Festival founder opens tourism centre in his favourite resort

Glastonbury Festival founder Michael Eavis was back in his favourite seaside town yesterday celebrating the rescue of its tourist information centre by a band of volunteers.

Sedgemoor District Council announced in 2009 it could no longer afford to run the facility, but locals were determined the service should stay open.

In a 'Big Society' move they formed Burnham Information Rescue & Support, which aims to make the centre profitable again.

Mr Eavis, who makes fortnightly visits to the resort, led the opening celebrations yesterday on the Esplanade as Sedgemoor formally handed over the centre.

He was joined by dignitaries including the town's mayor and mayoress, plus Sedgemoor chairman Jane Moreton.

He said: "I fell in love with a girl here when I was 12.

"It's my favourite seaside town.

"My wife and I drive over every two weeks without fail.

"We have tea in the little caf on the sea front and walk out to the lighthouse.

"The nature reserve is nearby, it is all so unspoiled."

Burnham hovercraft rescue charity BARB and The Coastguard Association will both be providing volunteers to hand out sea safety information and sell charity merchandise at the centre.

It will sell merchandise from a range of Somerset producers, including drinks from Rich's Cider Farm, fudge from Burnham fudge maker Jonathan Walter and artwork from Burnham artist Judith Champion.

It will also promote all of the town and surrounding area's numerous popular tourist attractions.

The centre will be operated by almost 30 volunteers, but it still needs more people to join its ranks.
