (i.e excluding rooftop and mountain sites) in the UK was 29.9°C at Swanscombe/Broadness on the 1st - a new UK record for October - while the lowest minimum was minus 3.3°C at Lynford (Norfolk) early on the 20th. The lowest daytime maximum was 4.3°C at Loch Glascarnoch (Wester Ross) on the 19th, and the warmest night was that of the 30th Sep/1st Oct with a minimum of 18.6°C at Emley Moor (West Yorks).

Rainfall averaged over England and Wales during October was 68mm which is 94 per cent of the average for the standard reference period 1971-2000, the highest for this month since 2008; in the last 100 years 67 Octobers were wetter while 33 were drier. The equivalent figures for Scotland were 132mm and 117 per cent of the normal amount, and for Northern Ireland 153mm and 156 per cent. At a more local level, rainfall ranged from more than twice the average in parts of southwest Scotland and Northern Ireland to less than one-quarter of the average locally in East Anglia, the East Midlands and the northern Home Counties. Monthly totals at routinely-available sites varied between 474mm at Cluanie Inn (Wester Ross) and 13mm at Cambridge.

Sunshine averaged over England and Wales during October was 122 hours which is 109 per cent of the 1971-2000 mean - almost exactly the same as October 2010. In the last 100 years 28 Octobers were sunnier while 72 were duller. The equivalent figures for Scotland were 69 hours and 78 per cent, and for Northern Ireland 68 hours and 72 per cent. Largest total in the UK was 163 hours at Manston (Kent) and the smallest was 30 hours at Eskdalemuir (Dumfriesshire) - a new October low for the site in over 100 years of records.

Recipe: Hake with lemongrass and tomato salsa

We put this on the menu recently and it is incredibly popular. I love the balance of flavours and textures. The cherry tomato salsa has a good combination of sweetness from the tomatoes and red onion, sour from the vinegar, and heat from the chilli. It works with the meaty hake steaks. Israeli couscous gives some bite, which is why it is important you do not overcook it.

Serves 6

Ingredients

? 6 hake steaks, 200g-225g each
? Flour, for dusting the fish
? Olive oil, for frying

For the Salsa
? 125ml extra virgin olive oil
? 2 lemongrass stalks, outer stalk and base removed, thinly sliced
? 3 garlic cloves, chopped
? 1 thumb-sized knob of ginger, finely chopped
? 1 medium red onion, thinly sliced
? 3 green chillies, deseeded and sliced
? 90ml red wine vinegar
? 500g cherry tomatoes
? 2 tbsp demerara sugar
? Juice of lime
? bunch spring onion, sliced
? bunch coriander, chopped

For the Couscous
? 400g Israeli couscous
? 60ml olive oil
? 2 shallots, finely chopped
? 2 garlic cloves, minced
? 1.5ltr chicken stock
? 2tbsp parsley, chopped

Method

To prepare the salsa
? Heat oven to 120?C. Blitz two thirds of the olive oil, the lemongrass, two thirds of the garlic and ginger until fine.
? Season the tomatoes, drizzle with olive oil, 30ml of red wine vinegar and sprinkle with demerara and roast until they start to burst but retain their shape (approx 25 mins).
? Heat the remaining oil and over a medium-low heat, gently fry the red onion, green chilli and remaining garlic until starting to caramelise.
? Add the lemongrass and ginger paste and cook on a gentle heat for 10 minutes, then add the remaining vinegar. Turn up the heat and reduce by half.
? Add the roasted tomatoes and juices, bring to the boil. Squash some tomatoes using a wooden spoon to release their juices. Cook for a further 3-5 minutes.
? Remove from the heat, add the lime juice, spring onion and coriander and check for seasoning.

To prepare the couscous
? Heat the olive oil on a medium heat and sweat the shallots until softened. Add the minced garlic, sweat quickly and then add the couscous. Fry, stirring frequently, until golden brown.
? Add the chicken stock, bring to the boil, reduce heat and cook for approximately 15 minutes until cooked but still al dente. Remove from the heat and cool with the lid on to complete the cooking process. Season to taste and add the parsley.
? Dust the hake steaks in flour. Shake off the excess, season generously and shallow fry in olive oil until golden brown on both sides, ensuring it is cooked through.

To serve
? Place the couscous on the plate, with the hake on top and spoon a generous helping of the relish on top. Drizzle with olive oil.

