Neath couple admit staging fake car-jacking

A HUSBAND and wife from Neath have pleaded guilty to staging a fake car- jacking.

Simon and Amy Ball have now been warned it is "overwhelmingly likely" they will be sent to prison for the crime.

The couple, of Bay View Gardens, Skewen, were charged after police dismissed a claim that a car-jacking took place last month between Llandarcy and Jersey Marine.

Simon Ball, aged 29, and Amy Claire Ball, aged 26, faced a two-count indictment when they appeared yesterday at Swansea Crown Court.

Both admitted unlawfully taking a BMW car without the owner's consent on April 3.

False

They also pleaded guilty to perverting the course of justice between April 2 and 12 by making false statements and allegations to the police.

Last month, South Wales Police appealed for information about an incident in which a woman taking a BMW for a test drive was said to have had the vehicle stolen from her by two men. But a week later a senior officer said it had "turned out to be a false allegation"

Prosecutor Nicola Powell yesterday described the defendants' conduct as a "deliberate course of action".

Proceedings were adjourned for background reports after defence barristers Owen Williams and Robin Rouch emphasised their clients were "both of hitherto clean character".

Judge Paul Thomas QC said he was prepared to allow the defendants to remain on bail over the next few weeks but this was not to be taken as any indication of a non-custodial sentence.

The judge told the couple: "You have pleaded guilty to a very serious matter and in my view a custodial sentence is the overwhelmingly likely disposal here."
