Early runs pay off as Columbus tops Toledo: Minor-league report

Mahoning Valley falls in slugfest, Crushers nip Windy City.

AAA Columbus Clippers

Clippers 3, Mud Hens 1: Columbus scored single runs in the first, second and third, and defeated Toledo in an International League game at Columbus. The runs scored on singles by Nick Johnson, Jerad Head and Shelley Duncan. Scott Barnes (6-1) went seven innings and picked up the win.

A Mahoning Valley Scrappers

Muckdogs 10, Scrappers 7: Mahoning Valley outhit Batavia, N.Y., 13-11, in a New York-Penn League game in Niles, but still lost the game. Scrappers starter Robert Nixon (0-1) was raked for six runs -- five earned -- and six hits in 3 innings.

Independent Lake Erie Crushers

Crushers 5, Thunderbolts 4: Lake Erie scored four runs in the second inning and beat Windy City in a Frontier League game in Avon. They got six hits in the inning, including five in a row.

AA Akron Aeros

Aeros were idle on Monday.

Advanced A Kinston Indians

Indians were idle on Monday.

Notes: Left-hander Drew Pomeranz (2-2), the Indians' first pick (fifth overall) in the 2010 draft, leads the Carolina League with a 1.93 ERA. Pomeranz has struck out 77 and walked 23 in 60 innings, allowing just one home run and a .201 batting average.

Captains were idle on Monday.
