IF, as is rumoured, David Cameron uses next month's Tory conference to trumpet the electrification of the rail network to Cardiff, it will be painted as a great result for Wales.
But it will be hugely disappointing blow to Swansea and all stations west of the capital.
It will effectively divide the Welsh rail system in two — the express line leading out of Wales and a glorified stop-start commuter route serving the hinterland.
In a sense, for Swansea it would be worse if the electrified route stopped at Cardiff rather than Bristol because it gives the false impression that there is little past the capital worth rushing to.
This really is a cause worth fighting to help the long-term prosperity of Wales as a whole.
