Seasonal outlook: Fine start to September - Unsettled end, Aug 08 - 08:53

*September* The 'first' month of autumn, meteorologically speaking, may begin a bit mixed after a late August hangover of unsettled weather, conditions should improve through the first week as pressure slowly rises from the south or south-west, low pressure becoming stalled to the southwest before declining and slipping away, a gentle south-easterly gradually lifting the temperatures. Through until the end of the second week of September it looks as if high pressure will be maintained across the UK, evidence of either a weak area of high pressure or ridge holding through England and Wales, further north too there is the likelihood of a good deal of dry and fine weather at first, however this is indicated to be eroded by cloudier and cooler conditions later as the ridge declines. Through the middle of September high pressure looks as if it'll be on the decline, northern and north-western Britain seeing the first signs of this westerly change as cloud and outbreaks of rain spill in from off the Atlantic, England and Wales although mainly fine at first, will see thickening cloud and showery rain moving south as the high pressure ridge declines and slips away south, a noticeably cooler and stronger westerly flow developing. Through the remainder of September the pattern looks fairly static, that is we should see little variation in a mainly westerly flow, high pressure to the south, lower pressure to the north and northwest. The conditions across the whole UK dictated by just how strong the systems are passing to the northwest? High pressure to the south and south-west is indicated to be 'pulsing' in to and away from southern England, so largely dry across extreme southern areas, whilst remaining areas see some cloudier spells at time, alternating with mainly light showery outbreaks elsewhere across southern Britain. A stiffer and more noticeable westerly flow featuring across northern areas brings some heavier rain at times and showers following on a cooler westerly. As the month draws to a close there's the prospect of drier conditions establishing everywhere as a build of pressure takes place, with a large anticyclone settling over the UK. *October* The beginning of this month may provide all of us with a 'taste' of both sides of autumn, the week commencing on a settled, dry and pleasant anticylonic note, however this area of high pressure may not be hanging around as it looks as if all areas will soon see an abrupt alteration, wet and very windy weather takes hold with the possibility of the first autumnal gales setting in across mainly the north? Right through until the middle of the month all areas are likely to be cool, windy and wet at times as low pressure takes control of the pattern, autumn well and truly here if the pattern proves to be correct, conditions easing somewhat later but still controlled by low pressure. There is a hint that southern areas may see a brief respite through the third week as higher pressure establishes to the south or southeast, but nothing to write home about and looks set to be eroded away by further unsettled weather established across the central and northern Britain. The month closes on a very unsettled note, all areas seeing further outbreaks of rain, strong winds and rather cool conditions, on this pattern at least, low pressure firmly in control.
