Correspondence included a letter from Trish thanking members for cards, letters and flowers sent during Chris's ongoing illness.
The toddlers and mothers group thanked us for organising the pancake-tossing competition. Angela thanked Diane Mitchell for representing us on the village hall committee.
At the skittles cup round against North Petherton, we were euphoric, having won by 49 pins, but we were brought down to Earth with a bump when we played our first league match under Gill's captaincy against Ashcott, at the Street Inn. There we were shown how to play skittles and lost by 21 pins.
Interest was expressed in the golf croquet advertised in County News and the county quiz. Ladies Who Lunch met at the Ring O' Bells, Ashcott.
Wednesday, May 18, is the bi-monthly village lunch and it is suggested that we go to this, as a show of support.
On Friday, May 20, is a guided tour of Hestercombe gardens and lunch, in our own transport. On Wednesday, June 8, it is the annual meeting in Liverpool.
Angela reported on the group meeting at which Michael Eavis had agreed to give us a guided tour of the Glastonbury Festival site on Friday, June 17.
Our speaker, Malcolm Welshman, started life as a veterinary surgeon, moving on to writing books and becoming a speaker on cruise ships and ashore.
His childhood was spent in Africa where, on one occasion, he was almost eaten alive by soldier ants. The household included a black cat, an African parrot and a bush dog. These animals returned to England with the family and Malcolm had just qualified when the parrot was taken seriously ill with a tumour and was on the point of death. Malcolm operated and saved its life.
His first job was at London Zoo where he met the Houdini of woolly monkeys who had an appetite for steel bolts. Malcolm concluded his talk with humorous anecdotes from his book and combined these with magic tricks. Angela thanked this man of may talents for a very entertaining evening.
The competition for an animal in any medium was won by Diane, with Wendy and Mary runners-up. Pat had the flower of the month - an exceptional two-toned tulip.
