Seasonal outlook: Fine April to mid-May - More unsettled later, Mar 06 - 20:33

*April 2011* April looks as if it'll open with collapsing anticyclonic influences across the British Isles, so any drier and brighter conditions established through central England being eroded, all areas becoming rather unsettled with low pressure close by the UK. Conditions will be characteristically showery in nature; some of these could be on the 'beefy' side and with the air still inherently rather chilly across much of the UK, these may be falling wintry over higher ground especially in the northern half of the country. Through the latter stages of the first week, pressure should be on the rise to the west and this should dampen down the showery activity through western Britain and with the swinging around to a lighter north-westerly, it'll be feeling less cold everywhere. Through to the middle of April it looks as if high pressure could be ridging across the middle portion of the British Isles, so the prospects for drier conditions to establish across southern and central Britain, feeling milder too in some good lengthy spells of increasing spring sunshine. Northern Britain looks as though they'll be more cloud from time to time and some patchy light rain as a mainly light south-westerly breeze. As we move into the latter stages of the month high pressure is indicated to be building quite strongly, a large anticyclone settling over the UK. All areas seeing a good deal of dry and settled weather with some lengthy spells of sunshine developing. We'll be chasing areas of cloud around the British Isles feeding in off the North Sea. This should burn away readily through central and southern Britain but may plague eastern and south-eastern areas, where it be feeling somewhat chillier than elsewhere. For while through the closing stages of the month it is possible as low pressure to the south edges closer to southern Britain, there's an increased threat of cloud and showery rain effecting southern counties of England and Wales coupled with a freshening easterly too south-easterly breeze it'll feel rather cold here. ? *May 2011* The new month of May could almost be described as a repeat performance of last month as once again high pressure looks as it'll be seen as a declining influence across the UK, slowly slipping southward and allowing a cloudier westerly feed of Atlantic air to effect firstly northern Britain, whilst southern areas continuing to see variable cloud but remain mainly dry for a while longer. Through to the end of the first week all areas look rather more unsettled with some lengthier spells of rain at times occurring almost anywhere followed by heavy showers and sunny spells. Following this they'll be a recovery in pressure across southern Britain as high pressure builds over the near Continent, England and Wales and for a time, northern areas too should see some decent mid-spring conditions, feeling warmer in strong sunshine and light winds. This doesn't seem to last over the northern half of the UK however as low pressure tracking to the northwest turns the conditions rather more mixed with showers of longer spells of rain? The middle of the month through to the beginning of the third week sees a rather more unsettled regime taking hold everywhere, so all of us seeing showers or longer spells of rain from time, the extreme southern part of England perhaps most favoured to remain dry and brighter. The final week of May could well see the first 'taste of thing to come' as far as summer 2011 is concerned. Coupled with rising pressure over the near continent and lower pressure to the west or south-west, a southerly to south- easterly feed it pulling in continental sourced air, it has the potential to become rather warm, perhaps locally very warm across England and Wales? However I don't believe it'll last, I doubt whether they be enough heat build up for it all the 'go bang' but perhaps more of a 'thud' as fresher Atlantic feeds across all areas from the west?
