Seasonal outlook: Christmas snow? - Could be cold, Oct 17 - 22:27

It may be best to check the waterproof for November and the warm coat for December- Just in case! The pattern is indicating that November may be very unsettled indeed with little prospect of anything that could be deemed as settled weather save for a few days beneath transient ridges of high pressure. Often wet and cool it'll be a typical autumn month but the hint that there'll be little outbreaks of really cold air just yet that could be reserved for December? December looks as if it'll bring a good taste of early winter weather and the chance of some rather cold weather at times, unsettled through the early and middle period with a 'settled sandwich', the run up to Christmas always proves to be a headache but on balance looks to be cold with wintry showers. If the 'big day' is to be another white one, we'll have to update later, but there's a reasonable chance. Less cold to end the year with the cold block being swept away by Atlantic systems, but I hesitate to say it'll be mild. *November* The new month looks as if it'll begin with a complex area of low pressure in control, so all areas are likely to be rather unsettled with showers or longer spells of rain and with high pressure well off to the east acting as a block, there little change indicated in the pattern well into the second week. There is little in the pattern to suggest any settled weather through the middle of November either, the signs are that it'll remain very unsettled across all areas with some quite disturbed conditions at times, low pressure strung out across much of the North Atlantic basin, therefore it'll be feeling cool generally everywhere. Well into the third and fourth week of November there is nothing to suggest anything more than a few days of consecutive drier conditions beneath transient ridges of high pressure between quite active low pressure systems, only at the very close of the month is there an indication that pressure will build across southern Britain. Some prospect therefore that a quieter and drier end to what is likely to be a very unsettled month may develop. *December* With high pressure straddled across the southern portion of the country and then transferring eastward, there's the prospect of a few days of settled weather for many areas, however conditions will soon be on the change. Low pressure looks as if it'll approach from the south or southwest coming up against a rather persistent high to the east. A strengthening and colder easterly flow looks set to develop and the threat increase of perhaps some wintry showers for southern Britain mixed in with outbreaks of rain. High pressure looks set to remain in control to the east through to the middle of the month acting as a block to Atlantic systems, the flow easterly to south-easterly weakening to bring the threat of rather chilly but quieter conditions for a time before the easterly to south-easterly regime strengthens once more, wintry showers again effecting southern areas. High pressure rebuilds across the UK during mid-month and settles the weather into quite and rather cold conditions, the high drifting west into mid-Atlantic as we approach the Christmas period. Developments to the north or northeast in the generally northerly to north-easterly drift could increase the chance of another 'white one' over the holiday period although as ever timing will be everything with less cold conditions moving through 2011.
