AAA Columbus Clippers
Clippers 6, Tides 5 Cord Phelps’ RBI single in the top of the 10th inning gave the Clippers an International League win in Norfolk, Va. Phelps was 3-for-6 with a double, triple and three RBI. Luis Valbuena singled twice, scored two runs and set up Phelps’ game-winner with a sacrifice bunt. Clippers starter David Huff gave up five runs on 10 hits in four innings, but relievers Carlton Smith and Zach Putnam followed with two scoreless innings each, before Joe Martinez (4-1, 4.74) pitched a scoreless ninth for the win and Josh Judy earned his seventh save with a scoreless 10th.
Notes: Cord Phelps has hit in 12 straight games, going 20-for-55 (.364) with five doubles, one triple, two home runs and 16 RBI. Overall, he’s batting .316 with 13 doubles, two triples, seven homers and 38 RBI in 177 at bats....Zach Putnam (3-1, six saves, 2.76) has pitched four straight scoreless outings of two innings each. In the eight innings, he's given up five hits, fanned six and walked one.
AA Akron Aeros
Aeros 2, Flying Squirrels 1 Chun-Hsiu Chen’s single with two outs in the bottom of the ninth inning drove in Donnie Webb to give the Aeros the Eastern League win over Richmond (Va.) at Canal Park. Matt McBride’s run-scoring single in the eighth inning produced the first Akron run. Aeros starter Joe Gardner got a no-decision despite allowing just one run on six hits in eight innings, with six strikeouts and one walk. Reliever Adam Miller, the former first-round Indians’ draft pick who is attempting a comeback after career-threatening finger injuries, pitched a perfect ninth inning to get the win in his Akron debut after several impressive outings at Kinston.
Notes: Tim Fedroff went 3-for-4 for the Aeros after having his 20-game hitting streak snapped on Saturday night. Fedroff is leading the Eastern League with a .376 batting average. During the 20-game hitting streak, Fedroff hit .467 (36-for-77) with 18 RBI and 16 runs....Matt McBride has not struck out in his last 14 games, spanning 48 at bats. In McBride's last 25 games, he's hitting .330 (30-for-91) with six doubles, one triple, seven home runs, 23 RBI and 17 runs.
Advanced A Kinston Indians
The Indians were idle on Sunday.
Notes: Left-hander Drew Pomeranz, the Indians’ first-round pick and the fifth overall pick in the 2010 draft, will pitch for Kinston at home against the Wilmington Blue Rocks on Monday. Pomeranz is 1-1 with a 2.09 ERA in eight starts. He has struck out 54, walked 15 and held opponents to a .193 batting average and one home run in 38 2/3 innings....Adam Abraham (.232) has four doubles and three home runs in his last 10 games, batting .265 (9-for-34) with 10 RBI, seven runs and six walks.
A Lake County Captains
Captains 3, Whitecaps 1 Starter Kyle Blair (3-3, 5.67) blanked West Michigan on five hits and two walks in six innings, with nine strikeouts, to get the Midwest League win for the Captains at their Classic Park home in Eastlake. Alex Monsalve’s single and Anthony Gallas’ double drove in first-inning runs for the Captains, and Monsalve got another RBI with an eighth-inning groundout.
Notes: Gallas is leading the Midwest League in batting average (.354) and doubles (21). The league’s second-leading hitter is his former Kent State teammate, Greg Rohan, who is hitting .351 for the Peoria Chiefs....Reliever Dale Dickerson pitched scoreless seventh and eighth innings, lowering his ERA to 1.33 in 20 1/3 innings....Clayton Ehlert (2.66) pitched the ninth inning for his ninth save, although he yielded a solo home run.
Independent Lake Erie Crushers
Slammers 5, Crushers 4 Lake Erie tied the game, 4-4, with four runs in the bottom of the eighth inning in Avon, but lost the Frontier League game when Joliet scored in the top of the ninth. Kyle Shaffer’s two-run home run keyed the Crushers’ eighth-inning rally.
Notes: Nick Mahin went 0-for-4, but is still batting a team-leading .355 (11-for-31)....The Crushers' second- and third-leading hitters are Patrick Norris at .314 (11-for-35) and Andrew Davis at .310 (9-for-29).
