Jerad Head, Jason Kipnis and Cord Phelps leading Clippers' hitting surge: Minor-league report

Outfielder Head second in league in batting, while infielders Phelps and Kipnis are moving up.

AAA Columbus Clippers

IornPigs 4-6, Clippers 1-12: SS Cord Phelps (.313) drove in three runs with a home run and double and 1B Wes Hodges (.208) singled three times for four RBI as the host Clippers (23-7) totaled 14 hits to win the nightcap of the International League doubleheader.

LF Jerad Head (.385) and C Luke Carlin (.345) both slugged solo home runs for the Clippers and 2B Jason Kipnis (.283) was 3-for-4. Columbus managed just five singles in the first game, with LH starter David Huff (3-1, 3.65) yielding four runs on 11 hits to take the loss. Both games went seven innings.

Notes: LH starter Scott Barnes (2-1, 6.23) got the win for the Clippers in the nightcap, despite giving up five runs on seven hits and two walks, with six strikeouts, in five innings....Head is second in the International League with his .385 batting average. In his last six games, Head is 13-for-27 (.481) with two doubles, one homer, five RBI and seven runs....Head’s homer on Sunday was his fourth of the season, and Carlin’s was his third....CF Ezequiel Carrera (.311) stole two bases in the second game, giving him the IL lead with 14 (in 15 attempts)....Phelps is 6-for-10 with three doubles, a homer and five RBI in his last three games....Kipnis is 12-for-33 (.364) in his last eight games, with three doubles, one triple, one homer, 11 runs and 10 RBI....The Clippers, who have won 15 of their last 17 games, lead the IL in batting average (.298) and runs (192)....RH starter Zach McAllister is 5-0 with a 3.09 ERA in five starts, striking out 21, walking five and allowing just one homer....RH reliever Carlton Smith is 1-0 in 11 games, pitching 14 2/3 scoreless innings. He’s struck out 17, walked four and allowed 10 hits.

AA Akron Aeros

Aeros 5, Thunder 4: RH starter Austin Adams (3-2, 2.76) gave up three runs (one earned) in six innings to get the Eastern League win for the Aeros over Trenton (N.J.) at Canal Park. Catcher Chun Chen (.274) keyed Akron’s three-run first inning with an RBI double, and the Aeros took a 5-0 lead in the second inning on an RBI triple by CF Jordan Henry (.299) and a run-scoring single by LF Tim Fedroff (.337), who was 3-for-4.

RH Chen Lee pitched two perfect innings, with three strikeouts, in relief of Adams, and RH Cory Burns earned his ninth save despite yielding a ninth-inning run.

Notes: Fedroff is 11-for-21 (.524) in his last five games, with two doubles and six RBI....Chun Chen is 12-for-37 (.324) with four homers, four doubles, 11 RBI and eight runs in his last 10 games....Adams allowed six hits, struck out three and walked two....1B Matt McBride (.248) was 0-for-3 with an RBI. McBride was 2-for-4 in each of his previous four games, with a homer in each of the first three of those games....Henry has stolen 11 bases in 11 attempts....Chen Lee (1-1, 2.84) has struck out 27, walked five and given up 13 hits in 19 innings....LH starter Kelvin De La Cruz (1-3, 2.77) has struck out 35 and allowed just 16 hits (no homers) in 26 innings, but has walked 19.

Advanced A Kinston Indians

Nationals 2, Indians 1 Potomac (Va.) scored an unearned run in the top of the 11th inning to win the Carolina League game and end Kinston’s four-game winning streak. Indians’ LH starter Giovanni Soto gave up one run on four hits and a walk in six innings, with five strikeouts. RF Jason Smit singled home Kinston’s lone run, and CF Tyler Holt (.289) was 3-for-3 with a run and two walks.

RH reliever Adam Miller, a Cleveland first-round pick in the 2003 draft who, until last week, had not pitched in an official game since 2008 because of finger ailments, pitched a scoreless inning with a strikeout and a walk.

Notes: Soto, who will turn 20 on May 18, is 1-3 with a 2.67 ERA in six starts. In 27 innings, he’s fanned 26, walked nine and held opponents to a .202 batting average....Indians’ relief pitchers have not allowed an earned run in their last 38 2/3 innings. They have given up three unearned runs during the span and allowed one inherited base-runner to score....RH reliever Tyler Sturdevant pitched two scoreless innings. In nine games, Surdevant is 2-1 with a 1.00 ERA, fanning 16, walking five and allowing 14 hits in 18 innings....Miller, considered one of baseball’s premier pitching prospects before his finger injuries, allowed four runs (three earned) in his first outing on April 30. Since then, he has had two scoreless, one-inning outings, fanning two while giving up one hit and two walks....LH Drew Pomeranz (1-0), the Indians’ first-round draft pick last season, leads the Carolina League with 42 strikeouts and is third with a 1.27 ERA. He has allowed just 16 hits (one homer) in 28 1/3 innings, with 10 walks. Opponents are hitting .162 against him....RH Brett Brach has a 1.25 ERA, but his 21 1/3 innings aren’t enough to qualify among the league leaders. Brach has made starts in his last three outings, after beginning the season with a start at AA Akron and two relief outings with Kinston. Including his six scoreless, two-hit innings for a win for Akron, Brach is 4-1 with an 0.98 ERA. He has struck out 20, walked 10, allowed no homers and held opponents to a .187 batting average in 27 2/3 innings....Smit, a 21-year-old from Australia, is 2-for-8 since being promoted from Class A Lake County, where he hit .344 (31-for-90) with five doubles, one triple, two homers and 15 walks.

A Lake County Captains

Lugnuts 9, Captains 6: Lansing (Mich.) scored seven runs (four earned) on four hits and three Captains’ errors in the bottom of the second inning of the Midwest League game. Captains’ RH starter Michael Goodnight (2-3, 3.24) lasted 1 2/3 innings and took the loss.

Lake County LF Anthony Gallas (.343) and RF Carlos Moncrief (.263) both doubled, singled and had two RBI, and DH Alex Monsalve (.293) had a double, single and RBI. Captains’ RH relievers Jordan Cooper and Nickolas Sarianides pitched 3 1/3 and two scoreless innings, respectively, each allowing one hit.

Notes: Gallas leads the Midwest League with 14 doubles. A 2006 Strongsville High School graduate, Gallas slugged 49 home runs in four seasons at Kent State before signing with the Indians as an undrafted free agent last year. He is 35-for-102 with three homers....LH Mike Rayl is 3-0 with a 2.08 ERA in six starts. In 30 1/3 innings, he’s struck out 31, walked nine and held opponents to a .160 batting average....Before Sunday’s game, Goodnight was 2-2 with a 2.27 ERA. He had pitched 31 2/3 innings in six starts, striking out 29, walking nine and holding opponents to a .150 batting average.
