Llanelli's town centre does little to attract visitors, according to a council committee

THE rundown look of Llanelli's town centre does little to encourage visitors to the area, according to a council committee.

The latest report published by Carmarthenshire Council's environment scrutiny committee reveals the group was disappointed by the lack of action taken to improve the appearance of town centre businesses.

The committee, along with councillors Ken Rees and Winston Lemon, undertook a site tour of four key town centres on April 11 as a continuation of their forward work programme, and noted the same problems were raised during last year's visit to Llanelli.

"Members were greatly concerned with regards to the noticeable high numbers of rundown exteriors of shops within the area," the report states.

"This issue had been highlighted on a previous visit and again they shared fears that the public would interpret this as the authority not listening to the concerns of shop tenants.

"They felt that the rundown appearance of some shops did little to encourage the public to visit the town centre."

Although the group was impressed that the metallic benches in the town centre were in excellent condition, they were concerned about the litter scattered around seating areas and felt the rubbish bins and canopies were in need of cleaning.

As they walked around the centre, the committee commented on litter and graffiti on the walls of the lane leading from Market Street to the bus station, rubbish stacked on double yellow lines behind the Iceland store in Park Street, and the state of the derelict land between Park Street and Parc Eynon.

The committee continued its visit through the indoor market, which was deemed to be very clean and welcoming.

"There appeared to be no litter around the entrance and throughout the market itself," the report reads.

"Members inspected the lift facility to the parking area at the rear of the market and whilst they found it to be clean, the emergency written instructions and the floor selection buttons were incorrect."

The committee concluded that of the four towns visited — which included Pembrey and Burry Port — Llanelli and also Kidwelly (see page 50) were the only two to cause concern. The report is due to be discussed at their meeting tomorrow.

"Members expressed great disappointment to find that many of the issues identified in these two towns during their previous visit in 2010 continued to be a problem," they said."These issues were particularly associated with the cleanliness and the condition of the towns and the committee felt there was still room for improvement."
