Hollywood star Sheen helps to shine spotlight on our winners

HOLLYWOOD star Michael Sheen is no stranger to glitzy red carpet ceremonies and has received a string of awards and nominations for his work.

Now the Port Talbot actor will have the chance to present an award to a deserving individual — at the Evening Post's very own Pride Awards.

Yes, you heard right! The award-winning star, who has played roles from Tony Blair to Brian Clough, been the voice of the White Rabbit and transformed into a vampire, has confirmed he will attend the Pride Awards at Swansea's Brangwyn Hall on March 11.

The 41-year-old celebrated actor said he was supporting the Pride Awards because they recognised true celebrities — deserving people who often went unnoticed.

"The Evening Post Pride Awards give us all the opportunity to celebrate those people at the heart of our communities," he said.

"The people these awards put the spotlight on usually work behind closed doors or go unnoticed until we have need of them ourselves.

"They care, they inspire, they protect and they nurture and without them, we would have nothing." Since launching the Pride Awards in December, we have been swamped with nominations.

And tomorrow our three judges will begin the difficult task of whittling them down to eventually find a winner and two runners-up in nine categories.

Our judging panel, which consists of Swans manager Brendan Rodgers, Swansea Lord Mayor Richard Lewis and Swansea entertainer Kevin Johns will meet at the Evening Post's offices in Adelaide Street, Swansea, to decide the shortlist.

A three-course dinner will take place at the Brangwyn Hall which will include entertainment from the Phoenix Choir, and of course the inspiring award ceremony itself.

The awards are a chance to give those who go out of their way to help others a little bit of the spotlight they deserve.

Categories on the night are: Teacher or mentor of the year; Grass Roots Sports coach of the year; Community Champion; Charity Champion; Good Neighbour/ Volunteer of the Year; Bravery; Carer of the Year; Ambassador; Child of Courage (18 and under) and Lifetime Achievement Award.

Despite the Hollywood actor's work commitments, the former Glan Afan School pupil has not forgotten his roots. And the A-lister is using his memories of his home town's once-famous passion plays as the starting point for his latest project.

Sheen is the creative director of Passion, the last in a series of 13 new productions under the auspices of the National Theatre of Wales, which will be performed over four days in Easter.

He said: "It's not going to be in a theatre.

"It will use the whole town, with the people of the town contributing to it.

"It's a story about the town, by the town, for the town."

It is the affable actor's pride in his community that has led him to support the Pride Awards.

He said: "Community is something that we should never take for granted.

"It is not our right, it is something we have to fight for and nurture.

"Let's celebrate people, for once, who thoroughly deserve it." Meyrick Sheen said his son and the rest of his family were proud to be attending the Pride Awards.

He said: "I attended the awards last year and it was thoroughly inspiring and an excellent event.

"We are looking forward to going again, especially as Michael will be attending the event.

"As he is not in the area that much, it will be nice for myself and my wife Irene to attend such a prestigious event with Michael.

"We are very proud to and honoured to be attending and look forward to seeing this year's deserving unsung heroes."

The Evening Post's assistant editor Cathy Duncan said: "We are delighted Michael and his family can attend to share in such a special night.

"It reflects on the commitment he still has to the area he loves."

Other special guests will be announced closer to the date.

Tickets are now on sale for the Pride Awards and cost 45 per person. Call our ticket hotline on 01792 514112. Tickets will be on a first come, first served basis. The awards are sponsored by Kevin Thomas Pharmacy, McDonalds, Sunny Haven and Blazers, Grwp Gwalia, Hutchinson Thomas Solicitors and Notaries Public and Soccer Skills Swansea.
