Trial date set for men charged with Mullany murders

TWO men charged over the murders of honeymoon couple Ben and Catherine Mullany in Antigua will go on trial in May, prosecutors said.

Kaniel Martin, 23, and Avie Howell, 19, have been remanded in custody until the trial at the Caribbean island's High Court in St Johns on May 23.

The trial is expected to take at least two months, prosecutors said.

The Mullanys, from Swansea, were the victims of a violent attack at the Cocos Hotel and Resort on the south-west of the holiday isle in the summer of 2008.

The couple were on the final day of their honeymoon when they were attacked on July 27.

Mrs Mullany, 31, a doctor, died instantly in what is believed to have been a botched robbery at their isolated cottage at the beachside resort.

Her husband, a trainee physiotherapist who was also 31, died in hospital in Swansea a week later after being flown home while in a coma.
