Israelis boycott costly cottage cheese

A group of Israelis have launched an online protest over the soaring price of cheese.

More than 75,000 people have joined a Facebook group called "Eight shekels for such a basic product? Don't buy cottage cheese for a month".

The price of cottage cheese has skyrocketed in the last few years and a 250g container is now sold in many supermarkets at 1.40.

At the beginning of June, dairy companies Tara, Tnuva and Strauss raised the price of a wide range of their products. This came just before the festival of Shavuot, which is traditionally celebrated with dairy meals.

The price increase angered Israelis, with Kadima MK Ronit Tirosh presenting Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu with a gift of cottage cheese, claiming it had become a "luxury item".

The Israeli press have dubbed the product as valuable as "white gold."

As more and more people joined the boycott, one shopkeeper promised to slash the price of a 250g pot by nearly half ? but only until Saturday.
