Month ahead: Valid from 22/01 to 18/02 2011 - Cool but not very cold, Jan 16 - 23:42

"If we had no winter, the spring would not be so pleasant." - Anne Bradstreet The current pattern is indicating that conditions should settle down and also 'cool' down, there are no strong indicators just yet that a return to real cold continental or Arctic origin air is waiting or lurking in the wings, however the situation will have to be monitored for alterations. If correct then a spell of quieter and noticeably cooler conditions is anticipated to be establishing through the short term and, save for one or two 'wobbles', this scenario is expected to extend possibly through the latter stages of January into perhaps the beginning of February, when temperatures recover to somewhat milder levels. The middle pattern looks rather unsettled but generally mild through the early to middle stages of February before there's the hint of somewhat colder conditions later in the month. *22/01/11 - 28/01/11* High pressure should have regained control of the overall patter and be sitting over or close to the UK, the indications being that the main centre will be centred to the east or perhaps northeast. The recent milder conditions are likely to have been replaced by cooler to colder conditions, although nowhere near as severe as we saw earlier in the winter, that said with light winds and clear skies frost and fog will be a potential problem and it will be chilly where these conditions persist. If the pattern is correct then it looks as though although there is likely to be some weakening of the anticyclone to the northeast the mainly dry conditions will persist through the middle of the period, the flow swinging around to the south, so less cold air being drawn into the UK. Western areas may see increasing cloud and a freshening breeze as Atlantic low pressure moves closer to the northwest of the UK, some patchy rain extending through the west and becoming milder here. *29/01/11 - 04/02/11* High pressure will remain a feature to the east or northeast but its influence over the UK will be on the wane as low pressure to the west pushes cloud and rain through all western areas which will the extend eastward on a freshening southerly breeze, this swinging into the west or southwest as rain clears east. Through the remainder of the period Atlantic low pressure takes control of the pattern, so temperatures should be recovering well into the mild category but at the expense of a good deal of cloud, outbreaks of rain and a stiff west to southwesterly breeze, which may take the edge of the temperature somewhat. *05/02/11 - 11/02/11* Rather unsettled throughout this period as low pressure will be in overall control of the pattern. The flow throughout the period looks set to be from the west or southwest, so once again temperatures should be holding up well. Outbreaks of rain and showers will be affecting all areas, some heavy rain is likely through western and northwestern Britain and it will be windy at times, again especially in exposed western districts. There is the possibility of some drier and brighter spells over southern and southeastern England, although nothing to be relied upon as here too it'll be mainly unsettled throughout the period. Some colder air may temporarily encroach into northern Britain with a few wintry showers over higher ground but this is not expected to be extensive/ *12/02/11 - 18/02/11* The mainly westerly to southwesterly flow continues throughout the period, although an alteration in the general emphasis is likely through the week. The unsettled conditions are likely to continue through the early part of the period with further outbreaks of rain primarily across the northern half of the UK, southern England is expected to be rather to be more showery in nature, all areas remain quite mild. Through the latter stages of the week pressure is expected to be on the rise to the south, the flow across England and Wales becoming more anticyclonic in influence. Winds here will fall lighter and there'll be broken cloud with good sunnier breaks, pleasant through the day but a recipe for mist, fog and frost overnight *19/02/11 - 23/02/11* Any settled weather across the south may be temporary, the indication being that it once again turns unsettled and there is the hint that a 'blast' from the Arctic may be about the be unleashed? Milder at first across all areas with rain, although as low pressure clears to the east, a much colder regime could push quickly south, wintry showers becoming widespread and with a return to sharp overnight frost.
