UK Forecast: Staying cold - Freezing fog forming, Dec 22 - 22:36

Thursday A cold day across the country again. A brisk northeast wind affecting much of the Midlands, eastern and southern England bringing a few snow showers to eastern coasts. mainly dry for most places although rather cloudy. The best of the sunshine will be across western Wales and southwest England. A few snow showers affecting northeastern coasts of England and eastern Scotland. To the west it is going to be a bright, cold and sunny morning and staying this way into the afternoon. Temperature below freezing for many with highs of just -6C in central Scotland, 3C in southeast England.

Thursday Night Pressure continues to build to the north and west of the country as the northeast flow persists to the east. There is the threat of an area of snow slipping through the far southeast of England tonight, perhaps bringing a few centimetres to parts of Kent with strong winds in the southeast too. An odd snow shower on eastern coasts of England and Scotland too. More western areas are going to be dry though. Under clear skies some mist and fog patches may form with lows at -1C in the far southeast, -11C in central Scotland but as low as -15C in Ireland.

Christmas Eve A very cold Christmas Eve with high pressure centred across the north of the country. With light winds across Scotland, Ireland, northern England, Wales and the Midlands temperatures will be very low. Freezing fog patches will have formed overnight and there is a chance that some of these could last throughout the day. Where they do clear it will be sunny. Breezier weather and some sunny spells over southeastern areas, and a low risk of some snow showers for Kent. Windy in the far southeast too with highs of -6C in central Scotland and 3C in the far southeast.

Christmas Day Staying cold for Christmas Day as an area of high pressure remains across the country. Freezing fog may well become widespread through much of the Midlands, Wales, northern England and Scotland. It may be that the fog does not clear through the day from many areas. Fog patches over southern England too, although there will be breaks here with a chance of some bright or sunny spells too. Over Ireland winds will be increasing with some rain, sleet and snow reaching the west. Highs at 4C in the far southeast. -5C where freezing fog persists.
