Carmarthenshire council plan a rise in Welsh speakers

THE number of Carmarthenshire Council staff who speak Welsh will be increased under a new plan from the authority.

Half of the county's population speak Welsh and with its fourth scheme for the language the council has identified how it will help the language develop further.

Councillor Clive Scourfield, executive board member with responsibility for the Welsh language, said: "The scheme describes how the council will treat the Welsh and English languages equally in providing services and communicating with the public. This scheme sets a new challenge for the authority in ensuring that it provides high-standard services in Welsh."

As well as increasing the number of staff who work bilingually through various projects, the plan commits the council to establishing a network of language ambassadors and extending the number of mentors for Welsh learners.

It emphasises the need for the Welsh language to be considered when the council develops new policies or reviews existing ones.