The kick Irish sports need at the World Championships

Colin O'Hanlon

YOU may not be aware but Ireland is currently hosting a World Championships. For the first time ever the world's best kick boxers will be on show in Dublin, as more than 800 athletes from 53 countries jet in to take part in the sports showpiece event this week.

Minister Michael Ring opened the World Kick Boxing Championships at the City West Hotel yesterday, a truly historic moment for all those involved with the sport in the country. After years of hard work organisers have finally been able to bring the tournament to Ireland.

“We’ve always aspired to having something like this in Ireland, it’s only now after 15 to 20 years of work and development of the sport, nationally and internationally, that we’ve had an opportunity to run the World Championships here,” said Roy Baker, president of Kick Boxing Ireland.

Indeed Ireland go into the tournament as one of the countries with a high chance of securing medals. “Ireland is ranked sixth in the world; we would be one of the strongest kick boxing federations regarding the quality,” said Baker. “So we would be very hopeful that we have some serious medal hopes.”

However despite success at international level the sport has gone somewhat unnoticed at home, something that Baker hopes the World Championships will change. “It’s always difficult to get publicity when you’re up against the majority sports but we’re happy and it’s all positive. Of course we’d like to get more, but we’re happy because we don’t normally get on national television. It’s a further stepping stone for our sport.”

To ensure their athletes have the perfect build up, Kick Boxing Ireland have spared no expense in the pursuit of medals. “We’ve put more preparation into this World Championships more than any before. We’ve had athletes travel all over the world, to Italy, America, Germany, a huge amount of preparation. It truly is a once in a lifetime possibilty for our athletes.”

One of those athletes is Robbie McMenamy, the current WAKO Pro World Champion. McMenamy divides his training with his day job as a Dublin Fire Fighter and has high hopes for the coming week.”I hope to win it, I have a good draw. I won the Irish open this year against the same guys I’ll be fighting against in this tournament so there’s no reason not to replicate that.”

It appears that the Kick Boxing has a bright future in Ireland, as the sport continues to grow nationwide. “Kick Boxing Ireland has over 12,000 members now. We’re one of the largest national governing bodies in Ireland,” said Baker.

“The sport is developing; we’re getting stronger and stronger. We’re really challenging the other combat sports out there. I’m not aware of any other combat sport having that number of registered fighters. We’ve a very modern sport and we seem to be getting there now.”

Michigan's BCS plans await one final weekend of games: Weekly Wolverine Watch

Michigan remains two spots out of BCS eligibility entering the last week of the regular season, but next weekend's games will likely move the Maize and Blue up.

mich-celebrate-horiz-mct.jpgView full sizeThe celebration is probably still going on in Ann Arbor, but Michigan still needs a little help to reach a BCS game for the holidays.

COLUMBUS, Ohio -- Michigan isn't into a BCS bowl quite yet.

To be eligible for an at-large BCS selection, a team must finish in the top 14 of the BCS standings. Right now, the Wolverines are No. 16. But that's for now, as the path to the top 14 isn't very difficult.

No. 14 Georgia faces No. 1 LSU in the SEC title game and is expected to lose, obviously, but the Wolverines need to move up one other spot. No. 13 Michigan State and No. 15 Wisconsin will meet in the Big Ten title game, and expecting the loser to fall behind Michigan isn't necessarily assured, but likely. Too many voters will penalize the title game loser for the loss, even though, for instance, Michigan State beat Michigan head-to-head in a game that wound up determining the Legends Division winner. It may not be fair, but it's how it often works.

Since there is some doubt, Michigan should also root for No. 3 Oklahoma State to beat No. 10 Oklahoma, likely knocking what would be the three-loss Sooners behind Michigan as well.

If the Wolverines are eligible for a BCS bowl, they'll almost assuredly be picked. If Georgia beats LSU for the automatic SEC bid, and LSU and Alabama are still No. 1 and No. 2 and locked into the title game, the SEC would get three bids. But in every other case, conferences are limited to two bids. That will help Michigan here.

"I think we have a good football team," Michigan coach Brady Hoke said after Saturday's 40-34 win over Ohio State when asked about BCS possibilities. "Somebody else will make that decision."

Actually, the system will make most of the decision. While the Wolverines aren't in now, they should be by next week and ready to make their first Sugar Bowl appearance since losing to Bo Jackson's Auburn team, 9-7, on Jan. 2, 1984.
