Not big, clever or funny

The whole of Israel now knows exactly where Foreign Minister Avigdor Lieberman was when he was speaking on the radio yesterday. That's right, Mr Exquisite Manners was using the facilities in his bathroom. We know this because immediately after he finished speaking, a lavatory flush was heard.

My first thought was, oh, please, too much information. Then I remembered where I had been witness to a very similar display of repellent behaviour. Robert Maxwell, in his pomp as chairman of the Mirror group of papers, gave me an interview for the JC, which took place in the publisher's penthouse suite.

Maxwell had an en-suite bathroom off the main office area. Just as the photographer and I arrived in the penthouse, a lavatory flushed and Maxwell strode out, re-buttoning. It was quite obviously a power play, an all-too graphic illustration of not giving a s**t.

Lieberman, coarse as they come, is said to be facing corruption charges. He may have been making a similar point to Maxwell. Just remember, Yvet: Maxwell didn't end well.
