Barnes, Smith twirl four-hitter as Clippers blank Gwinnett: Minor-league report

Lake County holds on to top Fort Wayne, Kinston splits twinbill, Akron rained out.

AAA Columbus Clippers

Clippers 4, Braves 0: LH Scott Barnes and RH Carlton Smith combined on a four-hitter for Columbus against Gwinnett in Lawrenceville, Ga. Barnes (1-1, 2.31 ERA) allowed two hits and five walks in 6 innings. He struck out seven. Smith (0.00) earned his first save after giving up two hits and one walk in 21/3 innings. He struck out four.

Clippers 1B Travis Buck (.412) tripled, walked and drove in two runs. Columbus 2B Cord Phelps (.343) had two hits, one walk and one RBI.

AA Akron Aeros

Aeros vs. Baysox, ppd.: Akron's game against visiting Bowie (Md.) was postponed and will be made up Thursday as part of a doubleheader beginning at 4:05 p.m.

Notes: Fans holding a ticket for Wednesday's game may exchange them for the makeup game or any remaining home game this season. Fans must redeem their tickets in person at the Canal Park box office. Tickets are subject to availability. ... Aeros LH T.J. McFarland (0-0, 6.23 ERA) will pitch Game 1 against Baysox LH Rick Zagone (1-0, 6.43). Akron LH Matt Packer (0-2, 5.27) will start Game 2. RH Steve Johnson is expected to be added to the Bowie roster and make the start in the second game.

Advanced A Kinston Indians

Red Sox 16-0, Indians 6-6: LH Giovanni Soto (1-3, 3.05) hurled six scoreless innings as host Kinston earned a split of a doubleheader against Salem (Va.). Soto allowed three hits and one walk. He struck out six. K-Tribe LF Bo Greenwell (.304) doubled, walked and drove in two runs.

In the opener, Kinston RH Clayton Cook (1-2, 6.88) allowed nine runs in one-plus innings of work. Salem scored two in the first and 10 in the second. LH Chris Jones (9.90) gave up five runs -- four earned -- in two innings, and RH Marty Popham (3.86) allowed two runs in four innings for Kinston. LF Shannon Wilkerson (twice), RF Jeremy Hazelbaker and DH Reynaldo Rodriguez homered for Salem. SS Casey Frawley (.231) homered for the K-Tribe.

A Lake County Captains

Captains 10, TinCaps 9: Lake County jumped out to a 10-run lead in the fourth inning before hanging on for the victory in Fort Wayne, Ind. CF Carlos Moncrief (.239), C Alex Monsalve (.324), RF Anthony Gallas (.317) and SS Nick Bartolone (.185) each had two RBI for the Captains. Monsalve also had three hits.
