Lookback: November 2010 Lookback - Warm start; wintry finish, Dec 03 - 15:21

The month opened with several days of very mild southwesterly winds which brought the highest November temperatures for seven years to southern and eastern districts, but there were heavy orographically-enhanced rainfall in the north and west. The second and third weeks were unsettled and occasionally rather cold, and the month ended with a week of exceptionally cold and wintry weather.

Mean maximum temperature for November ranged from 11.0°C at St Mary's (Isles of Scilly) to 3.8°C at Dalwhinnie (Inverness-shire), while mean minimum temperature varied between 8.2°C at St Mary's and minus 1.5°C at Loch Glascarnoch (Wester Ross). Both mean maximum and mean minimum temperatures were between 1 and 2°C below the average for the standard reference period 1971-2000 in most parts of the UK. The Central England Temperature (CET) of 5.0°C was 1.9°C below the long-term mean, and the lowest since 1993. During the last 100 years only 11 Novembers were colder.

The highest maximum at a standard site (i.e excluding rooftop and mountain sites) in the UK was 19.0°C at St James's Park (London) on the 4th (the highest anywhere in the UK in November since 2003), while the lowest minimum was minus 18.0°C at Llysdinan (Breconshire) overnight 27th/28th (a new low record for Wales, although it should be emphasised there were very few recording sites in mid-Wales before the 1980s). The lowest daytime maximum was minus 6.7°C at Loch Glascarnoch (Sutherland) on the 30th, and the warmest night was that of the 3rd/4th with a minimum of 15.9°C at Olympic Park (London).

Rainfall averaged over England and Wales was 92.6mm which is 92 per cent of the average for the standard reference period 1971-2000; in the last 100 years 48 Novembers were wetter and 52 were drier. The equivalent figures for Scotland were 103.5mm and 102 per cent of the normal amount, and for Northern Ireland 105.2mm and 124 per cent. Monthly totals at routinely-available sites ranged from 295mm at Inveruglas (Dunbartonshire) to just 16mm in Cambridge.

Sunshine averaged over England and Wales during November was 75.6 hours which is 113 per cent of the 1971-2000 mean. The equivalent figures for Scotland were 68.0 hours and 129 per cent, and for Northern Ireland 85.4 hours and 151 per cent. Largest total was 95.1 hours at Auchincruive (Ayrshire), and the smallest was 36.8 hours at Lerwick (Shetland).

The windiest day of the month was the 12th with gusts to 91 mph at Capel Curig in Snowdonia.
