Curse strikes again as Lewis toppled for 99

DON'T tell young Neath batsman Lloyd Lewis that lightning doesn't strike twice after he was dismissed for 99 for the second week running.

Having been bowled one short of his ton last week in the W Walters Engineers Ltd South Wales Junior Cricket League under-16 match at Skewen, Lewis was set to put matters right in the home clash with Ystradgynlais.

But with the scoreboard again indicating another run needed to register three figures, Lewis suffered the agony again of his stumps being disturbed.

Neath coach Adrian Shaw stood incredulous at the wicket, umpiring on both occasions.

"I've never seen or heard anything like it in my cricket career," said Shaw. "It was unbelievable, but to score 99 in two successive innings is still a great achievement in itself."

At least Lewis had the satisfaction of leading his side to another win after they posted a formidable 196-2, with Matthew Pearce unbeaten on 55.

In reply, Ystradgynlais were dismissed for 65 with Rhys Mowberry taking 3-3.

Port Talbot had two batsmen reaching centuries as they hit a mammoth 233-0 at Briton Ferry Steel, just seven short of the league record for the first wicket.

Sean Griffiths smashed a brilliant undefeated 122 and Lewis Jones was 104 not out. Steel were then routed for 27 in only 10 overs with Sam Tobin achieving 4-2 and Jack Underwood 3-2.

Ynysygerwn made it two wins from two as they easily accounted for Aberdare by 91 runs.

Steffan Jones hit an unbeaten 65 as Bronwydd triumphed by 10 wickets against Pontarddulais who could only total 87-9 and Chris Foreshaw's 47 led Morriston to a four-wicket success against Gowerton Reds.

Joe Farthing carried his bat for an unbeaten 40 for Clydach who beat Ynystawe by eight wickets, while Dyffryn defeated Skewen by 78 runs at Memorial Park.

Adam Robins (54) and Lewis Day (49) led the run charge which ended on 143-5 before off-spinner Joe Evans weaved his magic taking 5-16 to leave Skewen on 65-8 at the close.

Jamie Evans stroked 44 not out then took 3-20 as Ammanford beat Drefach by 38 runs and Dan Jones (26) steadied Carmarthen Wanderers to a six-wicket win against Llanelli for whom Sam Weeds hit 33 out of their 113-5.

Gowerton Reds were too strong for Swansea Civil Service, winning by 54 runs with Will Gambold (42no), Ross Young (35) and John Jones (4-1) their stars. Sam Hawkes (32) saved Civil Service from a heavier defeat.

Tondu's introduction to the league was a successful one as Ross Nicholson (73) and Ellis James (3-11) gave them a 63-run victory over Briton Ferry Steel.

In the under-14 league Pontarddulais trounced Dafen B by 137 runs after the visitors were reduced to 29-9 in pursuit of Bont's 166-2. Matthew Aubrey top scored with 52 not out.

Dafen beat Gowerton Blues by two wickets thanks to Jordan Evans (25) and Ben Davies (3-0), while Tom Ham (28) and Eion McDonald (3-4) caught the eye for the visitors.

Highlights of the under-12 pairs league, which was severely affected by the weather, were knocks of 17 by Ellis Richards and Ben Gimblett which led Llanelli to a 77-run win over Dafen.
