Clubhouse confidential: Right fielder Shin-Soo Choo, dealing with soreness in the lower left side of his back, did not start for the second straight game Friday but said he hopes to return to the lineup today.

"Wednesday it was really hurting, but Thursday and [Friday] it felt much better," Choo said. "I'm very pleased with the progress."

Choo said he initially was concerned because he never had suffered an injury in that spot.

"I've talked with a couple guys who had it, and they told me, 'Don't rush or it could be 3-4 months,' " he said. "You've got to be smart about it."

Choo has felt no pain when he swings.

"Taking pitches is the problem," he said. "When you're stopping your momentum and holding up, that's when it really hits you."

Stat of the day: Indians designated hitter Jim Thome entered Friday with 601 career home runs, including a franchise-high 334 with Cleveland. The rest of the Tribe's active roster had a combined 255 homers.
