Charity plans full life for Monty after police retirement

Former police horse Monty is joining the adoption scheme at his new home at HorseWorld. The 18-year-old bay gelding retired from the Avon and Somerset mounted police unit last autumn after 11 years on the beat. His days of crime-busting were curtailed when he developed arthritis in his legs and since arriving at HorseWorld's base in Whitchurch, Bristol, has spent time grazing in the fields and acting as a mentor to younger horses learning to be ridden on the roads. Now the 16.3hh Shire-thoroughbred cross, pictured with his police groom, Natalie Simmons, has another job that will see him promoting the charity's adoption scheme

His old friends at the mounted section are also planning to go along during the current half term break to see him, subject to work commitments. They are hoping to be there today and on Wednesday.

Monty was one of the force's best and most reliable horses, policing towns and cities and being called up for major events such as the Lord Mayor's Parade in London and the wedding of Prince Charles and the Duchess of Cornwall, at Windsor.

He was a regular at football matches and was also on duty at the Glastonbury Festival.

He was named after the section's late farrier, Monty Ball, who shod the police horses for more than 50 years and whose son, Andrew, has continued the role.

Karen Hardwick, HorseWorld's visitor centre yard manager, said: "Monty is a wonderful character. He loves attention so we are sure he will enjoy meeting the public and we hope lots of people will adopt Monty."

By adopting a horse of pony, supporters can help HorseWorld continue its rescue, rehabilitation and re-homing work.

It costs 20 and in return adopters receive a certificate, newsletter and updates about their horse, as well as half-price admission to the visitor centre.
