Love has warmed hearts in Scotland this week with the announcement that Rabbi Nancy Morris, minister of Glasgow Reform, is to marry congregant Jim Jarvie.
The couple hope to wed next August with rabbis Andrew Goldstein and James Baden, both longstanding friends of the bride, officiating at the chupah.
Montreal-born Rabbi Morris joined the most northerly Reform community seven years ago having been rabbi of a community in Ontario. Prior to that she gained semichah at Leo Baeck College. She is the first female rabbi in Scotland and is believed to be the first female rabbi to marry in Scotland. Mr Jarvie is an IT consultant and plays an active role in community life.
"We met at shul years ago when he first joined," said Rabbi Morris. "I came to realise what a wonderful and kind person he is." She added: "We want to get married in the shul, at home."
Mr Jarvie said: "I'm becoming accustomed to being asked if I am now to be referred to as 'The rebbetzin'."
Shul chairman Caroline Judah said: "The whole congregation is united in wishing them a hearty mazeltov."
